I've only ever had one copy of A Box of Rain in my inventory, a nice hard cover with dust jacket. I wish I had held on to it longer (sold it a couple of years ago for about $50). I don't mean to sound discouraging but it's gotten to be very pricey.

Yeah these people can go pound sand. They sell regularly on ebay for $80. I'll pay that. For $500 Robert had better have signed it himself.
I feel the same way about a lot of records these days. It's getting hard to track down stuff at reasonable prices. I've had numerous people tell my I under-price the used records I sell at the bookstore. I don't care- I'd rather sell at a reasonable price than gouge. That's just not cool in my book.
Be careful buying books on eBay. I've been burned a few times. The joke about eBay booksellers is "Anyone with a closet full of books and a computer is a bookseller." I'm sure you know to do this, but read their seller feedback carefully and ask questions if in doubt. If I ever come across a copy of what you are looking for, I will sell it at a fair price.
Edit: I just checked eBays "sold" listings and you are right, some have sold for less than what is currently out there. Condition on them isn't great, but if you're not too fussy, at least the prices are better.
