  • i am so Faithful and thankful to this song...this album which was my first Pj cd (two years ago) and i feel like telling my story:

i would like to start by saying that i am happy with my beleifs and i dont want to change anyones mind if they dont agree with me. all i hope for is acceptance.

this song was one of the first that really hit me and changed my way of thinking about religion. the principles of religion are a beautiful notion, but in my case the basic form of love, tolerance, having faith in people was not present at my childhood church. my family discouraged my curiousity when i came home with questions that they just couldn't answer.
i beleive that religion can be detrimental under the wrong circumstances, as it was in my case. my religion caused me to not care so much about what I can do for people and myself, for me this was harmful. after i stopped praying, attending church and reading the bible i could concentrate on making myself happy as well as helping others. even without religion, the important values can still be maintained. right now, i dont need religion to love the world and every part of it. All i need is Pearl Jam.

this song to me represents the feelings that i have towards religion. children being taught something that has no evidence is real and arent supposed to question, fear is a part of ones relationship with God, we are taught to be afraid of someone who also loves us and looks out for us? people stop listening to their instincts out of fear that they are wrong.
i have probably infuriated a few people by now but this life is short and i'll say what i can when i can.

thank you Pearl Jam for the song Faithful. a burden has been lifted and a life has been changed:)

  • Beautiful song. Nice surprise in Vegas this year.

    M.Y.T.H. is
Belief in the game controls that keeps us in a box of fear
    We never listen
    Voice inside so drowned out
Drowned you are, you are, you are a furry thing
    And everything is you
Me you, you me, it's all related
    What's a boy to do?
Just be darling and I will be too
    Faithful to you
If You Give, You Begin To Live

    But You Might Die Trying
  • I too have listened to it for the past couple of days. For me it's one of those songs you re-visit and have an entirely new apprecaition for. Same with Brain of J...it was just so so for me when it came out but now I totally into it. Yield is so solid...Love it!

  • Such a beautiful song... it reminds me of what I believe - of my family that's like a sanctuary to my heart, of my friends that are just there beside me sharing my beliefs, of all the beautiful things in the world that I want to see, to hear, to taste... in short it reminds me of all the things that make me think when I woke up every day: ''Oooh I wanna live today!!!''

    el oscuro me mantiene
    cuando yo te vi
en la lluvia me prometiste tu sangre

y si me quedo sin alas
    ademas me muero por ti

  • i think This song is about faith.
Each person has faith in something, it keeps us alive and going.
I get the feeling in this song that we're believing in things that we shouldn't believe in, that we are too gullible...
Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse
Of my innocence... got back my inner sense...

I see it as two lyrics, which is why it confuses me. There's big picture, and the picture right before me. That's not the problem. It's that they don't flow one to the other. I'll take a look at the lyrics again, to see where I'm getting lost, but right now it's the last part. I think the music may feature into my discontent. It's not like Alone or Even Flow, eh?

  • Yeah I'm exactly the same, as the first post. I've listened to it everyday this week, it's such a great song. As Matt said on VH1 Storytellers, the way that the lyrical content, by Ed, fits the musical content, just fits so well, hence making a great song.. Faithful is a perfect example lol

How, though? I don't sense/feel/hear it. What is it about the music when separate from the lyrics brings a image similar to what the lyrics represent?

I've heard that "Faithful" is written about a relationship between two ppl that have different religious beliefs, hence the term "a bridge that hasn't not been around nor been stepped on..."

Every time I hear the first two lines of this song I immediately think of the dual meaning of "bridge". The plaque says "certified priest" who thinks of himself as a bridge to God but its interesting they've never met, so how can he bridge his parishioners to their God?
The other meaning for "bridge": No one’s slept here huh? It's interesting that your God has given you this ability to procreate and you've not used it; what a waste, that's rare that you've not used your body for what it has been designed for...or have you? Some religions excuse it and some don't. Some priest’s say they're celibate but take advantage of little boys...it's sick but it makes my point.
The song I believe takes a firm stance against organized religion, even mocking it at times while suggesting that regardless of what your specific faith is, you are faithful to your own belief system as everyone else is and there is no right or wrong belief system. Those that believe "their way or the highway" need to relax before the world implodes.
