    Well said, Nick.  It really feels like things are becoming unhinged.  I can never fully accept the cynical and pessimistic view that says we will never evolve away from hate and war to become a better creature, but I can also never fully dismiss it.  I am recently having a hard time feeling hopeful for humanity.  And I don't like feeling that way.

    Reading the text of the law (and not the statement about it from the twitter poster) it is specifically targeting certain “treatments”.  I haven’t studied them to know if they are safe or not, but do agree that exposing children to unsafe treatments could be conceived as child abuse.  On the other side, if they are proven safe and doctors feel it is the best option for a child’s medical and mental well being, then any treatment that promotes that should be allowed.
    This is a pretty controversial subject and my opinion is largely in agreement with this opinion piece from Newsweek:

    “Finland and Sweden have largely stopped providing such medical interventions to trans-identified youth except in carefully controlled studies, not because of politics but because among the successes are poor results, like children with osteoporosis or increasing numbers of detransitioners who medically transitioned and regret it.”

    What is your take on Sweden doctors turning away from puberty blockers and what not?  A lot of doctors seem to have concerns about the safety of such treatments.
    I’m on the side of keeping children healthy and safe, not the politics of it or politicians that disregard those things.

    What are your thoughts on parents being allowed to “treat” gender dysphoria in utero (using tech such as CRISPR) if a predisposition is genetically identified?  I promise you, this is the way some of these topics will be addressed by some places in the near future (if not already).

    This headline is so misleading.
    Did I miss something in this letter? According to what was posted not all trans children will be investigated, but only those who have undergone certain medical  procedures.

    “Greg Abbot has officially directed Family and Protective Services to begin investigating all trans children in Texas and prosecuting their parents as child abusers.”

    False. They are no investigating ALL families of trans gender kids. And the majority will not be the target for prosecution.

    “He has also instructed all teachers, doctors, and caregivers to begin reporting any trans students they see.”

    False. mandatory reporters are not required to report any trans students they see. Simply not true. They will be required to report if they have reason to believe an illegal procedure was performed.

    What Texas is doing is banning sex-altering surprises (*edit: this includes surgeries or any “surprise” that makes your genitalia spontaneously fall off) and similar procedures including those that remove body parts. 
    Most trans children do not receive sex confirmation surgery or hormones. And I would agree that some procedures and medications like that should require a minimum age. I don’t know what that age should be, 8, 12, 16, 18, I don’t know. But if we’re going to discus this topic let’s not start off with misleading titles that say parents of ALL trans children will be investigated and prosecuted. The truth is only a very small percentage will. 
    If I’m reading that title I’m thinking if I’m a dad who lets my daughter dress up like a boy and go to school, I’ll be investigated and prosecuted for abuse. That’s not what is happening.

    the larger point is trans people are being targeted by the state government. focus should be there instead of a headline or whatever the fucking irrelevant point you make.
