I'm really starting to feel like DotC sticking out like a sore thumb between SBWM and QE with it having a completely different sound (dead and void of room (or whatever, living/breathing)) to the others.
I’ve always had a sorta similar feeling with Nothingman. I have no time not patience for it between Tremor Christ and Whipping.
    You’re skipping Nothingman?! :o
Yeah. Not that it’s a bad song or anything, but I’ve never been into it.
Blasphemy! I may have to dig out that Immortality thread again... I'm pretty sure we had that argument before
Oh good. So then you already know I love Immortality and am indifferent to Nothingman.
Are you indifferent to Indifference though?

I will say that this album has the best 4 song opening since Self Titled, which had the best 4 song opening since Yield.
I agree the first four songs are really good. The thing that is frustrating is feel like Alright could have been a great song (love the Kid A sounding keys at the beginning) and then Eddie just straight up ruins the song. 7 O’clock is a good song. Then the album dips again til Buckle Up and finishes strong. If they actually made Eddie do something not so Eddie with Alright they would have 10 great songs and a great album. But like Riot Act and Lightning Bolt they bogged down what could have been a tight album with filler and thus diminished the final product. There are some great moments- just wish they were a bit more disciplined in their quality control.
What do you mean with Eddie on Alright?
The song had the potential to be interesting based on the music but in an attempt to use his voice like a warm blanket the song feels like pandering to me. The second he starts singing I have this uncontrollable eye roll. Like we’ve been here before and it wasn’t that great the first time.
What the hell are you talking about? You eye roll when Eddie sings this song? You really thought this and typed it out on a message board? Haha omg.
He did, yeah. He had an opinion about a Pearl Jam song so he expressed it on a forum designed to discuss opinions on Pearl Jam.
Haha, you guys are hilarious. Just be grateful you got new music and stop bitching and complaining about every little thing. Peoples opinions don’t mean anything to me on here, I just scratch my head when I read them and laugh. I just thought it was funny that someone rolled their eyes cause Eddie sounds like a warm blanket and we’ve been here before. You can’t make this shit up, just incredible. Hahaha.
Can’t make up what exactly? ***Someone asked me*** to explain why I thought EV ruined Alright, so I used additional words to explain my reaction. What would you recommend as an alternative? A modern interpretative dance? I’m not tracking what’s so incredible.

(Also, I also used the word pandering, but you seemed to ignore that- I suppose that would have been inconvenient for your exasperation.)

BTW, I have been a fan since the spring of 1992. Never stopped for one day. With that, loyalty doesn’t mean loving everything someone does. It’s ok to tell a person or entity that you know and care about that they can do better and yet continue to love and support them.

Bottom line- they are half a song away from a great 10-song album.
    Just hilarious.

Im just not a self-titled fan.  Still have never connected with it.  So i have Avocado in last place.

Yield is top 3 or 4.  So good.
Yeah, I think my issue with self-titled is the production.  Just too harsh.  I think it's a really solid album ("Big Wave" could be left on the cutting room floor), but I think the production just makes it a challenge for me.I'm personally loving the production on Gigaton.  I enjoyed  O'Brien's production on Backspacer and Lightning Bolt too.  You're in the studio, go ahead and create, explore and try new things.  Production is just a huge component.  Look at the Beatles orginal Let It Be (Phil Spector) versus Let It Be... Naked.  Two really, really different albums, and in that case I'll take "Naked" over the original all damn day.

I don't understand people that are always talking about going for raw and stripped down... that's fine if the songs and the vision are to be raw and stripped down.  I think Gigaton's production is spot on.

Ranking past albums, songs like Future Days would be at the bottom and they deserved that spot for me. With this album the bottom does not mean it's bad just not as good as the rest. Not a dud on this one for me yet.

I dunno. I thought Let It Be...Naked didn't live up to what it could have been. I liked what they were trying to do. But Spector actually did an good job recording the "live" songs for the album (the versions of Two Of Us, I've Got a Feeling, One after 909 are the live versions you see in the Let It Be film). So frankly, I think the original album is fine if you replace Across the Universe with the Wildlife version (or even the Anthology 2 version), and Long and Winding Road with the version from the film (which I think might be the version they use on "Naked"). For my personal version of the album, I replace the two versions (Universe, Winding Road) I mentioned, as well as the song Let It Be  (I prefer the single version to the album version). And for me, that's a perfect album. The "Naked" version sort of neuters the rooftop songs. One After 909 for example is way better on the original than Naked...to me.

Have given about 6 or 7 full listens of the album straight through from start to finish so I feel like I can rank now...
Tier 1 (these are songs I believe to be superb and would put them up there with other great Pearl Jam songs across their entire catalog):
    1. DOTC
    2. Quick Escape
    3. Comes Then Goes
Tier 2 (these are songs I think are REALLY good and won't ever be skipping whenever they come on album playing or shuffle):
    4. Who Ever Said
    5. River Cross
    6. Take the Long Way
    7. Alright
    8. Retrograde
Tier 3 (these songs I find to be really solid, but could find myself possibly skipping if not in the right mood):
    9. SBWM
    10. Seven O'Clock
Tier 4 (these songs are average and feel like I'm most tempted to skip...but wouldn't consider "bad"):
    11. Buckle Up
    12. Never Destination

I mean I think to even feel like there's 8 songs in "Tier 1" and "Tier 2" is a sign of a really strong album to me. There's 8 songs that I think are really good or great that I would put on any PJ album and believe it holds weight. The other 4 songs might not be my "favorite" and ones I'll repeat a lot I don't think...but they aren't "bad" to me by any means. I don't think there's a bad song on this album really.
It's too soon for me to really rank this album because I think some time needs to pass before you can compare it to other PJ albums. But I'll give this one a solid 8 or 8.25 out of 10. It's really really good and I keep wanting to listen to it...so that's the best sign really.
Can't wait to hear this stuff live!!!!

I like how you broke down in tiers and explained your reasons. Excellent, and enjoyed reading.
Thanks!! Glad it's not just me speaking into the void completely  =)
