White Privilege

There are a few difficulties with discussing white privilege or privilege in general on the internet or almost anywhere:
    • It's far too nuanced for most discussions.  We all are unique and have lower/higher levels of privilege based on race, ability, sexual-orientation, sex, gender, religion...and even things like height, looks, athletic ability, geography of origin, etc.  So there's always the opportunity to say something like "how about Michael Jordan's kids? They grew up millionaires.  Am I really more privileged than they are?"  It becomes all-or-none when in reality there are about a million shades in between.
    • People believe, in fact they fight tooth-and-nail to believe, that they got to where they are through their intelligence and hard work. Telling a lot of people they had or have any privilege ends leads to an almost defensive reaction and digging their heels in more. I'd love to have a dollar for every time I read the phrase "I busted my ass..."  Then I'd truly be able to live a great lifestyle while not working hard at all!
Of course there's white privilege. Using the example of Michael Jordan's kids...yeah, for example, they can go get all the schooling they want and come out debt-free.  They do have some privilege in their economic background.  But all the money in the world can't hide that I'm much safer driving my 2003 Camry around their mansion-dominated neighborhood than they are driving their Ferrari.  Or the way the clothing store clerks ignore me and eyeball them.  This is me, in all my middle-class mediocrity having privilege. Privilege that all the money in the world cannot by.

Me, I'm white. Male. Only child from upper-middle-class family.  I'm dripping in privilege.  Sure some people have some privilege I don't, but the world is generally made for me.  I don't feel particularly guilty about it...but I do acknowledge my fortune.  People in my life tend to be similarly privileged (minus sex/gender in about half the cases).  But we're all different...all unique; snowflakes, if you will.  Some come from less or more money.  All of the males are taller :( and more athletic :(.  There's tons of nuance.  For example, one of my friends from my youth is Korean, adopted as a baby into a white middle-class family.  Generally in the same boat as the rest of us.  But when he opened up about the way his life in his white world impacted him, it was eye-opening...for some of us (some didn't want to hear it and shut down).  He has some privilege, but maybe not as much as I do...the "white" part of the privilege is out for him...and that can be an important one.

One had money for a lawyer and one did not.  Isn't that a result of class structure rather than white privilege?

That's like saying because I live in a house and someone lives in the projects it's white privilege.

The Manafort part, maybe so.  The Browder part?  I'd rather be a white kid wrongfully accused of a petty crime than a black kid accused of a petty crime.

one is the cause of the other, don't you think?

and the fact you live in a house is most likely to privelege, whether it's your own directly or the opportunities you were afforded as a result of the generations before you.

white people born in the suburbs generally don't end up in the projects. but if you're born in the projects, you likely aren't getting out, but if you're white, you have a much better chance.

I grew up too poor to be in the projects. We lived in a slum, lol.

Privilege and white privilege are two separate things in my eyes.

    Beyond white privilege:

Video of white woman calling police on black man in Central Park draws outrage

Woman called 911 after birdwatcher asked her to leash her dog, reigniting storm over everyday racism

When Cooper asked a woman to leash her exuberant dog, she said she would call the police.

“I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life,” she said.

Appalling! She was fired from her job this afternoon and has surrendered her dog to a rescue organization.

This is why I maintain it wasn’t ok to say racist jokes when you didn’t know better and it isn’t ok to pretend micro aggressions are a product of white liberal navel gazing.  Not every racist is David duke , also not every small racist act That you were ignorant of makes you a David Duke. Learn from your mistakes. Racism is a white problem and we need to be doing the most to stop it when we can.  If that means telling your coworkers, boss etc they are assholes and it is not ok to make racist jokes or if it means firing someone from their job , or shaming them from a past they refuse to acknowledge or apologize for that’s what needs to be done.  For fucks sake people need to stop being KKKarens.

I hope that lady with the dog learned from her mistakes but I'm not convinced what she did could be called a mistake.  No, it sounds like it was something she did very intentionally, knowing full well the intended consequences of her words.

White privilege is not existing in China.. not existing in Indonesia..not existing in India... not existing in Saudi-Arabia.. not existing in South-Africa (anymore, thank god but it is turning ugly over there killing white farmers ) ..  not existing in Mexico...  not existing in Argentina.
It is only there where the government majority is white.  Europe is also a white privilege continent.
America has very worrying numbers on this issue..  it is really bad.  And it looks not to get any better but the positive side on all of this is that filming everything might turn the favors.

No she didn’t make a mistake she just plain did something wrong and overtly racist.  She deserves losing her job and everything else she will get. I was speaking generally about whites people and the little things they do that lead to a climate that allows something like this to happen.

“Karen” is definitely dumb, racist and should not have a dog. But..... Holy fuck people are just as bad! Death threats!!?? Really? Might as well send her to the electric chair. Would that make all these “woke” white people happy? Get a fucking grip. This video pissed off more white people than black people. What a joke.

Can I also add that this Karen shit is completely overshadowing the murder of a human being by a cop in the news.

You can be mad about both things at once. And where are you getting your numbers that more white people were pissed off than black people? Like that matters.  That is the kind of comment that to me is used to frame these situations as less serious than they are. The kind of racism that exists in America was created by white people and we (White people) should be doing the most work to end it and we should be pissed when white people are being racist. This situation could have turned into something much worse had Ku Klux Karen called the police and had an officer dispatched.   The point is that it is wrong behavior and needs to be called out continually until it stops. Not oh well more white people were pissed off so it isn’t that big of a deal.  As far as the police murder there is a separate thread for that, but still you can be pissed about both.  And likely due to the strength of the blue wall and police unions those jokers will be back on the Minneapolis PD.  Racism and white privledge is strong in this country.

Nobody said it’s not a big deal. It’s just insane watching mostly crazy white people call for this idiots death. And nobody said you couldn’t be mad at both. Just surprising And sad that this Karen is getting way more attention than the police murder.
