"Ed and Pearl Jam"… meaning?

Curious as to the thinking behind signing this message in this way. Is Ed not part of Pearl Jam? Why the need to separate him like this? Not looking to start a flame war here, I'm just genuinely interested in what made them choose this particular signature.

Guessing Ed wrote the letter and signed it on behalf of the band.

I was thinking the same thing on this.  Jim Morrison and The Doors, John Lennon and The Beatles, Robert Plant and Led Zepplin, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, Dave Grohl and The Foo Fighters.
    Why the separation.?.

I infer from the signature that they made the decision mutually but he was the one who wrote the letter.

'Ed on behalf of Pearl Jam'  would have been better but not sure what the big deal is.

It's a way for him to explicitly show fans that he drafted these words on behalf of the band, not management.

Not explicit enough for some fans, apparently.....

It isn't big deal but you knew it would turn into one.   Pearl Jam is a business and they are individuals within that business.

    Because he wrote the letter

Sometimes things are exactly as they appear with no hidden messages.  This is one of those times.  Ed wrote the letter and signed on behalf of himself and the band.

"Ed wrote the letter and signed on behalf of himself and the band." seems legit to me. I honestly hadn't even thought of that when I read it!

I think Stone wrote something similar in a post on PJ.com after Chris's passing...signed it something like "Stone and the band."
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

probably because he wrote the damn thing on a type writer, knew the amount of panic it would cause, and by the time he got to the point to sign off on it, he was so done with it he wrote whatever came to his mind and that is now what we are seeing.
