I'm holding out for Thriller as the best of these.

Bobby Brown was a big seller?  No Shit?
  • Michael Jackson, Thriller
No way I am supporting Michael Jackson in this lifetime.  Sorry, I know this will bend people up but I would not bypass the opportunity to vote against him.

I do have to listen fully to a few of these, sure I know songs from them but not enough to vote if it is close.

The love he receives is the love that is saved

I found another list different to this and it has GNR, Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Purple Rain and a live Bruce album.

Oh my god, no wonder people talk about how the 80's sucked!  Look what incredible albums are missing from this list:

Dinosaur Jr:  You're Living All Over Me
The Replacements, Let it Be and Tim
    R.E.M. Murmur, Reckoning, Fables, Pageant
    The Dream Syndicate, Medicine Show
    Spacemen Three: The Perfect Prescription
The Dead Kennedy's, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
    Talking Heads, Remain in Light
Brian Eno and David Byrne: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
    Mission of Burma, Vs.
    Neil Young, Freedom
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Hard Promises
    David Bowie, Scary Monsters
The Psychedelic Furs,  Selt-titled, Talk Talk Talk
Lou Reed, The Blue Mask, New York

I'm sure there are more- these are just titles I picked scanning through my records.  I would put every one of these records up against anything on the best selling list.  What a frustrating decade that was!

As we know all too well - best selling doesn't always mean best. In my opinion it usually doesn't.

It all comes down to radio play and top 10 hits for sales.

Half the list doesn't surprise me. Big pop culture hits. I mean, MJ owned that decade. That Bon Jovi album was all over radio and still is. Bruce had 3 songs off that album that are still radio hits. Seems to be a common theme. They all had big radio success and were carried by a few massive singles.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Asia is a real head scratcher though. I just looked up that Bobby Brown album, wow, a lot of good songs on there. Classic grade school era R&B. Don't Be Cruel and My Prerogative are great songs.

Asia was #1 on the Billboard 200 chart for 9 weeks in 1982, the only album that matched it that year was American Fool.

With voting looking like it is, not a lot of "Heat of the Moment" fans out there..lol

Bobby and Whitney probably did more coke than the rest of the list combined. They were not a good match for each other.

Everybody in the 80's was coked up.  If you hadn't at least tried it, you probably lived in a convent.
Coke didn't make artists create mediocre records.  A mediocre listening public was responsible for that.

I thought Culture Club and The Police were bigger worldwide in the 80's?  Even U2 I'm surprised is not on here.  They were the biggest thing in the world at one time.  Joshua Tree I thought was up there.

All of this talking down about cocaine.

1983 - Synchronicity (top album for 10 weeks) was overshadowed by Thriller (top album for 22 weeks)
1987 - Joshua Tree was up against Slippery When Wet. (Teen girls buying albums was prolly the deciding factor there)
