If the rest of the album sounds like this, I will pass.
Not looking forward to EV going full folksy-bluegrass, and I'm not a huge Petty fan.
That’s an interesting take. I feel like it’s been the opposite. My ears have me believing that everything Ed has released solo until now has been folksy. This song actually had an electric guitar solo in it.

Definitely thought of Petty while listening to this, except that it's about 90 seconds longer than a Petty song would be. My first impression after one listen is that the music is solid, but I'm not sure I dig the lyrics. I'm sure it'll grow on me.
Ha! Ed picking up the torch, openly channeling his hero’s, all whilst creating his own brand of rock n’ roll? Oh yeah! Don’t give me Into The Wild 2. I love the singer/songwriter evolution flowing through this new song! Plus, who knows what bright future Olivia Vedder has following her Dad’s footsteps?
In addition to the obvious Petty influence (love that Benmont B3 all over this!), upon repeated listens, I'm getting some early 70's Laurel Canyon sound vibes as well. The more I listen, the more I feel like this is a bigger departure for him that it might seem on the surface. Can't wait for the album.

Actually it’s Harper Vedder singing backup vocals on this one according to an earlier post. Two pretty talented daughters…

This song just doesn't do it for me. "Took the long way on the freeway" is the laziest chorus EV has ever written. And shame on the official lyric video for saying "He should OF known." Jesus fucking Christ. Does everyone just flat out fail english class anymore? Should've, not "should of."
