I would say that Jack is my favorite, just because I really dig his style. Dave A was super intense. I really like Matt Cameron, but I don't think his style quite fits the band right.

Dave Abruzesse best drummer for sure. Most dynamic and technical of them all. Matts good but just looks too stiff sometimes. The way Dave does his runs on the high hat during the Evenflow on RVM(Best of...). And I'm pretty sure it was Dave A. playing on Last Exit. Does not sound like J.I. style.
Everyone should check out Godsmack's "Changes" DVD to see an amazing drummer Shannon Larkin....Holy Fuck!!! :D

Was just listening to No Code this morning, he sounds amazing on Present Tense, Who You Are, In My Tree.

    Not forgetting Habit.

    Yield too.

Given To Fly, as much as I love Matt, Jack owns that one.

Favourite drummer - the mighty Jack Irons
    Reason - polyrhythms

Easily the most inventive and innovative person to sit on that stool. Made Pearl Jam sound like a band reinvented, reborn and renewed on No Code. Invested their music with a sense of sublety and complexity it didn't have before and has found it hard to maintain since. His lyrics still suck, though...

Jack Irons because he was the drummer for No Code and Yield.
He added unique sound to the band.

  • Matt Cameron is the best drummer in the world ever!
He can play the simplest rhythm but make it sound fantastic, his fills amaze me and his ability to keep everything together is brillant, yet he can play songs so complex and so different you never know what to expect from him. I love his drumming from soundgarden more than his drumming in pj only because he simplifies his drumming for pj (no jesus christ pose here lol) not because the music is simple but because it doesnt need wild crazy beats to accent the music it just fits it perfectly. And i also love how he can play all of pjs catalog brilliantly and he adds his own spin to it too.

    Yep! Exactly what you said.:)

Matt cameron is the best sticksman period.

Dave Abbrruzzezze or whatever is a brilliant technichian, but plays the same
f****** fills all the time like a robot, keep time like clock though......which is not the case with mr Irons, wonderful feeling though, and the tracks he laid down for those albums have great drumwork, but he couldn't really cut it live I think, Dave krusen did an ok job on ten, more than that I don't know...

My farvourite drummer is Matt Cameron. He plays every song different every time the song is played live and not like Dave A. who played every goddamn song the same(but he is good). Matt playing the songs different makes it really interesting to see the guys live and hear the bootlegs because of the varaity in the songs.
    Cheers for Matt!!
  • i think matt is perfect for the band now, but jack irons had such a unique sound/ way of playing, he made yield/no code in my opinion

matt cameron is NOT stiff, if anyone is stiff its jack irons.

anyway PJ's best drummer is easily matt cameron, especially early on in 98-00. his drumming at that period was intense. he is easily PJ's msot creative drummer on stage, he is always changing up his fills. In 2000 his playing was different nearly every night. i love how he also skips beats or does off beat fills, and how he would do double kicks on the bass before he would hit the crash. in some slower songs like immortality or smile you can hear him throw in some off beat bass drum kicks, which is totally awesome. not to mention how hard he hits and how fun it is to watch him play. i also love the way he plays immortality, for a song that is that slow and calm, yu dont expect some great drumming, but he fucking plays that song great, especially the ending jam. matt cameron sort of reminds me of john bonham. oh and i also forgert, his ayotte drumset from 2000 sounded amazing, he shouldve kept that set instead of his yamaha.

did i mention matt cameron is my favorite drummer period? and dave a blows? yea dave a can keep all of his stupid ass splashes and chinas. dave a was just a repititive prog rock player that accent every single damn guitar note with a different cymbal. the only thing i liked about him was his fast foot at times and his snare sound.

jack irons, well hes just unique, and you cant call him out.

edit: oh and lets not forget how multi talented matt is. he wrote guitar parts for: evacuation(ok so that song isnt that great), you are, in the moonlight and unemployable, and probably one or two other songs im forgetting. he is also in the band wellwater conspiracy, where he is the main song write and lead singer, and matt is a pretty good singer. matt cameron is simply amazing.

  • Matt then Jack then Dave

Jack was a great fit for the band in the middle stage of their career. Both Daves were good at the beginning, pretty flashy, Jack was awesome for mellowing them out and the became a great diverse rock band.

I am just biased with Matt C because I think he is such an incredible musician. I'll never forget when I showed up for a show on the 1998 tour and he was playing drums and my jaw dropped, "Holy shit. That's Matt Cameron playing with my favorite band. This is the greatest day of my life."

Well put ! dave a always did that, and I'm not to fond of his snare either...
he totally ruins the unplugged show at some points with his insensetive playing..I guess he gets in the mood of things, but hey...calm down a bit.

matt is the greatest ever, he's really become my favorite drummer all over, I bet you can place him in any band and he'd pull it off for shure!

I like all three, always jack most

but when it comes to pure raw energy in a live show it is Dave hands down. I just listened to 3 94 shows last night, and the intensity in everyone seems to been way higher, that in tensity has been gone since Dave left.

not a knock on any of them they all bring total awesomeness to the table, but the version of Not For You from Chicago 94 is as good as it gets, and Dave drives that bitch hard.

Matt. I think he adds all the right touches. Sometimes I like the more aggressive drumming of Abruzzese - he was the right drummer for the time I'd say, and Irons is very close to Matt - he was fucking incredible no doubt about it. But you listen to Corduroy and Even Flow with Matt playing and it's unreal. Plus, I think Avocado has the best drumming of any Pearl Jam album - it's perfect.

thanx man, but i actually like his snare sound. however, i do agree with you with his playing on unplugged. the first time i listened to alive unplugged i was just like "can you shut up dave" (with his playing of course hehe)

of course, i have to say that I like them all, but my favorite is Jack.

I love his power and his style, the sound of his kit always fit in perfect with the way the band was playing at the time. I think Yield and No Code sound so wonderful because they we're recorded with Irons, so now we originally knwo all those songs with Jack's drums, but seriously in my opinion I tihnk every drummer PJ has had has been there for the right reasons and at the right time. Matt is doing a great job and he is an excellent drummer, especially his Soundgarden stuff. I tihnk Binaural really shows off Matt's intesity and seriousness

  • Dave A was just like PJ at the beginning of the band's life - he was aggressive and raw. If he'd stayed with the band we may have seen him develop and learn how to play with a more subtle touch at times. But i've never heard anything subtle from Dave's time with PJ. How many times do you need to hit the cymbals during a song? I mean, c'mon!

Jack Irons sounds great on the albums, but live he was missing something. He brought a straight-to-the-point kind of sound to many of the older songs, so it didn't sound like the songs were evolving in any way.

Matt Cameron is the perfect PJ drummer. He can really whack the drums, but he can tone it down too and sound really beautiful. Simply put, he's a bad motherf*cker! I've never heard better drumming than during the Even Flow drum solo which he started doing in 2006. The part where he finishes the solo and starts doing that other drumming as Stone comes back in the riff....it floors me!

    So, i'm going with Matt!
