Do you mean Soundgarden was a band based around Matt?

Anyway i agree as i have said somewhere else on this board, PJ lost out bigtime when Jack called it quits. You know Matt is good but i think he tries to do too much, particularly live. Sometimes he bashes too much, Jack really fitted the pace of the band. I hope he comes back some day....

Yeah, probably Jack Irons. No Code and Yield are two of my top three albums, I just love his style and what it added to both of those.

Dave Abbruzzese is my favorite. You say he has a bad character. I don't know about that and I don't really care. He was just fucking awesome. The drumming on Last Exit drives my brother insane cause he thinks it's so annoying, but I absolutely love it.

Matt Cameron is the best drummer in the world ever!
He can play the simplest rhythm but make it sound fantastic, his fills amaze me and his ability to keep everything together is brillant, yet he can play songs so complex and so different you never know what to expect from him. I love his drumming from soundgarden more than his drumming in pj only because he simplifies his drumming for pj (no jesus christ pose here lol) not because the music is simple but because it doesnt need wild crazy beats to accent the music it just fits it perfectly. And i also love how he can play all of pjs catalog brilliantly and he adds his own spin to it too.

    I love all PJ drummers.

I thought what Dave (Krusen) did first on Ten was good, but when I saw Abruzzessee on PJ MTV Unplugged...I was like "wow".

    Dynamics, great feel, great punches/sound.

    Not the tightest drummer, though.

Of course Jack is classic. Very tight, unique sound. What he did on Yield/No Code was is awesome.

    And of course, Matt....drumming legend.

Dave, and not just because we share a name... i think he has a great feel for the music, and is really fun to listen to, plus he has a groovy sort of sound which works really well with the PJ sound at the time. with that being said, Jack's "chapter" is my favorite musically, and Matt is solid as well...

Come to think of it, isn't it strange they always had such bad ass drummers? I mean there's not one that really stands out as being a less good drummer than the others. They're all are very different too. I think the rest of the band are very lucky to have such talent among them at all times. Something Eddie never forgets to mention now a days about matt. :)

there are some things.... one thing.. i realllllly love about Dave A.. his cymbol work on quiet parts... daughter breakdown.. RITFW 3rd verse.. etc etc etc.. stunning.

Matt and Jack are 2 of the best drummers in history though.

Jack brought an aura to the band which was just amazing. Matt brings his own thing as well (which is great) but the vibe Jack had going was unique.

Matt Cameron. I love the way he writes. His songs are great. Especially You Are. Jack Irons was awesome too. Very close second.

Hmmmm tough one.... Jack probably. Technicaly I think Dave took it though that guy really had some amazing foot and cymbal work. Matt is an amazing all round musician with nice song writing skills but yeah Jack just sorta had something a little special (In My Tree)

  • Dave Abbruzzese is mine, he brought pure energy and a unique sound. not to mention it looked like he was having the most fun, and i love his style.
  • I hated Matt Cameron when he first joined the band. He played really excessive drum fills. And I never got to see them live on that tour. However when I got some 2003 stuff his playing had really really improved. He learned how to groove. So I'd say he's my favorite drummer of theirs now because he is the one that will be with them when I see them live.
  • Matt looks like he's having a great time. I've never seen another drummer look so fulfilled when going into a fill. He's quite the rockstar.

Jimmy Shoaf is a drum tech....but is credited with one song-for what it's worth.

"Everyone knows PJ's had a million drummers who all seemed to be named Dave or Matt. Ok, maybe not a million, and maybe not all Daves and Matts (hello Jack Irons). But you get the idea. People who've drummed on Pearl Jam records include Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese, Jimmy Shoaf, Jack Irons and Matt Cameron. Wait a minute. Jimmy Shoaf?!?

It's a basic fact that Dave Abbruzzese was Pearl Jam's drummer when they recorded Vitalogy in late 1993 and early 1994. And ok sure, that's Jack Irons drumming on "Stupid Mop," it's written right in the album's credits. Who, then, is the mysterious guy who drums on "Satan's Bed"? The "Satan's Bed" page of the liner notes only say "Jimmy, drums." And a recent discussion on the Red Mosquito board inspired a spirited debate. One Red Mosquito board member wrote us about it, so we did our best sleuthing and the answer is...

