I'm listening Black right now. I must admit, after hearing all those songs of Pearl Jam, I'm pretty sure that Black is Pearl Jam's greatest song in the PJ catalogue - A MASTERPIECE:D Those lyrics, the music, Mike's solo's unbelievable!!

Same here, funny was listening to mike's solo when reading this thread, the 4/23/03 show from Champaign Ill.
Seems the more you make
equals the loneliness you get
Black is very impressive live, but I think Betterman or Alive would be closer to Pearl Jam's Stairway To Heaven. 30 years from now, those songs will be their most requested and recognized.
Black, Betterman, Imortality, Release, Indifference, Daughter.....
hard to find songs that stand up against these ones!

I wasn't in attendance but the best version I've ever heard was Ottawa 05. Eddie tossed on the most amazing tag at the end I've ever heard....simply beautiful!!
I was there that night and, yes, it was an awesome version. I'm using part of the tag from that night as my sig.
" All the stars in the sky, thought you were up in mine
Still I wonder, I wonder......" "Black" tag 09-16-2005 Ottawa
Toronto 2003, Kitchener 2005, Montreal 2005, Ottawa 2005, Toronto II 2006, Albany 2006, Hartford 2006, Camden I 2008, Camden II 2008, Washington, D.C. 2008, Toronto 2009, Chicago I 2009, Columbus 2010, Noblesville, 2010
While I wouldn't say it's my favourite PJ song (I'd put Given To Fly, Even Flow and Porch at least above it), it is arguably Pearl Jam's most moving and emotive song and one on which Eddie's voice is really the leading element of the song.
Plus it's always a special moment in the live set

This is the Pearl Jam song I am closest to, in front of Thumbing My Way. I agree, it's a amazing masterpiece.
I had this huge crush on a girl... for months... and the words "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody elses sky but why can't it be mine?" always made me feel so sad, because I thought that was reality.. she would be. She's good enough to be a star and have a beautiful life with someone else... but now, she's my girlfriend! It's 3 months since we met, and I've had a crush on ever since (as said), and two weeks ago she became my girlfriend.
The song is like a mountain peak for the proof that love, no matter how hard it seems to reach, is still possible to get. I love her. I love the song. It made me the big Pearl Jam fan I am today.
that is a tag of kat powers "good woman", a song eddie sang backup vocals too... great song by the way.
This song is actually a Cat Stevens Song that Cat Power covered with Eddie on backing vocals
I saw Pearl Jam three times in concert and was lucky to hear "Black" at each of these concerts. The best version ever is, among the many I heard, definitely Marseillle. Still waiting to get Pittsburgh though, I read it was THE version...
Reading through the posts of this thread is enough to make my eyes water.
A special song. Love the Benaroya Hall version ... that album proves to me that to rock, you need to plug in to your heart and soul, not just the mains.

Thanks for sharing such a story...the music is pure power to believe
Black is the one song that makes me stop what I'm doing whenever i hear it. It just affects me in a weird way. I just listen and get so involved in the moment. I don't know if its my fav by them but its the only one that does this to me.
Black was being played the other day on the radio while I was at work. My colleagues know I am big PJ fan and I turned up the volume a little. Strangely enough I could hardly stand listening to it in a room with other people that do not appreciate the song. Not sure why, but it made me feel very vulnerable. The songs touches and moves me and that feels akward among non PJ lovers..

That's funny. I feel the exact opposite. When I listen to it with other fans I get hung up on how it's effecting them and feel like were all going to start crying. I feel like people who really aren't "hearing" the song will have no idea how it's effecting me leaving me free to bask in my melancholy emotions.
"Stunned by my own reflection, It's looking back, sees me too clearly and I swore I'd never go there again, Not unlike a friend that politely drags you down, down, down"
When you see me on the street, yell out "FAVO!!!"
I've been to alot of Pearl Jam shows; So fucking what.

Interesting how different people react to similar situations. Maybe I should stop worrying about how other feel about me...

I have been a PJ fan since I was a freshman in High School since 1992. throughout that time life brings you many ups and downs. But this song has truly been powerful as many other pearl jam songs over the years. Just recently going through a break with the girl I thought I was going to marry. This song helps with the pain.....
I am also in the phase of parting ways with the woman I thought would be my wife. Still after 2 months I can't believe this is happening. Listening to Black helps a bit.
Only reading this thread actually made me start crying.
This is the one song that can make me cry at any time, just about everywhere. There's such heartache and longing in EV's voice when he sings it. I can't ever get tired of listening. It gives me chills.
No question. Definitely a masterpiece.
How dark a woe! yet how sublime a hope!
How silently serene a sea of pride!
How daring an ambition! yet how deep--
How fathomless a capacity for love!
