I should have checked on Friday to see if there was any significant jump in streams. I haven't seen it in the top 100 in iTunes Rock. So it hasn't helped much in sales. Amazon is not showing song rankings anymore
In the video game it took place in 2033 and the virus started in 2013. The HBO series will take place in 2023 with the virus beginning in 2003. So I don't know if they'll use Future Days. Although movies or TV shows from books and video games don't always take 100% from the source.
Fans of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us game series knew going
into the HBO adaptation that changes would be made. While most of the TV
show's first episode is recognizable to those who played the games,
there are also some immediate differences. The storytellers made an
intriguing decision with their timeline that, unfortunately, means fans
are unlikely to see Joel sing Pearl Jam's "Future Days" to Ellie.
The Last of Us opens with Joel during the outbreak of the mutated Cordyceps fungus.
Yet the circumstances are slightly different, because rather than 2013,
the outbreak happens in 2003. Showrunner Craig Mazin may have made this
change to set the outbreak closer to September 11, 2001. The September
11 terrorist attacks and the United States' response to them seem like
the allegory the show's creative team is leaning into. And in the grand
scheme of things, it's just a minor change affecting things like
technology available and pop culture. Except, "Future Days" is a bit of
pop culture Pearl Jam didn't get around to creating until 2013.
I love how we’re talking about a video game where a fungus turns people into zombies who are almost impossible to kill and the reality check people have is that Future Days didn’t come out until after the apocalypse, so it can’t be in the show. I was on board with the zombies, but where I draw the line is using a song from 2013 in a 2003 setting!
I really don't understand all this talk about if Future Days can be in it and what alternatives there are. For one. It's a show adapted from a video game about zombies. Is anyone really going to be like "I was all into this zombie show, but then they played a song post apocalypse, now I'm out"? And two, if it really is that important for the song to be there, they can easily find a way. Play it off as a song Joel wrote. Play it off as a popular song that existed already. 99% of the people watching the show aren't going to know its from LB and remember when that album came out. Everyone who probably knows that is on this forum. I just figure if they really want FD on next season it will be there. If they don't care that much, they'll find another song.

The majority of the people who played the game know by now. I agree that they can still use it if they want. He suggested an alternate timeline for example. But if there's a chance to get more Pearl Jam on the show. I'm for that too.
I think I have a solution that works. Can’t someone write the Showrunner and have Joel “write” a song for Ellie? He can tell her something along the lines that his favorite band was Pearl Jam and hes been trying to write a song iilike Ed would and after all this time together he thinks he’s got it? And then he plays. It’s not like hes jamming out in the VG version, he’s like a guy plucking a guitar and throwing out meaningful words. Meanwhile, it puts PJ back on peoples minds which I love. They can even have an end credit thanking PJ for the song. Case closed, someone write the person making decisions

I think the perfect thing to do is have Joel and Ellie on their journey find themselves entering an old warehouse type place with music instruments and recording equipment or just a music studio. Inside they find a suitcase…..we know the one 😉 and inside the lyrics to Future Days.
That way it could have been written years before it would have been put on the album.
That could work! He could say, “I’ve seen this briefcase before from my favorite band” Any homage to PJ is Fantastic. Either way, if this song is in the season opener of season 2, listens will BOOOM! (Lucky enough to hear it live at Wrigley 2013)
omg Joel could even say something awesome like “I hope 1 of them have made it, probably the drummer”
