Revisiting the 2016 Tour

It’s been six years since they were out touring arenas in North America, and when the San Diego show happens, it’ll be almost the full six years to the date that they played their last one in Toronto. Figured for anyone nostalgic for two tours ago (yeah, too weird to say that) I’d post some of the reviews that were written for the Pearl Jam Concertpedia for you guys to relive. Feel free to share some memories, I’ll do my best to update this on each anniversary date

2016 tour was amazing! I'm a little early for the Jacksonville date anniversary, but man what a show! I was GA, 3 people off the rail, in front of Ed.  Killer show, loved the Elderly Woman opener with the lights on. Heard Rival, first time since 2000 for me, love that song! Got Of the Earth my first time, loved it! DTE into Betterman that night was particularly great. Just had a lot of fun at that show. Listen to the boot a lot.

Felt like anything was up for grabs this tour with no record to tour. I only hit two other shows this tour (Greenville and Wrigley N1), but it was great following the set lists each night!

I was at the Fort Lauderdale (really Sunrise) and Miami shows, among others.  Both those Florida shows were good, but in the words of a guy from LV that I was sitting near at the Miami show, that show kicked Fort Lauderdale’s ass! I remember the lights going off, Ed asking if everyone was in, and then straight into Corduroy with no let up for quite a while! It was great.

Interesting. I was at Sunrise and Miami as well, and honestly thought that the first show was better. I think I was annoyed because there were so many more celebs in Miami on a Sat night, which I think caused it to start later than expected and pushed my seats back a little further. I also recall the seats were tightly packed - reminded me of Wells Fargo center in Philly.  I remember SOLAT into RVM was outstanding in Miami, we were sitting next to a fellow 10clubber who we met in 2008 in Camden, and have seen at multiple shows over the years. Made it to 9 shows that year, it was a great tour.

Still can’t decide if Quebec City or Fenway 2 was better that year. Had rail for QC and was a mile away for Fenway so definitely different experiences.

I did Columbia, Lexington and Fenway 2 (10C suite) and Lex and Fenway are both in my top 5. Just sad I missed Strangest Tribe by 1 show.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.

I happen to really enjoy this one. Lots of dogs, great dedication before HTI, the Tesla coil thing during LBolt is cool, full Little Wing. I know I’ve heard complaints about the crowd at the show not holding up their end of the bargain, which is a shame because I think if this set was played in a big city, many of us would be looking at it as an all-timer

I loved MSG 1 & 2 from 2016 and was left of stage for N1 and right of stage N2 and it kind of blended into one awesome concert experience - not so much like 2 separate shows but a blended, fantastic PJ experience.

I was in the far endzone in the 300s with an empty seat next to me and a dunk idiot behind me. Still an amazing show. My partner's first-ever PJ show; she was hooked from the first song.

Interesting note, this starts a trend of Eddie getting Boston sports trivia wrong (when he lists off the NHL teams, he mentions the Celtics) that he would continue later in the year at Fenway (mis-remembering former Red Sox players names).

Loved that tour. I was lucky enough to attend the Tampa and NYC shows before hitting up Wrigley and Fenway. All around my favorite tour and bootlegs.

I think it all gelled together on that cycle. Great humor from the stage, great setlists and acknowledgement of their entire catalog. I didn't see any shows, but it shines through in the recordings.

Ed looked exhausted when talking before Release. I admit, I was shedding tears.

It was my husband's and my wedding anniversary. We had GA, but did not queue, just hung out at the back of the pit with a friend. It was truly a magical night - our daughter was there with us as well. It was her 2nd PJ show - her first was the night before. It took us about 27 shows to finally get Oceans in Brooklyn, she got it two nights in a row in Philly.

A very special evening for us when they raised the banner - we attended all 10 of those Philly shows.

I thought Ed was going to cry as he talked before Release.  The arena was really quiet as Ed talked before Release. Incredible moment.  really enjoy listening to the boot for the talk before and after Release.   An incredible night all over.  Even after Ten the set list rocked.  Best show i've seen out of my 29.   And I was fortunate to also be at Greenville for VS.  12 days before which was amazing as well.

I love the '16 Tour.  I saw both Wrigley's and the Pemberton Show.   I still feel like the Pemberton show flew under the radar because it was a festival show, but I find myself revisiting that bootleg a lot.  It was so gooooooood.   I feel like those not able to make the drive from Vancouver, Seattle, or anywhere in between missed out :)

  • I remember this year so fondly. My first hometown show (Jacksonville) and they fucking brought it! Eddie made good on his promise to “report back to the guys” about Jacksonville being a good city to play after he played there solo a couple of years prior. That night completed the Avocado record for me live when they played “Army Reserve”. We got “Rival” and “Of the Earth” (both firsts for me…). They scratched “Love, Reign O’er Me” to play the Riot Act deep cut “Ghost” for The Greek (anyone who’s been here a while knows who that is). I’d also be remiss not to mention an absolute scorcher of a version of “Smile” to the back of the stage.
I saw the whole FL run with my lovely and amazing girlfriend (now my lovely and amazing wife!). Got some deep cuts early and often on this run of shows.
Also saw them in Colombia on the day that Prince was announced as being found dead. The band teased “Purple Rain” > “Chloe Dancer / Crown of Thorns”. Pure magic. Was lucky enough from there to be able to attend both Wrigley shows (Let’s Play Two!!!!) and finally cap the year with a Temple of The Dog show at the LA Forum. I don’t imagine I’ll ever be able to top this year of live PJ. It seems like an eternity has passed since. Cheers to all who were there, or are here!

I was at both MSG shows and Fenway 2. All were great shows with great energy from both the band and crowd, but Fenway 2 stood out to me as one of my all-time favorites I’ve been to. Great setlist- opening up with off he goes and NAIS, in hiding, not for you-immortality-deep back to back to back, angel, footsteps, love reign over me and breath in the second encore- just an all-around amazing show!

They knocked the Pemberton show out of the park in my opinion. I remember the show being fantastic and it translates very well on the bootleg as well. Many fan favorites and deep cuts, not a typical festival set if you ask me.

Talked about this earlier in the thread and got excited about it and popped in the bootleg during a road trip. I had forgotten about Ghost! That was amazing, especially with the dancing ghost going crazy on the floor behind me. A lot of fun!

Don’t really need to explain in further details here. Everyone knows what happened! I think Indifference might’ve been my favorite performance of the 12, mainly because we never get to see it in this setting. It was like 94 versions where it was pitch black instead of singing with the house lights on. Perfect end to all of that. I go back n forth between what I like more from this or Philly and I actually this one wins out. Nothing will beat Moline, but this is a good number 2
