Aristotle, writing more than 2,000 years ago, saw clearly and warned that a government whose leaders worked to enrich themselves might still call itself a republic, and might still go through the motions, but when the aim of government shifts from public good to private gain, its constitution becomes an empty shell. The government is no longer for the people.
The demands of avarice gradually corrupt the work of government as officials facilitate the accumulation of personal wealth. Worse, such a government corrupts the people who live under its rule. They learn by experience that they live in a society where the laws are written by the highest bidder. They become less likely to obey those laws, and to participate in the work of democracy — speaking, voting, paying taxes. The United States risks falling into this cynical spiral as Mr. Trump hollows out the institutions of government for personal gain.

That’s not a late-night comedy sketch. That’s what was revealed by an in-depth New York Times expose on how Kash Patel has been transforming the FBI — and not for the better. The Times interviewed 45 former and current FBI employees, and learned of Patel’s trip to Britain for a secret Five Eyes conference, where current and former FBI sources say Patel’s entourage acted less like national security professionals and more like a high-maintenance celebrity travel team.
According to one senior FBI executive, Patel’s detail arrived with “crazy requests” and “special requirements on everything,” while the Brits grew increasingly furious. Patel, we’re told, doesn’t like “meetings in office settings.” So, what did he allegedly want instead? Social events. Premier League matches. Jet skiing. A helicopter ride. Because apparently the director of the FBI — in a world of cyberattacks, terrorism threats, and foreign espionage — needed to be entertained like a bored influencer on a brand-sponsored trip.
And if you think it stops there, buckle up.
The source says the staff obsessed over three priorities: meals, workouts, and entertainment — with the “biggest plan” being how to get Patel’s girlfriend into the trip so she could visit Windsor Castle. One aide was described as an “executive concierge,” barking demands like this was a luxury resort, not a diplomatic mission.
Then came the part that should set off every alarm bell in Washington: the international incident.
British intelligence had repeatedly warned Patel that they urgently wanted a pulled FBI London position restored — a role tied to highly sensitive work. Patel reportedly reassured MI5 Director Ken McCallum that the position would remain, delighting the Brits. Except that he then reversed himself two weeks later and removed her anyway, leaving allies “outraged.”
Promises made, promises broken — with the credibility of the United States dragged behind the motorboat of Patel’s ego.
And for the grand finale? A supposedly private photo at Windsor Castle featuring intelligence officials, some non-disclosed. The Brits explicitly said: don’t share it. Patel, reportedly fixated on social media, wanted to post it anyway. Staff had to fight to stop him — because “He wants a picture out.”
