Leonard Leo is a lawyer, but he's never argued a case in court. He's never held elected office.

But for years he rebuilt the American legal system, resulting in the Supreme Court's right-wing supermajority.

need to verify of course,  but rando sfbook post....

BREAKING🚨 The Supreme Court is hearing a case TODAY that decides if police can track every phone at a protest with one warrant.

In *Chatrie v. United States*, the justices are finally confronting “geofence warrants” — mass data grabs that force companies like Google to reveal every device that passed through a certain area in a certain time window.

Lawfare notes that in this case, police used a geofence around a robbed bank to pull in location data, then worked backward to identify a suspect.

Civil liberties groups warn this same tool has already been used after protests and political events, sweeping up thousands of innocent people in one digital dragnet. Today’s arguments will signal whether the Court is willing to treat that as a normal search or a constitutional red line.

Here’s what’s at stake. Traditional warrants target *a person* based on probable cause. Geofence warrants target *a place* and scoop up everyone who happened to be nearby — from a bank customer to a journalist covering a march to a kid cutting through a parking lot.

Most people didn’t knowingly agree to hand the government a history of everywhere they’ve been, but the lower court ruled that simply enabling Google’s location services means you assumed that risk. One dissenting judge warned that the ruling effectively gives the government a “virtually unrestricted right” to demand people’s movements from tech companies.

If the Supreme Court blesses that logic, imagine what a second Trump administration does with it. Every protest outside an ICE detention center, every “No Kings” march, every campus encampment, every clinic vigil could be turned into a list of phones — and then into a list of names.

Police wouldn’t need to catch you doing anything except being present. And because geofence warrants are secret and technical, you might never know your data was taken unless you end up in court.

On the other hand, a strong ruling against geofence warrants would be one of the few things actually pushing back against the merging of Big Tech and Big Government surveillance.

It would say that the Fourth Amendment still means something even when the data lives on Google’s servers instead of in your pocket. That matters not just for protests, but for anyone who has ever been near a crime scene, a controversial event, or the “wrong” neighborhood.

The justices will spend the day talking about doctrine and precedent. What’s really on the line is whether attending a protest in Trump’s America automatically puts your name in a searchable government database.

If you appreciate my posts, it would mean the world if you followed my page. Thank you for being here.

The Supreme Court did it again, this time eviscerating the Voting Rights Act. Now states will be free (as they were before an earlier, wiser Court said enough) to draw boundaries that exclude those uppity minorities who might have the temerity to vote against the current regime. We of a certain age remember all too well the bloody decades-long struggle to guarantee that people of color had the right to vote in America. This Court, apparently, forgot.

There is a house in my old hometown (Greenville, OH) that has a lawn jockey out in front of their house on a pedestal like that.  Dark black face and large brightly painted lips (orange I think but I'm color blind).

I was pretty shocked driving by it.

Yeah there are a few plastic places there. I'm pretty sure Darke County is one of the highest trump supporting counties in the country. Just an amazing amount of people voting against their own self interests.

    Also an extremely racist county.

    (IN)Justice John Roberts
    "Dear Justice Roberts,
"It has come to my attention through your various media appearances that your feelings are hurt — that people view you and your Court as political actors, which you insist is not an accurate understanding of what the Court does.
"So let me resolve the confusion: the misunderstanding is yours, not ours.
"People believe your Court is political because it is and acts so in plain view of the nation.
"You unleash unlimited corporate money into elections by inventing constitutional protections for concentrated wealth. You dismantle voting protections while dining with the very political movement that benefits from their destruction. You expand presidential immunity in ways conveniently favorable to a corrupt executive you have rewarded with extraordinary deference, 90% deference. And then you perform public astonishment when Americans recognize your pattern.
"Your Court did not merely 'interpret' the Constitution. It selectively hollowed it out whenever democratic participation threatened entrenched power.
"Citizens United accelerated America’s transformation into an oligarchy where billionaires and corporations wield more political influence than millions of citizens combined. Shelby County gutted the Voting Rights Act, after which states moved with remarkable speed to burden the very voters the Act was designed to protect. The immunity ruling signaled that sufficient power can place a president beyond meaningful accountability.
"Then you publicly mourn the collapse of trust. What exactly did you think would happen?
"Legitimacy is not something a court grants itself while issuing ideologically convenient outcomes wrapped in constitutional language — when the public is fortunate enough to even receive a full opinion instead of another consequential ruling buried in the shadow docket.
"Legitimacy is earned through restraint, consistency, ethical seriousness, and fidelity to principle even when principle is inconvenient to power.
"This is precisely the credibility your Court squandered. We understand perfectly well what we have been watching. We all see you and your court and its role in what our nation has become.
"And we are furious — not because we are too ignorant to understand constitutional law, but because we are capable of reading the Constitution you claim to defend- while watching this Court repeatedly twist it to serve its own ideological will.
"History will remember this era. And it will remember you and your Court- not as a guardian of constitutional democracy, but as a key institution that eroded it. That is already your legacy, so stop whining- you earned a nation's scorn."
