How Do We Even Know...(2021 TOUR)

Sorry if this has already been discussed...been off the grid for a spell.

Glad to see PJ has set the dates for the 2021 Euro tour. But how do we know these shows will even happen?

Back in the spring my three big summer shows here in Detroit: Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, and Smashing Pumpkins/Guns N Roses were postponed, rescheduled for October, and then finally cancelled. Only Guns N Roses has rescheduled, for next summer, and I even have my doubts that will even go on.

I'm truly thrilled Pearl Jam and the venues have seen fit to put these dates on the calendar; doing so provides a shred of the hope we all need right now. Just wondering what gave them the confidence to do so? It seems like a gigantic risk for morale, logistics, etc.

Did I miss something?

Thanks for reading.

We don't. Everything being rescheduled now is a big assumption and it's probably part of the reason why we don't have any set USA dates other than two in over a year from now.

US dates will take awhile as the NBA and NHL has first dibs on all of the arenas. All music acts will have to wait until those schedules are released to see what dates are then available.

To an extent this is going to be true but I do not believe that has to be the case for the concerts that are postponed as it was not the case for some of the shows that decided to reschedule after cancelling in March/April and moving it to this fall. We all should know at this point that they had a huge fall tour planned with both legs being included. This was all done with no new schedules from the pro sports teams.

Now that we have had a lengthy delay and everyone is going to be fighting for those dates it is going to be a lot harder to fit everyone in but I think Pearl Jam is playing it smart right now. Those that cancelled the tour or did not have dates planned may have a harder time getting the new dates first when we are allowed to have concerts again over those that postponed. I am not 100% sure about that of course but it makes sense that those that had tours delayed get dibs before those that did not. Or who the fuck knows and its going to be a huge mess next fall schedule wise. Fingers crossed we can have something next year.

Every college basketball arena in the country will likely be available until Jan 1st.

There are 3 full size arenas at one intersection near my house in case they are looking for somewhere to play. Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd. Or go one block down to Thomas and Mack. Or a block in the other direction to the new Raiders stadium. Or play a club show at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. Or join the over the hill groups and play the arena at The Orleans.

In response to the OP, the reschedule announcement from PJ said directly within it that the new schedule is subject to safety.

I think that means it is contingent on a vaccine (or miracle cure).  If you read the news some people think by next June a lot of the world will have been vaccinated.  There are others who don’t think that is realistic and would say see you in 2022.

It’s anybody’s guess but I am glad there are at least some dates on paper.

May is 257 days away. To put that in comparison it has only been 160 days since they postponed their tour. That is a long time from now to say no way. Unlikely maybe but I am not going with no way just yet!

My family is not planning on attending any concert until sometime in 2022.  We'd like to see how these vaccines are going to work.  And, if people can't wear a damned mask (or wear it correctly) am I having faith that they are going to get a vaccine?  No.  We'll hold and continue to support the music industry by purchasing physical merch/media when we can.

Nothing wrong with a safety first approach.

One thing I would say though is that although it may also prevent onward transmission, the vaccine primarily protects the vaccinated, whereas the mask strategy relies on other people to wear theirs (unless you have a medical mask).

If I am fortunate enough to receive a vaccine, I would go to a show for sure and not worry about whether the other people at the show have got it.  I would hope everyone has an equal opportunity to get it though.

The vaccine isn't going to be 100% effective though and it sounds like it will probably help 50% to 70% of people.  I agree with you and would do the same, but I would still mask up and take precautions.

Part of the reason for the final testing phase is to understand the effectiveness. If it’s only 50% effective it is still worth getting but would not unlock mass gatherings.  When I say I’d go if I have the vaccine, I’m assuming at least 80% effective.  And certainly I’d have no issue masking up in addition if it would get shows back sooner.

The only vaccine that has been approved is the one in Russia and most other countries are saying Russia cut corners on testing.  As far as I am aware there is no approved vaccine anywhere else on earth, although there are a few that are getting close.

Yes it's China so you can interpret it however you choose to and I know our circumstances in the US are very different. But there are three things we do know... it started here, they imposed brutally tough lockdown measures and now they are living as close to normal as any other city in the world. Maybe its all propaganda or maybe they just sacrificed heavily to put themselves in the position they are in now. Either way this event did happen, less than 9 months after the city being a complete disaster. I don't pretend to be an expert but if each major metropolis in the US isolated themselves for say 6 weeks, no travel between states, mandatory masks, sufficient testing etc I'm pretty sure we'd be enjoying PJ shows next summer. I guess we are too proud and "free" to actually do something that logical though. With that said I sadly don't see US shows until sometime in 2022.

I don't think we do know.   Like most other things CoronaVirus related, it's the world figuring it out as we go along.

If you don't try and prebook venues next year, you run the risk of not being able to find venues to book a tour in.   On the flip side you also run the risk of having to conduct a 2nd postponement.

To be honest I'm not sure concerts would of come back had Trump done a bad job or not.  The major problem with Coronavirus is that it's a spark in a dry forest.  Had Trump done a better a job, and shown leadership, and convinced other US leaders into a more controlled solution, you don't change the spark in a dry forest problem.  You hold a big mass gathering, you run the risk of spreading the virus to 1000's and 1000's of people.  Even if only a few people who showed up had the virus?   That problem doesn't really change in the current US situation, or a better outcome.    Most people haven't been infected yet, ergo a mass gathering would cause it to catch like wildfire.

I figure we don't get concerts until we have a vaccine, or we give up and say fuck it because no one found one.

am I missing something? aren't there scientist around the world working 24/7 on a vaccine? Aren't there several in the pipeline that show major promise? Do you really think there will not be something ready in the coming months? Come on. It's happening sooner than later.  This will be a thing of the past a year from now just like everything else that happens. Panic, then move on to the next dilemma. Anyone remember 9/11? Concerts by summer 2021 and back to regular life. IMO
