I've always scratched my head at people who claim trying to get an underrepresented group represented is somehow racism. he's not saying he's going to just nominate any old nobody who isn't qualified. this is in line with diversity hiring practices that have been going on for decades. generally, only white people have a problem with it.

I just don't get why he does this. He did the same thing with when he was picking a VP. Just pick a black woman if you want to. If you say it ahead of time, you look like you're picking the person based on their race, rather than because of their merits and regardless of race.

Reagan saying that (I assume about Sandra Day O'Connor) and now Biden saying that about whatever black woman he's going to pick, makes the nominee look more like just a race/gender statistic than an actual person.
Take Jackie Robinson for example. He's celebrated not just for being the first black major leaguer, but because he was immensely talented, driven, and he pushed through all the bullshit that he was up against. A true hero. But, if the Dodgers signed him simply because they wanted to sign a black dude, so they would seem more progressive or less racist, that would undermine his greatness as a player and as a man. Maybe that's why Obama is so respected and Kamala Harris isn't. Obama broke through based on his own talents, and Harris was selected as VP based on her race and gender. Maybe she had other things going for her (none that I've noticed), but Joe's declaration that he was going pick a woman, and then specifying it would be a woman of color after George Floyd died, suggests that her race/gender was at the top of her "resume" for Joe.

Take Jackie Robinson for example. He's celebrated not just for being the first black major leaguer, but because he was immensely talented, driven, and he pushed through all the bullshit that he was up against. A true hero. But, if the Dodgers signed him simply because they wanted to sign a black dude, so they would seem more progressive or less racist, that would undermine his greatness as a player and as a man. Maybe that's why Obama is so respected and Kamala Harris isn't. Obama broke through based on his own talents, and Harris was selected as VP based on her race and gender. Maybe she had other things going for her (none that I've noticed), but Joe's declaration that he was going pick a woman, and then specifying it would be a woman of color after George Floyd died, suggests that her race/gender was at the top of her "resume" for Joe.
