  • The End-

What were all those dreams we shared
    Those many years ago?
What were all those plans we made
    Now left beside the road?

    It's my fault now
Having caught a sickness in my bones
How it pains to leave you here
With the kids on your own
    Just don't let me go.

To me, this is about Eddie being away from his family while on the road and working. He feels bad that his woman is home with the kids and is urging her to hold on to their shared dreams. It's like his love song to Jill.

This is a song that I can relate to personally. I am a stay at home mom to 2 little girls and my man works around the clock. We are each kind of on our own path right now but we have dreams and goals for our family's future . . .in the meantime 'Just don't let me go'.

Now I have heard a few different things about who eddie is talking about in 'off he goes' but would love to know the truth! Dont give me a hard time about this but I read a comment on youtube and the guy said the song was about Kurt Cobain and that Eddie wrote it a week after kurt died! I guess i can see how he had perfect unkept clothes and he always had a strain on his face but last i remember they didnt like eachother so what do you think?

I always thought that this song was about Jack Irons, struggling with his bipolar disorder, but what do I know...

And the song(s) that best describe Eddie? I would say the whole catalogue. (The songs he penned.) He wrote the damn things. There should be something autobiographical in there, even unintended.
Give Off He Goes another listen, and think of him singing about/looking at himself...

I feel Eddie writes his songs from others perspectives often. The songs are not always about his own personal experience but what he would feel if it were him. This a sign of a very talented insightful writer.
I think he has lost people in his life now and imagines through his words what he would be feeling if it were him leaving this world.
This is also very good for his audience because there are people out there who are facing leaving.
His pleading in the song brings emotion that can be related too, making it very real.
It is the single hardest thing we all face and I think he is singing to us about it.
When I face this I want his voice and his words near, in The End.

I would think all the ones he writes would have had a little piece of him. That is just my opinion of him as an artist.

    agree.
like so many people have said, every song he writes will contain emotions, feelings from somewhere inside of him.
you put yourself into the art that you make, at least that's what i think.

this is the only thing i've ever read about "Off He Goes"
Vedder said, "The song "Off He Goes" is really about me being a shit friend. I'll show up and everything's great and then all of the sudden I'm outta there..." It is also notable to point out that during a Pearl Jam performance on June 16, 2000 in Katowice, Poland at Spodek, Vedder said before starting the song that "this is about being friends with an asshole," and right after he made the statement he pointed at himself.
