I‘m not sure of the reason, but opening with a Release or Long Road whatever is fine if they insist.  But I’ve hated how over the past few years, they’ve often opened with three mellow songs in a row. Just looking at two shows I attended, Pendulum-Wash-Nothingman opened Brooklyn ‘13, and Sometimes-Release-Low Light opened Boston ‘18. I’m not a fan of that. Hopefully that lose that “formula” whenever this tour begins.

lol..same here. I think it might have a lot to do with anticipating the show for so long, then traveling there, then waiting anxiously for the show to start. Excitement is at a peak when they take the stage. I’m always hoping for a Why Go or Last Exit-type song there. SBWM would be my preferred opener from Gigaton.

I actually loved that Boston opener. They nailed Release that night with Sometimes in front of it as a warmup. Brooklyn sounds like a fantastic start to me as well. I do love a fast start too though and I think mixing it up more keeps things fresh and us on our toes of how they are going to come out.

If you look at the 2016 arena tour they got away from this quite a bit with almost all of the shows being a fast start. Europes 2018 Euro tour went back to the formula but instead of a 3 song slow start the majority had a 2 song slow start.

I’d be happy to hear it. Great song and a little bit of change up for the openers would be welcomed.

I noticed that for the 2016 arena tour. So when I went to Boston ‘16 and got Release-Long Road-Small Town-Lowlight-All Those Yesterday to open, I was a little surprised. And it’s nothing against those songs, but to start a rock concert, they’re a little boring. I like when they sprinkle those songs in among the rockers.

That’s awesome. I always felt that, as one-off “Whoa I cant believe they opened with that” song, Jeremy would work well like I bet Alive did.

I love slow openers, Release is magic to open a show. Sad to say after 22 shows I’ve never heard Long Road, but would absolutely love to.

Those two in particular, although they are slow, they still pack a punch. Incredibly emotional songs.

Alright is alright, but to me it doesn’t have near enough oomph to start a show.

I’ve been pretty lucky, pretty diverse bunch of openers

Corduroy, Gimme Some Truth, Intestellar Overdrive, MFC, Go, Why Go, Given To Fly, Oceans, Elderly Woman (x2), Pendulum, Release, Of The Girl, Wash, Long Road (x5)

    One slow opener is perfect.

It definitely grabbed everyone’s attention. You can usually spot the casual fans pretty easily, but there was no way of knowing with that as an opener.

I understand what you're saying about the 3 Slow Burners to star the show. The place is pumped for the show I think most are ready for a Rocker after a Slow Opener?

It’s so funny you mentioned that PJ20 moment because I was there as well and was thinking about it in relation to this discussion. As you’ll attest, that place was about to EXPLODE following Release. Could you imagine if they played Animal right there? Or something in that realm (Hail Hail, etc.) What a botch. It’s funny to look back on and laugh about. And PJ20 was fucking awesome. A true celebration of Pearl Jam. I loved it. But I’d liken playing Arms Aloft in that spot to Michael Jordan airballing the first shot of a playoff game he went onto score 50 points. Strange start. Certainly nothing to dwell on. Doesn’t taint the performance. But the hardcore fans that were there could remember and joke about it.

Nothing against Arms Aloft by the way, which is a fun cover. But not THERE! Lol...I could still hear the crickets.
