Factory farms are as despicable a wet markets.

There has been a lot of outcry about how horrible China's wet markets are, and rightly so.  But the same concern and outrage could, and should, be targeted at our factory farms.  The abuse to animals is wrong, and the danger to our own health as a result of this gross kind if food production is real.

Thank you Bill Maher for this message:

Every person, with few exceptions, in the western world can go vegan.

And there is no, with few exceptions, reason not to.

    As simple as that.

Don't ban or warn me for stating the obvious. Thank you.

Yes we could.  Or at the very least, stop supporting factory farming.  There are better alternatives.

The video in the attached link above makes a very clear case for why factory farming animals is just plain wrong and unwise on  a number of levels.

I watched the video and it is hard to disagree.  At a minimum get rid of factory farming but the price of meat would be astronomical so it seems like an all or none deal for the general public (or we eat meat only sparingly).  Humans can adapt though.

Good point- I think we do need to adapt and eat less meat/ no factory farmed meat, not only because of cruelty to animals but even just from an economical stand pointy.  Yes, small farmed meat done in ways that are far less cruel is more expensive but cheaply produced meat is causing health problems that are far  more expensive.  The higher cost of eating healthier is at least off set if not financially more sound by lower health costs.

Covid-19 is the perfect example of the extreme price paid for poor food production and poor eating habits.  The number of deaths from these bad habits is greater over all than the number of deaths just from COVID-19,  which is not to lessen the concern for the danger of this disease.  But if we continue producing food by way of factory farming, COVID-19 will not be the only threat of it's kind.  Other diseases will continue to arise- diseases, as Maher points out in the video, for which there are no cures.  We humans are endangering our own species by our poor choices.  The logic of doing otherwise is easy to see.

COVID-19 might not turn out to have anything to do with wet markets. It's an assumption. Not a bad one, but still an assumption.

Factory farming, meanwhile, is definitively known to be breeding apocalyptic superbugs.

You might find this informative and useful:

Also, though is a rather lengthy interview, at one point, Dr. Osterholm talks about a potential pathogen in deer that, if it becomes transmittable to humans sometime in the future, will cause certain painful and horrible death.  He talks about how this pathogen is almost impossible to kill.  It has been known to survive at up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit .

I read that there is so much shit in these factory farms, that some just spray it into the sky.

In that same book, I read Smithfield was the worst, so I have started by not buying their food, and working up from there.

They’re similar for sure. But I think there’s at least some sort of regulations with the factories though. Those wet markets in China look like a free for all.

Probably but to what degree, we really don't know.  Access to farm factories is severely limited.

I eat meat, and I'm not a huge fan of veganism, but the impulse to gloatingly say "animals taste so good, I can't wait to eat some more bloody meat" every time the topic comes up left me when I turned into an adult.
Seriously, it's childish and shows a serious lack of maturity.

Few regulations that have precedence over the obligation to stockholders.

    Upton Sinclair, yes, good point.

But in this case, I would say "better" is not nearly good enough.   It falls far short of even reasonably good.

Some years ago, on a long trip, my wife and I drove past some massive cattle stockyards in southern Kansas- I believe it was between Wichita and Dodge City along US Highway 400.  The stink was overwhelming.  Thousands of cattle all crammed in these huge corralled pens trying to mill around in a thick layer of cow shit with little room to maneuver.  It was disgusting.  This was not very many years ago, not 1943 when The Jungle was written.  I would thing we could have come a lot farther that we have in 77 years.  Sad.

There are alternatives to factory farmed meat, eggs and produce that are much better choices, even for people like us who are below middle income- even us now with no work and no pay checks coming in.   It's doable.

We went Pescatarian/Ovo-Lacto 6 months ago.
Not bothered by the impending meat shortage.
We have a direct pipeline for fresh fish due to my girlfriends son being a spear fisherman in South Florida. So no shortage there.
Hopefully our local farmers market will be able to open in June as planned..
