Yep love these threads for the same reasons. Great way to check out new music that others have enjoyed. Especially with streaming platforms. If you don’t dig it it doesn’t matter. Listen and move on. If you love it, awesome!

Neil Young made 39Barn39 his new album in a barn - The Washington Post

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Weak year for new releases, for bands that I follow. Most of my favorite bands released albums in 2020 (and they were great albums!), so this was an off-year. Here's my list, in general order of preference.

    Los Lobos -
Native Sons. A collection of covers of southern California songs.
Jay Gonzalez - Back To The Hive - (Multi-instrumentalist for the Drive-By Truckers; solo album)
Buffalo Nichols - Blues musician who opened for Drive-By Truckers.
Richard Thompson - Serpents Tears and Bloody Noses.
    Ben Kweller - Circuit Boredom
    John Mayer - Sob Rock.
    Mdou Moctar -  Afrique Victime,
Foo Fighters - Medicine at Midnight
Mark Lanegan - "Dark Mark vs Skeleton Joe"
    - I actually have not listened to this one yet.

The two releases from 2021 that I listened to far and away the most were a re-release (Taylor Swift - Red) and a live recording of a concert from 15 years ago (Drive-By Truckers - Live at Plan 9 records).

    Big Mess — Danny Elfman

Since it wasn’t made in 2021 (and for all we know the original artist likely never wanted it to see the light of day in the first place), I don’t think this one can be off-i-cal, so honorable mention goes to probably my favorite release of 2021: Welcome 2 America — Prince.

Its themes are prescient enough to sound as though it was made in 2021.

    Joe Wong - Nite Creatures
Jeff Ament - I Should Be Outside
    Lord Huron - Long Lost
    Quicksand - Distant Populations
Brandi Carlile - In These Silent Days
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Barn
Neil Young - Carnegie Hall 1970
The Dead South - Served Live
Pearl Jam - Moline Vault 10

I feel like we also need a spin-off thread “favorite vinyl purchase of 2021”.

I bought a ton of albums in 2021 but only a few would qualify as new music lol

    Listened to:

    Silver Synthetic - Silver Synthetic
My Morning Jacket - S/T and The Waterfall

Loved the Coral and Silver Synthetic. Not quite sold on MMJ.

Probably will check out the Nathaniel Rateliff record too. A few people have that in their lists.

I saw the Coral on their first tour of the states. I don’t think they were even old enough to drink at the place they were playing.

    1. Floating Points/ Pharoah Sanders - Promises
    2. Tyler the Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost
    3. Olivia Rodrigo - Sour
    4. Madlib - Sound Ancestors
    5. Lana DelRey - Chemtrails Over the Country Club
    6. Kacey Musgraves - Star Crossed
    7. Makaya McCraven - Deciphering the Message

I really did not listen to much new hip hop this year.  Love Madlib because I’m a longtime Freddie Gibbs fan but I haven’t heard Sound Ancestors yet.

Jubilee and Valentine were really good albums.

I usually enjoy compiling a Top 10 list however those lists usually start at #1 and fill in from there. Since I don't have a clear cut #1 this year here's a few I enjoyed:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Barn
    John Mayer - Sob Rock
    Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders - Promises
    Boldy James - Bo Jackson
    Billy Strings - Renewal
Tyler The Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost
    Adele - 30
The War On Drugs - I Don't Live Here Anymore
    Leo Nocentelli - Another Side
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - I Told You So
    Charles Lloyd - Tone Poem
    Nas - King's Disease II
    Flag Day - OST
    Dave McMurray - Grateful Deadication
Wild Pink - A Billion Little Lights
    Sturgill Simpson - TBOD&J
    Daniel Lanois - Heavy Sun
    My Morning Jacket - S/T
    Mdou Moctar - Afrique Victime
    Madlib - Sound Ancestors
  • I really like Lorde’s new album. Didn’t mention that one! My girls love her too!
