How many people every day die...and we fixate as a country (I know it was shared this is somehow global news) on a single case.
Not saying it is not sad, but the coverage is also sad. 16,000+ people were murdered in the US in 2019.
Totally agree. I hadn't followed this story but it kept popping up here and there so I got curios and looked into it briefly. Good grief, of course this is a tragic event, but one worthy of so much over-the-top attention? Sensationalist news, yeesh. "Fixation", even a better word for it. So strange the things our society finds worthy of our time.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
well to fair to the media covering this story…couple goes on vanlife trip, couple fights on trip, he slaps her, cops involved, couple separated by cops, then he returns home without her and both families hire lawyers…then he disappears.
Not your average murder mystery.
and I’m sure her parents lawyer involved the media…
At my wife's bookstore, there is a whole section of shelves of books about that kind of thing (with various twists of course) that I'm a bit embarrassed to way we carry and that sell so well. Basically there's nothing new about this at all. And there is an obsession a certain percent of the population have with sensationalist news. Just an observation, but to me it seems like a strange one.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
who said it was new. But at the current time it’s an unsolved murder mystery that peaked the medias interest…and their interest likely got peaked by her families lawyers…
unless I missed something where their is a very similar murder happening in the US.
True crime is the category... I find it very interesting
It's popular as all get out. If I were a better salesman, I would stock more in my little on-line business. I do have a hard back Helter Skelter lying around somewhere. But these days, who care about that amateur shit?

Remember that Colorado dad who killed his wife and kids and tried covering it up and we get to see all the cam footage in the house and the police footage etc. It was creepy and sad and astonishing, but it could be followed all on camera.
That is why this is news. Tons of people tollowed them and perhaps saw this coming. All these followers were garnering attention to it and finding evidence that helped lead police to finding the body.
Don't doubt the 'missing white girl syndrome' being ture at all, but this is a lot different.
I sure as hell would not obstruct justice. I also don't have kids so I don't know what it takes to stop loving them or, assuming you never do, what you would do for them, but I really believe that if my kid flat out murdered someone in cold blood, I'm not risking going to prison* for them. Get them a good lawyer if I can afford it? Maybe. But committing a felony? No.
*I don't know how often someone goes to prison for such things, but I suspect that in theory it can happen.

Who knows what the kid told them though. He could have made up some story of an accident/death while hiking, was worried he would get in trouble for it, panicked and took off home, family lawyer advises them not to say a word.... I could see a parent go along with that maybe? Its probably morally wrong of course because you have the girl's family desperate for answers.

that's true, but you know full well that fleeing makes it look worse; much, much worse, so you lawyer up and stay put. the parents gave him a full 4 days head start. if he is found guilty, they should be charged with obstruction.
I'm wondering if he tried to cover his tracks by texting her after he killed her.
If he tries to say that he left her behind because she wouldn't respond and then uses the "someone else must have killed her, look at all the people that have disappeared in that area over the years" defense.
The couple that gave him a ride provided some critical info on what he was doing without her. He clearly left her and the van behind for several hours at least.

yeah, same scenario as that guy who killed his wife in the middle of the night and "found" her cellphone with the text messages he had sent her after the murder.
I am fascinated by people like that who go their entire lives without much trouble and then are able to act so calm and collected after killing someone.

Theres a few other things to contemplate. Did the parents lie about where he went.... Ie making law enforcement look in the wrong place.
The other thing is Wyoming has the Death Penalty? If you were guilty and felt it would be pretty easy ro prove it, wouldnt you go out on the lam? Might even drive parents to lie. Jail is one thing... But death penalty is another.

I did read today that the parents took his car home from the park because it had a tow notice on it. If that is true I guess that makes sense.
Plus, neighbors had said they saw him mowing the yard and riding his bike on the street at some time prior to Gabby's parents filing the missing person report.

what also sucks is the fact that so many young people want to be influencers of some sort. there are too many of them already. we can't all be famous. unfortunately she ended up famous for the most incredibly sad reason. the irony is the other people that follow influencers got this story into the national headlines, so that is a good thing.
i hope they find this guy, but i have a feeling that he may have suicided. i do not think a young kid like that can last too long on the lam and he has to know everyone is looking for him.

If I’m not on social media, do I exist? The next generation of “look at me’ers,” influencers. We already have the tats, piercers, glow lights, boom boom car stereos, and loud mufflers and revved bikes. What’ll be next?
