Only he and his family know. The rest of us are only guessing I'd say. :p
    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&
  • in my tree includes clues about that point,i guess.
  • "wishlist" comes to mind, because there's a lot of insights in it about not just things he wants from life, but how he sees it.
she holds the hand that holds her down, she will rise above!
  • imo:

    thumbing my way
    the long road
    and sometimes.

i think these give us a glimpse of what's inside the real ed and helps the connection between ed and the every day fan.

Release seems so autobiographical and cathartic, especially given what we know about Ed and his family relationships.
  • up here in my tree..all the message is hidden in the song.
  • off he goes, its about him being a shitty friend

This is a great thread. It's changed my perspective on some songs.
That's what I love about Pearl Jam and why I've been a fan for so many years. Their music is always changing form and I can find so many ways of relating to them.

I like to think that "Porch", because it was in the beginning of Pearl Jam.....

and then "Not For You" because it spoke of the craziness regarding being popular and famous..........

also, I think (oh sorry, shoot can;t think of it's title.....) but the one about "hit me " oh is it "Save Yourself"? because well you know, talks about his life at the time it seems (just from looking outside in ;not knowing really).

and also "Life Wasted" because it looks a lot like some hard thinking he had done at that time....

but gosh a lot of the songs are so Eddie to me..........

    he is an awesome writer..........
Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on The Creek......

Together we will float like angels.........

In the moment that you left the room, the album started skipping, goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love.........

I would say Off He Goes could def be about him. I think the person he describes in the song sounds a lot like him. "Know one man, his face seems pulled and tense, like he's riding on a motorbike in the strongest winds."

I think Eddie would say that "Satan's Bed" best describes him. It's the kind of temptation that just follows him throughout his life and he battels with it continuesly. Torture.. Follows reward.. Follows torture...

I would definitely say Off He Goes

    Know a man
His face seemed pulled and tense
Like he's ridin' on a motorbike
    In the strongest winds
    So I approach with tact
    Suggest that he should relax
But he's always movin' much too fast

Said he'll see me on the flip side
On this trip he's taken for a ride
He's been takin' too much on
There he goes with his perfectly unkept clothes
    There he goes

    He's yet to come back
    But I've seen his picture
It doesn't look the same up on the rack
    We go way back
    I wonder 'bout his insides
It's like his thoughts are too big for his size

    He's been taken...where, I don't know
Off he goes with his perfectly unkept clothes
    There he goes

And now I rub my eyes, for he has returned
It seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned
For he still smiles... And he's still strong
Nothing's changed but the surroundin' bullshit
    That has grown

And now he's home and we're laughin'
Like we always did, my same old, same old friend
    Until a quarter to ten
I saw the strain creep in
He seems distracted and I know just what is going to happen next

Before his first step, he's off again

Believe it or not, it was my friends wedding song (which I found very weird!!)!!!

Yah, I saw a version of Off He Goes on you tube or something and he said, "Here is a song about being friends with an asshole." Then he waited a few seconds and said, "me." It went something like that.

Now I have heard a few different things about who eddie is talking about in 'off he goes' but would love to know the truth! Dont give me a hard time about this but I read a comment on youtube and the guy said the song was about Kurt Cobain and that Eddie wrote it a week after kurt died! I guess i can see how he had perfect unkept clothes and he always had a strain on his face but last i remember they didnt like eachother so what do you think?

I always thought that this song was about Jack Irons, struggling with his bipolar disorder, but what do I know...

And the song(s) that best describe Eddie? I would say the whole catalogue. (The songs he penned.) He wrote the damn things. There should be something autobiographical in there, even unintended.
