The general media almost always gets science reporting wrong. You can't capture the nuances of the information in headlines and 30 second soundbites.
This is so true. Just got out of a campus wide Zoom meeting where we had state health officials present to answer questions and I was amazed at the lack of knowledge people had or just plain misinformation they "heard". People just run with shit they don't even know is true. It's baffling to me.
    It's a hopeless situation...

my daughter this morning told me one of her high school teachers told the class we'd be facing covid-related restrictions until 2023. I told her her teacher is full of shit and she got mad at me. LOL

seriously, what kind of teacher tells already-stressed-the-fuck-out students something like that? FFS.

To be fair it is the same outlet bbc news. Its pretty much all we have on TV here

Yes, but the news reporters have less than a minute to give updates on even the most important stories, and they seize on the most alarming and/or salacious bits of those to keep the viewers' attention.

I personally don't really see the value in watching any news. Much better to read legitimate material than try to sift out the facts from the fluff.

i'd have to agree there. i stopped watching the news years ago. it's basically a (slightly expanded) video version of a headline.

  • In the UK we don't have many news outlets on TV. Only a couple i can think of. Because  I don't use the Internet  much. Only to come  here really . So I'm up at 4 am with the young one and bbc news is on for hours before normal tv starts.  Its all very repetitive

Its funny, kids often believe what teachers told them first. As a chemistry teacher I get all kids of questions that kids learned years ago, and they usually believe their 5th grade gen ed teacher over a science teacher. Things like they were told their blood looks blue in their arm because it doesn't have oxygen in it and when I tell them otherwise its "no, but my 5th grade teacher said this, she's right." Well, good luck at life if your blood doesn't have oxygen in it.

i used to believe everything my mom told me because she was a nurse 20 years prior. to this day my friends still make fun of me starting a sentence with "well, my mom was a nurse, and she said....". LOL

“I must tell you this afternoon that we’ve been informed today that, in addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant – the variant that was first identified in London and the South East – may be associated with a higher degree of mortality,” Johnson said.

Researchers are still looking at the data and there is still a lot of uncertainty.

Patrick Vallance, the UK government's chief scientific adviser, said it looks like the variant is more deadly when looking at the total population that becomes infected.

"If you took somebody in their 60s — a man in their 60s — the average risk is that for 1,000 people who got infected, roughly 10 would be expected to, unfortunately, die with the virus. With the new variant, for 1,000 people infected, roughly 13 or 14 people might be expected to die," he said.

Vallance said the increase in risk would affect all age groups.

This evidence comes from several groups in the UK that found an increased risk of death for people infected with the variant compared to people infected with other forms of the coronavirus. In four analyses cited by a government advisory group, these estimates ranged between roughly 1.3 and 1.9 times higher risk of death. At least one analysis among hospitalized patients did not.

  • I just posted this in a response to delusions a lot of fans have about a PJ tour this year in another forum. I've become a Covid geek over the past year, always seeking out scientific data and articles. The below article speaks to the importance of vaccines and the likely future state of Covid. At some point people have to understand immunity is the ONLY way out. You can either take a vaccine and get a mild or asymptomatic version of Covid or you can get infected with the real deal. There's only TWO options here, there is no 3rd option where this thing disappears or a 4th where you just get lucky and never get infected. Maybe that message needs to be sold in a more harsh manner. This thing could be defeated to the point where it is literally another common cold in a year or two. The future is in our hands. Keep doing what a lot have been, taking short cuts, acting selfishly, denying, and this pandemic is more than capable of raging for a solid 3 or 4 years. At which point society will literally be in ruins. I'd rather stick a needle in my arm twice but to each his own.

With the Europe Pzifer delays, BC is looking at which populations (like elderly) Moderna might be used for the 2nd vaccine for original Pzifer primer if delayed still at day 42 (if it comes to that). For younger, with healthier immune response, it might be better to wait.

Not sure how old you are, but the vaccine is probably
more deadly to you than the virus.  Do a little
more research before getting that shot.
