Wow on my first listen as I just got the CD in the mail in Naperville...Not even through Who Ever Said and it's just awesome in every way...btw Ole says hello for worst song ever and honestly Can't Deny Me was pretty cringe-worthy also...this new album and the 7 years it took was well worth all the reasons it took this long cause the last 2 albums simply are very average! I wasn't sure they had it in them but, it's pretty amazing that 30 years in they still had another brilliant piece of art in them.

Everyone hears songs differently but, I definitely agree that because most everyone has 3 tiers of different songs solidifies the point that we have been given a great album! Just getting to River Cross and I hear no filler and honestly not a single song I will be skipping. After 1 listen of BS and LB I knew there was 3-4 songs on both albums that I never had to hear again. Big shout out to Josh Evans the album sounds amazing! I will be happy to slot this gem in at #6 behind the first 5 which, to me in whatever order can never be anything but the first 5. Now let's get this damn virus extinct and get the boys back on the road playing these songs live. Stay safe everyone.

One last thought and I really hate doing this and it actually bothers me when everyone says they hear Zeppelin here and Rage there and on and on and on but, jesus does Eddie sound like Peter Gabriel on River Cross? Especially when he's crooning 'Can't hold me down' I love it anyways!!

Is you don't like Comes Then Goes, you may be dead inside. Damn that is a beautiful song. It's In to the Wild era Eddie sounding music. Love the guitar and his vocals.

On first listen, I like the first four songs and the last four songs a lot. They are experimental and keep the listener on their toes but not alienating at all. Production is well done- songs flow perfectly from one to the next through the whole album. The middle songs feel to me a little like dad rock /lighting bolt esque. Predictable and rely too heavily on uninteresting power chords and vocal ticks/tricks that have become cliche for EV. Maybe the middle songs will grow on me w/future listens. But I’ll take 8 new cool PJ songs any day! Night night.

Very original album. Never heard production on a PJ album like this. Literally sounds like them live and it's amazing.

Have to say also Who Ever Said didn’t go the way I anticipated it to. Probably the best album opener since Can’t Keep.

After 2 listens:

Tier 1: SBWM, DotC, Quick Escape, 7 O’clock, long way, who ever said, river cross, retrograde
Tier 2: Alright, Buckle Up, Comes Then Goes
Tier 3: Never Destination (that chorus just sounds to me like an alt-country rock song; the rest of it is cool, though)

Instant Reaction Thoughts...

- Stephen Hyden's review was the most accurate IMO.
- Album Opener/Closer pairing is up there with the all time great PJ pairings
- DOTC was a great outlier single pick, and the lyrics resonate even more now
- The videos are a really cool art exploration and it was a fun way to get introduced to the album, but I can't wait to listen to it straight up ASAP

That’s an amazing song. The lyrics are deep and heartbreaking too if you listen to what he’s revealing.
