Chad's bass drum volume was way too loud. He played very "busy" throughout the night. While I appreciated the energy of the drumming, In my opinion, it didn't serve a lot of of the songs very well and actually detracted from the vocals. I expect a much more controlled performance from Matt tonight.

From where we were sitting (VIP section, hanging back), the sound mixing felt off. The first songs sounded great, but once the full band was on stage there was so much bass/drums that it was hard to hear vocals or guitar or anything else. E.g. Olivia seemed to do a nice job on "My Father's Daughter," but it was a challenge to hear her, same with Ed on "Hard Sun;" meanwhile my rib cage was vibrating along with the bass.
I was in the lower part of the VIP and thought the sound was great until it got louder and louder and then it seemed that Eddie's vocals got lost in the mix.

I stood next to the VIP bleachers on night 1 in the GA area and Chad's drums were definitely loud.  I moved to the bleachers in the back for night 2 and it sounded way better.

Slightly spoiled tonight’s set by watching the soundcheck/private show Thursday and EV’s Friday set. But any chance to see Eddie, Glen and others interact and the random moments (EV tripping up on Wishlist at “never let you down”) reminds me why seeing multiple shows is worth it.

If anything, seeing Eddie bring his kids on stage to perform has been the real treat. Harper looked timid but Eddie did typical dad things (making faces, playfully leaning against her) to make her comfortable.

It’s always tough to gauge new tracks live before you can buy/stream them, but I’m guessing “The Haves” will connect at some point in time. Tons of new music to process between Earthlings, Flag Day and Gigaton since our last live shows. Excited to see a proper Pearl Jam setup tonight!

Felt like a funeral. “Eddie and the Vedders” have replaced Pearl Jam. Never thought I’d see the day.
DMB/Dave solo, Phish/Trey Anastasio Band, Foo Fighters/NHC/countless side projects - all played (or will play) shows this year.
    Sure, bud.
Anywho, I'm loving the Earthlings. There's room for side projects from every member of PJ (considering every single one of them has one or two). Let them do what they wanna do, and you can like it, or go listen to Mike Love's Beach Boys do the same 15 songs (in order) every summer.
From the snippets I've heard, I love Purple Rain, the Flag Day stuff, and Should I Stay flat out rocked B)
Do what you wanna do, and play what you wanna play, Ed. We love ya.

In general this is how Chad Smith plays and has always played. I don't love it, I don't think it especially serves the song; works more for RHCP because everyone in the band kind of plays that way all the time but in the case of what I've heard of the Vedder solo stuff — sort of Petty-leaning, lyric-focused songs — Smith would not be my choice as a drummer. If you're going to have Pino Palladino out there, get Steve Jordan on the kit.

I'll wait for the record to listen a bit closer but on first blush rhyming "above" with "above" and leading into "the haves have not / got half of what we've got" is... maybe not the best writing of Ed's career.

He also rhymes “way” with “way” on Long Way… in the chorus over and over.

Indeed. Not my favorite of his either, though I do love the overall Petty vibe off that tune. Sounds like a lost track from Highway Companion.

  • Ed was fantastic Saturday night...but the guy in front of me on the lawn may have stolen the show.  During Glen Hansard my wife and I were super impressed by his air guitar BUT then, when Danny Clinch joined Glen this guy started doing air harmonica -- he was super into it.  I had never seen that before.

  • setlist.fm shows an encore break between I'm One and Better Man, but I remember the break as being between Give Blood and Rockin' in the Free World. Am I misremembering? Was I just too damn happy and overjoyed to have any sense of when the band was and wasn't on stage?