The mysterious "Jimmy" is one Mr. Jimmy Shoaf, Dave Abbruzzese's drum tech at the time. TwoFeetThick asked Jimmy Shoaf for the lowdown. "Yes, that was me on Satan's Bed," Shoaf said. "It was the last day of sessions at Bad Animals in Seattle and Dave Abbruzzese was getting his tonsils taken out. I was supposed to be packing up the drums when Stone, Eddie and the recording engineer could not get a drum machine to work and called me in the control room to look at it. I got it going and it was a simple beat and Stone said get behind the kit and play that beat so I did. I did not hear any vocals or bass until the album came out and actually didn't think it would make it to the record. I thought they were just getting ideas down to tape." But Jimmy adds that the drum machine may have also gotten some air time on the track; he's "not sure if it's all me or me and a drum machine."

Eddie Vedder told some of the story himself way back in 1994, onstage in New York at the Paramount Theatre on April 17. "When were in Seattle, we recorded a bunch of new songs. This one was [on] the last day we were in the studio. Dave was getting his tonsils out or something. And me and Stone, we wrote this song. The drum tech was actually playing the drums on it. Anyways, this guy named Adam who's here tonight, we stayed up 'til like four finishing it. Adam, wherever you are, we're gonna play this song."

At first glance, it may seem like Eddie is equating "Adam" to "drum tech." But read carefully and it's clear that they are separate mentions: a drum tech and someone named Adam were both involved in the session. Who is Adam? Jimmy Shoaf gave us a clue: "the recording engineer could not get a drum machine to work and called me in the control room to look at it," Shoaf said. One look at the Vitalogy liner notes and there's "Adam Kasper, Assistant Engineer." Name sound familiar? That's because not only did he assist with the engineering of Vs. and Vitalogy, he produced Riot Act. Adam Kasper has also produced Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, and Queens of the Stone Age.

Though Shoaf didn't get a formal album credit, the tally of drummers on Pearl Jam albums now stands at six: two Daves (Krusen, Abbruzzese), two Matts (Chamberlain, Cameron), a Jack (Irons), and for one song, a Jimmy."
  • I love the "Matt Cam" feature on the DVDs, it's a unique perspective. My favorite is still Jack Irons, his work on Yield is amazing.

No, Last Exit was Dave. All of Vitalogy was Dave except Stupid Mop and Satan's Bed. With that said, Dave is my favorite PJ drummer because he brought so much energy to all their songs (Animal, WMA, Last Exit, live version of Once come to mind) and although he embellished a lot, he never sounded muddy or convoluted. He also used china cymbals, and I love how they sound (oooohh Immortality). From what I've heard, his dismissal was probably best for the band, but he could really pound those skins.

Matt is my 2nd favorite, he can definitely lay down a strong groove, and he is a master with the toms. He used the ride too much though. There are only a few songs that I think Jack played better than Matt does (Hail Hail is one, for sure). And I dont like the sound of Jack's fills at all.

Matt Chamberlin. His work in the "Alive" video was absolutely amazing.

After him, it's either Dave A. or Jack.
  • Dave Abbruzzese - brings so much energy and vitality to all the songs he played on, i still listen to the early Pearl Jam stuff he played on, with awe :D
    also, a powerhouse visually :D

second fav. Matt Cameron, versatile and enigmatic

damn, I dont think I've ever seen a thread about pearl jams drummer. but I would say matt, he's the longest tenured drummer. 7 years now.

krusen is great of course...but i have to say that Abbruzzese is my favourite. He's got a fantastic groove. I also love Iron's work on No Code.
    About Matt:
He's the one i like the least...I love the way he plays but i think it doesn't quite fit PJ. On Live on two legs this is very obvious (he was new in the band i know but still). He's technic is so flawless that he almost sounds like a computer drum kit (almost), as far as tempo is concerned, and when he does variations they are too complicated and it tends to overshadow the rest of the instruments. I didn't feel this in Soundgarden (which i like very much) and i was quite surprised when i heard it on live on two legs.
On the other hand Abbruzzese slightly comes off tempo sometimes but that gives the songs a lot more live and groove or swing (i don't know if its the right words in english to discribe what i feel).
  • david abberuzze (spelled it wrong probably).

most energy and passion. versus and vitalogy are also my favorite pearl jam albums, so maybe he just got the best material to work with.
