    Matt,

Trust me when I tell you that it's time to pick another song...It WAS great what you did with the song, passing along to your students (and probably many students to come)...but now...it seems like it's bordering on unhealthy...and I'm a little concerned... ease 'er down, dude...at least for a little while...please?

I disagree completely. Keep it up dude. People have been breaking down and teaching the Odyssey, MacBeth, Sonnnetts, etc for hundreds of years.

You guys are kinda creepy asking the guy to stop analyzing a song in a forum where you are encouraged to do exactly that. ????????

Apparently, its a work in progress if its always changing.

"Words and Music...Communication: What do the songs mean to you? Pearl Jam's lyrics and interpretations here."

What the song means to you is one thing. Your interpretation of the song is one thing. And those are amazingly personal and equally powerful ideas. The connection between ourselves and poetry and music and chords all bring out depths of feeling and connection and can take us places we thought we'd forgotten, but it's safe. You're not alone with a shared experience and what precisely the writer is speaking of should be irrelevant.

What you think the song says about a writer's personal life and/or emotional state goes in to a different direction. It's more of a level of probing that has nothing to do with the art at hand but more of a perusal into his garbage or his past or last weekend.

And ultimately, why would anyone care about the writer's personal life?

    It's the music that matters.

    But I've been wrong before.

Ed has said in interviews many times that he writes songs as a "character". A person he creates so he can write a song from that persons point of view (ala Springstein...he mentions Betterman in an interview as being the experiences of a made up character he created). Sure, sometimes the line is blurred and you dont know if its Ed or the character as he is a very emotional person. I would assume he draws on some of his personal experiences when creating the character, as I believe all artists do.

At the end of the day, I see nothing wrong with Mr. Maryland breaking things down this far. From what I have read, he is breaking down the character, not Ed personally.

I am not arguing, nor trying to persuade, this is just my perspective.

If anyone is to blame for breaking down Ed personal life, its me by mentioning how I would feel strange if my wife was singing a song so emotinally about a past love. I kept it on the personal level, not the character level. This is a strange converstion because the reason I love this band is because I believe the passion comes from true life experiences, not the emotion of a character.

    Ill stop. :)

It does seem as though some people are drifting into the dangerous area of speculation about the author's private life, very personal things that we as fans really do not have the right to know, unless that information has been put out there publically by the author himself.

This sort of speculation about what nationality the girlfriend was or what the current s/o thinks of the song is fine for private conversations of if you're a teenage girl. I don't think it belongs on the Message Pit.

Other people on here choose to share their personal info with other pit members, but Ed doesn't...and I don't think we have the right to air our speculations or fantasies about him here....This does not preclude discussing our own personal interpretations of the songs meanings. or sharing how we connect with the songs...

I don't know...maybe I'm in the minority. I am impressed that someone so young could have written such an amazing emotional song...but in the words of the great Graeme Edge, "it doesn't matter if your 18 or 80 - when you're heart's breaking, it HURTS!" Black is certainly heartbreaking, and the tags seem to be getting more hopeful (but the reasons for that, not really for us to say)...

    Besides, "Black" sucks.

we certainly do have the "right" to speculate, but we probably should stick to the original topic started, which is a discussion of the songs lyrics and variations in tags, da da da da..........
let's let the posters decide if this topic is dead or not. if it stays on the first page, than i guess there must still be a genuine interest.
all others can just "bleep" over it.

Dalai Lama—To say that humility is an essential ingredient in our pursuit of spiritual transformation may seem to be at odds with what I have said about the need for confidence. But there is clearly a distinction to be made between valid confidence or self-esteem, and conceit - which we can describe as an inflated sense of importance, grounded in a false image of self.

but if people lose interest, then they lose interest. I'll keep responding only if peeps are interested.

  • 54321,

If you happen to bump into the narrator from "Black," then please tell him to take two aspirin and get a good night's sleep....God only knows that he could use the rest....after having been dragged through the mud for the past 15 years by an aging grunge relic.....sheesh! ...not to mention my near-ever-present resurrection of the thread....that's going to leave any narrator exhausted….not to mention the readers.

If we can't laugh at ourselves, at whom can we laugh?

My "black" came back into my life recently. All the emotions are still there. It has been 17 years total!!! No, it never goes away. I want him more now than I ever have.

Yes...I think that we can all relate to that one loss that still stings all those years later.

Are you saying that "Black" is "Blechhhh"? ;)

I must say that this thread and the other one like it has caused me to take a break from "Blechh". But that's not a bad thing...I listen to the live Bridge Show last year once in awhile...That was awesome! Well worth the drive to witness - and help out the kids, too...

  • Amazing song and I think all of us have had that one time where we can relate to the song. Some of us more. You can get lost in McCready's solo and Ed's tags...

WOW. Great analysis! I don't know how I missed this thread until now.

I have recently taken an interest in the different Black tags too after listening to the Santa Barbara 06 boot.

Looks like I have some downloading to do!

Also, there seems to be a gap here ... nothing from the 2000 tour and the 2003 tour seems to be under-represented too. Maybe there weren't a lot of Black tags in those tours, but I am going to listen to the boots I have to see if I cna find any more...

    Thanks :)

  • I'm going on two months and change in my "Black" period...and whenever I hear or play it, the emotions flow so well...and these tags are fit so perfeclty.
