Ed Martin is heading a DOJ operation called the “Weaponization Working Group.” He has shifted from his past efforts (such as Operation Whirlwind, where he amplified partisan attacks through bots and ghostwritten smear campaigns) into wielding formal government power as both Pardon Attorney and Director of the so-called “Weaponization Working Group.” His corruption is not abstract; it is documented in a pattern of actions that violate ethical norms and erode the rule of law. As interim U.S. Attorney for D.C., Martin signed a motion to dismiss charges against Joseph Padilla, a January 6 defendant he had previously represented in private practice. This was a direct conflict of interest, since DOJ rules explicitly bar prosecutors from handling cases involving former clients. A formal bar complaint was filed against him for this misconduct.

Martin also stacked the deck internally, demoting career prosecutors, eliminating the Capitol riot prosecution unit, and launching internal projects such as “Project 1512” to second-guess obstruction charges used against January 6 rioters. Instead of pursuing justice, he shielded Trump’s allies and worked to rewrite the historical record of an attack on American democracy. His past career shows the same pattern of unethical behavior: he orchestrated ghostwritten online smears against a judge who ruled against him, a playbook of disinformation and intimidation that now carries the weight of DOJ authority.

In his new role, Martin has gone further, openly pledging to “expose and discredit” Trump’s enemies, even those never accused of crimes. That transforms the DOJ into a political hit squad, abandoning due process and presumption of innocence. His abuses extend to harassment of victims: he sent an official letter to attorneys for retired FBI agent William Aldenberg, a Sandy Hook first responder who sued Alex Jones, raising baseless questions about financial benefits. DOJ leadership ultimately rescinded the inquiry, condemning it as harassment of a mass-shooting survivor. Martin has also engaged in intimidation of elected officials, including posting a photo outside New York Attorney General Letitia James’ home after demanding her resignation, an act widely viewed as political intimidation under the guise of official authority.

Currently, the D.C. Office of Disciplinary Counsel has opened an ethics probe into Martin’s conduct. While he claims the investigation is politically motivated, his record shows repeated violations of professional norms and misuse of prosecutorial power. His trajectory is unmistakable from running bot operations and smear campaigns to hijacking the machinery of the Department of Justice. In his hands, pardons and prosecutions are no longer tools of justice, they are weapons of loyalty and retribution.

This is not just corruption; it represents the dismantling of the rule of law itself. Under Martin’s direction, the DOJ is being twisted into a partisan enforcement arm where Trump’s allies are shielded, his enemies are targeted, and the fundamental principles of impartial justice are erased. And while Martin’s behavior is alarming, it is not without precedent in American history. During the McCarthy Era of the 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy and his allies pressured the DOJ and FBI to pursue “subversives” without due process, often targeting political opponents or people in disfavored groups. The weaponization of investigations to silence dissent then mirrors Martin’s efforts today to target Trump’s critics. Likewise, in the 1970s, President Richard Nixon directed the Department of Justice, IRS, and FBI to harass political enemies, journalists, and activists. The parallels to Martin’s pledge to “expose and discredit” Trump’s opponents are striking.

This history proves that while such abuses are nothing new, they should never be accepted as normal. Each time the Department of Justice has been turned into a political weapon, it has corroded democratic institutions and left lasting damage. Martin’s conduct fits into that legacy of corruption, showing once again how fragile the rule of law can become when justice is subordinated to loyalty and retribution.

    * The following opinion is mine and mine alone and does not represent the views of my family, friends, government and/or my past, present or future employer. US Department of State: 1-888-407-4747.

It’s too fucking late. While everyone is distracted by 20 points of blunder, Charlie who? And now the Cat In The Hat Secretary of Defense making a mockery of our armed forces, people like this shit bag are quietly going about their business of turning gubmint into their version of China.

    Good fucking luck.
