Inside Job

Any thoughts on Inside Job and it's meaning. It seems to send a positive message, but I can't really get into anything specific with it. Thanks.

Underneath this smile lies everything
all my hopes, anger, pride and shame

make yourself a pact, not to shut doors on the past
just for today,... I am free

I will not lose my faith
It's an inside job today

I know this one thing well,...

I used to try and kill love, it was the highest sin
breathing insecurity out and in

Searching hope, I'm shown the way to run straight
pursuing the greater way for all,... human light.

How I choose to feel,... Is how I am.
How I choose to feel,... Is how I am.

I will not lose my faith
It's an inside job today

Holding on, the light of night
On my knees to rise and fix my broken soul

Again.

Let me run into the rain
To be a human light again

Let me run into the rain
To shine a human light today

Life comes from within your heart and desire
Life comes from within my heart and desire
Life comes from within your heart and desire

i think it's about being at peace with your past and as it says "not shutting doors on it" and accepting it and being in conrtol of how you feel.i love this song, it's my anthem, i guess we can all relate to it.

Ya know I scribbled this song onto one of my bedroom walls.
I'm nuts!! Wonder what 'Cready would think about that??

Wow... with that explanation, you might have unintentionally just given me a whole new perspective on how to deal with past troubles... thanks, man. I have to listen to the song now. Hmm... it's not about shutting doors on the past and wishing it went away, it's about acknowledging it and growing stronger because of it. Anyone can run away from the past, but it truly takes strength to stare it in the face and accept it. Maybe that's what Mike was trying to convey? Wow. Talk about an epiphany.

Anyway, the song was probably written about the recovery from alcoholism, but it can be applied to almost every troubling situation. The song for me is about recovery in general. It's really uplifting.

well it's good to know you got something out of it :)
i love the way pj write songs you can apply to a whole lot of different situations
it IS really uplifting thats why i love it, i always put in on when i drive down to my hometown and i'm about 5 mins away from arriving, last time i did that it ended exactly when i arrived and turned the car off, what a coincidence lol

And that is what I got out the lyrics... it's was and still is helping deal with and learn from my past..
Every morning when wake up that's the song that I see
And that is the song the I read while I get up and open my bedroom door.
Cuz the wall I wrote it on, is the one right next to my door..
I just realized while writing this that, It's the best place to scibble this song on, of all the walls in my room. The one wall that my door is attached to is the one that Screams those word the Mike wrote.. how conventional.

well stated. to take it a bit further, i also think it's about taking control/responsibilty for your own life and choices...it's an 'inside job'...meaning it all must come from within, it's all your own choice...etc.

    best line:

    how i choose to feel . . . is how i am

You nailed it :) Atleast that is what I've taken from the song.

    Love it.

What a well done song. And probably one that could not have been written if the writer hadn't been through a trial or two.

So long and drawn out explanations from me would probably not do this song any real justice...instead the song speaks to me in a simple way:

Reconciling your self with your self.

    It's that exactly.

It's a recovery song and how you have to pull it together yourself.

come back (holding on)>inside job (letting go), two of my favorites off the new album, is a great way to end the album.

Come Back and Inside Job is the nicest pairing since Faithfull and No Way
They're so fantastic at the end of the album, they feel like a huge release, as if a huge problem has been lifted from you. I love listening to them on their own, without the rest of the album. And there's not many songs I can say that about.

    Kudos guys :)

Agreed! I love the opening 5 tracks, then the middle is a bit of a lull for me. But then we get to Wasted Reprise and it just builds and builds. Come Back and Inside Job paired together is pure genius. And they're both great to play on guitar!

The intro to Inside Job is just beautiful. There's an underlying tension in the music, and the way the instruments come in one by one just creates this building feeling. It feels like it's summing up the feelings of the whole album, even though Eddie doesn't sing a word. It's breathtaking.

This song really spoke to me in Cincinatti. It reminded me of why I'm a fan. This band has been there for me through the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. Being so fucking happy that night and seeing them rock out, and hearing the song and its lyrics made me realize that I can always turn to them.

    what it means to me

even if you can't "change" the "world" (your own personal world, the world you are in, the world in general, etc)
u STILL CAN really bring CHANGE... change of HEART, change of perspective.

The song reminds me of the stuff you learn in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, you make your choices and you live with them (good or bad)...can't erase the past or change it, so decide your perspective on things from now on. Live in the moment....This song at the Gorge just caused me to have such a big epiphany, it made me all emotional -- but in a good way! I felt a weight lift off my shoulders (as indicated in AET)...Inside Job and I Am Mine go well together, for me...No matter my past, the present and future are up to me and how I choose to feel and react...

If you had told me before the record came out that this would be the case, I would not have believed it.

What's strange is that lyrically it's the worst on the album (I'm talking fluency, etc etc all that crap) but it hits like a brick.

Bingo. Once you can fully appreciate this line and all of it's implications, you should have a good idea of the song as a whole. Not only that, this line is the "turning point" of the song.
