I'm listening Black right now. I must admit, after hearing all those songs of Pearl Jam, I'm pretty sure that Black is Pearl Jam's greatest song in the PJ catalogue - A MASTERPIECE:D Those lyrics, the music, Mike's solo's unbelievable!!

    quite possibly
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

  • I agree:it is a masterpiece...
    En mi vida,
    el oscuro me mantiene
    cuando yo te vi
en la lluvia me prometiste tu sangre

    Estrella de la mañana
    Samael te persigo a ti
y si me quedo sin alas
    ademas me muero por ti

I totally agree! There is no song in the world that evokes the emotion from me, on a consistent basis that Black does.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this exact sentence at least 15 times on this board!

Well, I also can't stop talking about Black....
  • It is an outstanding song. I agree
  • I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky, but why
Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

It is so sad and beautifull, my all time favourite line....
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
    Butt-head: Well, they both suck.
  • Well, I also can't stop talking about Black....

Its a good thing noone is making us stop! I also want Black to be played at my wedding (if I ever have one) despite the break up inspired lyrics!

My favorite line also, especially when he sings "I f***ing know you will be a star" (I think its on Live at Benaroya)...so full of angst!

on tokyo i think he says " i efffin hope you'll be a star"

black what an ending with the echoes, the change is similiar in brilliance to the ending of blood

Definitely a masterpiece if the time and mood is right. Otherwise, it really doesn't do that much for me.

i'd be happy to agree that its their most enduring song... yer definitely

  • black is the most amazing song, its so full of emotion. the first time i heard it live when i saw pearl jam in barcelona it was so amazingly moving, tears were coming out of my eyes. the people next to me and around me and everywhere were so moved too, you could see other people crying. and we sang the song with him for like 10 minutes and it was just eddie going "we belong, we belong together"

when it was over the crowd went absofukinlutely insane. i was almost crushed people rushed the stage and rushed forward and everything

black is the most amazing song everrrrr! :]
  • I wasn't in attendance but the best version I've ever heard was Ottawa 05. Eddie tossed on the most amazing tag at the end I've ever heard....simply beautiful!!

Best version of Black. The end of the song always gives me goose bumps.
    I'll be back
  • uhhh the solo? Theres a ridiculously weak solo in this track....the song on the album, is fairly thin, but when played live with a fantastic solo, it is a masterpiece i agree...and when the vocals are more impressive.
  • I'll be back

Heard this live recently at Brisbane 1, and had this tag on it

    "Time heals......................
We weren't meant to be together......"

Seems like Ed is exorcising a lot of his demons these days.
It was a very beautiful version, Mike's solo became really ethereal, and the crowd went into a slow hypnotic clap. At the end Ed had his head in his hands and it seemed to me that he was very moved by it. I know I was.
I agree it is their absolute very best song.
NOw I just need a rotosphere to get the tone right.
    Music is not a competetion.
  • I agree:it is a masterpiece...

    I second that.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...
  • one of my favourite, especially after have heard it live.
after they' d finished, we kept on clapping and singing the ritornello.
ed turned and covered his face with the arm; i don't know if he cryed.
they put down the instruments and applaused us.
i' ve never felt like that before
sometimes you just need someone to say it's ok

Great all around song. Especially live during the song's outro when Ed does the "We belong, we belong, we belong together..." And Mike's solo you can tell is so full of pain and emotion it gives me the chills at times.
And before his first step... He's off again...
  • Marseille 06 - I was there... amazing.... incredible...

That is why.. im lying.. when i say i dont love you... dont love you... no more... no more... no more

    Their masterpiece.

Black is genius, pure and simple. Itd be great if some of you guys could upload your favourite versions like Nothingman54 so as we could all hear them. His/her link is dead but thats not the point!

Nice first post. Because a solo is what defines a great song. Like Dylan, he shreds. Way to miss the point.
  • i cant agree more. the song never gets old to me. the emotion...we all know the line, and i think we can all relate. most of us have felt exactly as ed did when he was inspired to write the lyric. i know i have anyway...not only is it my fav PJ song, it's my favorite song ever.

"we belong together, together, together..." camden '06 night 2. the whispering. i was there, and it was amazing. the highlight of the three shows i caught this year.
