Between this and the Ukraine situation I can’t help but to ask myself what year are we in? Seems like the world is devolving.
Well said, Nick. It really feels like things are becoming unhinged. I can never fully accept the cynical and pessimistic view that says we will never evolve away from hate and war to become a better creature, but I can also never fully dismiss it. I am recently having a hard time feeling hopeful for humanity. And I don't like feeling that way.

Reading the text of the law (and not the statement about it from the twitter poster) it is specifically targeting certain “treatments”. I haven’t studied them to know if they are safe or not, but do agree that exposing children to unsafe treatments could be conceived as child abuse. On the other side, if they are proven safe and doctors feel it is the best option for a child’s medical and mental well being, then any treatment that promotes that should be allowed.
This is a pretty controversial subject and my opinion is largely in agreement with this opinion piece from Newsweek:
“Finland and Sweden have largely stopped providing such medical interventions to trans-identified youth except in carefully controlled studies, not because of politics but because among the successes are poor results, like children with osteoporosis or increasing numbers of detransitioners who medically transitioned and regret it.”
What is your take on Sweden doctors turning away from puberty blockers and what not? A lot of doctors seem to have concerns about the safety of such treatments. I’m on the side of keeping children healthy and safe, not the politics of it or politicians that disregard those things.
What are your thoughts on parents being allowed to “treat” gender dysphoria in utero (using tech such as CRISPR) if a predisposition is genetically identified? I promise you, this is the way some of these topics will be addressed by some places in the near future (if not already).
There are so many things that I love about my home state, but this is an absolute fucking disgrace. I agree with @nicknyr15 - it truly seems like humanity is circling the drain.
On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) will now use the weight of the law against attempts to restrict trans teens’ access to gender-affirming health care, as well as countering the threats to the health care professionals who provide it.
This headline is so misleading. Did I miss something in this letter? According to what was posted not all trans children will be investigated, but only those who have undergone certain medical procedures.
“Greg Abbot has officially directed Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers.”
False. They are no investigating ALL families of trans gender kids. And the majority will not be the target for prosecution.
“He has also instructed all teachers, doctors, and caregivers to begin reporting any trans students they see.”
False. mandatory reporters are not required to report any trans students they see. Simply not true. They will be required to report if they have reason to believe an illegal procedure was performed.
What Texas is doing is banning sex-altering surprises (*edit: this includes surgeries or any “surprise” that makes your genitalia spontaneously fall off) and similar procedures including those that remove body parts.
Most trans children do not receive sex confirmation surgery or hormones. And I would agree that some procedures and medications like that should require a minimum age. I don’t know what that age should be, 8, 12, 16, 18, I don’t know. But if we’re going to discus this topic let’s not start off with misleading titles that say parents of ALL trans children will be investigated and prosecuted. The truth is only a very small percentage will.
If I’m reading that title I’m thinking if I’m a dad who lets my daughter dress up like a boy and go to school, I’ll be investigated and prosecuted for abuse. That’s not what is happening.
the larger point is trans people are being targeted by the state government. focus should be there instead of a headline or whatever the fucking irrelevant point you make.

It doesn’t appear to me that you wrote all of this yourself. And a “very small percentage” of trans children being investigated doesn’t seem to bother you? Good to know.
I did write it all myself. You won’t find it on the internet or anywhere else. I read the intro. Clicked on the letter and read the details and pointed out what was wrong. It wasn’t difficult.
the larger point is trans people are being targeted by the state government. focus should be there instead of a headline or whatever the fucking irrelevant point you make.
Pointing out misinformation shouldn’t be an irrelevant point. The first two opening lines that start off this thread are completely false. How is pointing out the introduction to the topic of this thread is false irrelevant? I said let’s have this discussion, just don’t start it on misinformation that all trans families are being targeted for prosecution. They’re not. Let’s start with the facts and let the discussion go from there.
I did write it all myself. You won’t find it on the internet or anywhere else. I read the intro. Clicked on the letter and read the details and pointed out what was wrong. It wasn’t difficult.
Where or how did you come up with the term, “sex altering surprises?” And make the leap that that is what Tejas is banning? Based on the letter on the first post?

That was a typo that I turned into a joke after Poncier posted that meme to make fun of my typo. I doubt you’ll find that term anywhere on the internet. Since sex altering surprises isn’t a thing, and I mention surgeries, I figured it would be obvious it was a typo. You really think your genitals can fall off if you’re surprised?

More to the point it's trans kids and their families being targeted. This is just more fear, hate, and ignorance. And anyone who tries to excuse any of it is complicit.

So complaining about accuracy while making a “joke” that is inaccurate? Do I have it right now?
Judge partially blocks Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to treat gender-affirming care as child abuse By María Luisa Paúl and Casey Parks March 02 at 10:00 PM EST A Texas judge on Wednesday partially blocked enforcement of Gov. Greg Abbott’s order to treat gender-affirming care as child abuse, court documents show. The decision by Judge Amy Clark Meachum stems from a lawsuit filed on Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas and Lambda Legal, the LGBTQ legal advocacy group. The lawsuit seeks to block a statewide directive ordering the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFSP) to investigate parents who allow their children to medically transition genders for possible crimes. Meachum’s ruling grants a temporary restraining order to the plaintiffs represented in the case, but it does not prevent Texas from investigating other parents. The judge will consider that question in an additional hearing on March 11. Within hours of the ruling, the state appealed the decision in what Lambda Legal counsel Omar Gonzalez-Pagan called a “very unusual, cruel and frankly, extraordinary move.” “They’re seeking an appeal for a temporary restraining order that applies only to four plaintiffs,” Gonzalez-Pagan said. “It is a cruel and punitive zealousness with which the Texas governor and attorney general are proceeding to persecute transgender youth and their families. It is reprehensible and should really cause alarm for everybody.” The offices of the state’s attorney general and the governor did not immediately respond to requests for comment. [ACLU files lawsuit over Texas governor’s order to treat gender-affirming care for kids as child abuse] According to the lawsuit, officials had begun investigating parents of transgender kids one week after Abbott (R) directed the state’s health agencies to handle certain gender-affirming treatments as crimes. In his letter, the governor noted that the Office of the Attorney General, Ken Paxton, had determined that providing medical treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy could “legally constitute child abuse” under Texas law. “I hereby direct your agency to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation of any reported instances of these abusive procedures in the State of Texas,” Abbott wrote to the commissioner of Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. [‘These are powerful people who are attacking children’: Parents respond to Texas’s latest anti-trans directive] Among the families the department had began probing, the lawsuit shows, was a mother who works for the department responsible for the investigations. According to documents filed in Travis County district court, Jane Doe is an employee of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Her 16-year-old daughter, Mary Doe, is transgender and has been receiving medical care from the same pediatrician for most of her life. After her pediatrician diagnosed her with gender dysphoria, she has received treatments that include puberty blockers and hormone therapy to initiate a female puberty. The day after Abbott issued his order, Jane Doe was placed on leave from the Department of Family and Protective Services, court documents say. Two days later, a child protective services investigator visited the family’s home, court documents say, and interviewed both parents. They also interviewed Mary Doe separately from her parents. The family is now living in “constant fear,” court documents say. Jane Doe is unable to sleep, and Mary, who is typically joyful, is now moody, stressed and overwhelmed.

You don’t think it is also a fear tactic to have a tweet that says ALL trans families will be investigators and prosecuted? And says teachers are required to report ALL trans children? And then later encourages trans people to leave Texas. Spreading that misinformation is as much of a fear traffic as anything I’ve seen.
