Which Gigaton songs will be popular at shows in the long term?

JojoRiceJojoRice Posts: 4,207
Songs such as Corduroy, Elderly Woman, DTE, Porch, Alive, Betterman, and Evenflow are all usually found on the setlist any given night or at least 75% of the time.  Think any Gigaton songs get this treatment long term?  Or will Gigaton get a similar treatment as Riot Act for example and be very sparse in the years ahead?

Dance of the Clairvoyant has some staying power I think.  It is different than the norm.  They probably have fun playing it.  Quick Escape would be the other.

Eager to hear these songs in the fall after the band has had time to work on them in California and Europe.

None if the recent tour's treatment of Binaural, Riot Act, Self-Titled, Backspacer, and Lightning Bolt songs are any indication. They've definitely had fun playing quick escape this tour but I think that one might be challenging on Ed's voice if played every night. There's a reason they haven't been playing animal, dissident, go, blood, etc... and songs of that ilk very often in recent years...

If I was handicapping I'd say in the order of most likely:

    1) Quick Escape
    2) Superblood Wolfmoon
    3) Seven O'clock (but I doubt it...)

Usually 1 rocker and 1 slow song show up on future tours. Hard to guess at this point. I feel like Superblood Wolfmoon or DoTC have the best chance of sticking around. My personal bias would love to see Alright have some staying power a la Of the Girl and be that rare gem.

Well… the thread said long term.  I like about 4-5 of the Gigaton songs.  This is my least favorite album.  But I answered the question based on the likely fact that in the future most people would want to hear the popular hits and some rare gems.  Just don’t see many of these songs matching that.  Just my opinion, but please insult us some more.  Have a great day!!!

    Thoughts:
    - Superblood Wolfmoon will be the new Mind Your Manners in the setlist rotation
    - Quick Escape is phenomenal live but if EV's conserving his voice it won't be played as often
    - DotC and Who Ever Said seems like an easy song to mix in future sets
    - Retrograde is also great, but probably will get shelved unless a show gets a mellow setlist including Indifference, Release, etc.
    - River Cross likely shuffles into EV solo shows

Who Ever Said is awesome, but I feel it's doomed to the same fate as No Way and will rarely be played even though it sounds great. With Josh on this tour they should be playing the hell out of these songs to get those added sounds in like on the album.

i don’t think this one will make the cut but my personal favorite so far to see live from Gigaton is Take the Long Way. great song by Matt, it's quick and fun so I wouldn't mind it years from now.

From what I gathered from the Festival 2021 run and these first few shows, if anything DotC seems to be the one they like playing live the most. Jeff and Stone get to switch instruments, it sounds pretty great, and Ed seems to have fun with it. Originally, Never Destination seemed to have the "meant to be played live" feel but it wasn't super tight in the shows I saw them play it. Maybe SBWM too.

The thread didn't ask if there were any songs on the record people liked. The post asked which would stay in the set longterm. I don't think any will. It's also completely okay to love a band and not really like a record or, god forbid, more than one record that band has released. Some Neil Young records are pretty much unlistenable front-to-back. I'm not reaching for my copy of Dylan's Saved any time soon, etc.

"Who Ever Said" hasn't even been played regularly now. Why would it end up becoming a regular part of the set in the future?  Don't get me wrong-- it's a great song.

I think one of the things working against that song, "Superblood Wolfmoon" and "Seven O'Clock" in terms of being integrated into the set long-term is that they are so lyrics-heavy.  Eddie needs help remembering the words to those songs now and they were written somewhat recently.  In a few years, there's no chance he's delivering "Who Ever Said" without a full-on TelePrompTer.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

I thought who ever said sounded great last year.  I think retrograde should be an opener, gigaton blows lightning bolt and Backspacer out of the water IMO. I hope they can give one great performance of Superblood

I think if the band had been able to tour straight after the album release we would’ve had at least 5-6 Gigaton per night, some more, some less depending on the night / city etc…but the albums two years old now. Obviously Matt’s illness has meant less songs at Oakland. I can still see 3-5 songs per night from here in in including Europe and the fall US shows.
