GREAT band lost it's way

I am the only one?
Who remembers a band that stood for something?
Not only was the music THE BEST, but the ideals matched
Did I spend $500 for 4 tickets to 2 shows & will I also spend a couple thousand dollars to travel & stay in Europe to see them...YES
But must I also pay $40 for a fucking T-shirt?!
They used to care, & that REALLY meant something to me
& as WILDLY STOKED as I am to see them & hoping for greatness...I'd be lying if I didn't say they've turned into everything else....oh, except for still making records? Signed one of your VERY biggest fans

You think they lost their way because the economics of the industry have changed and they charge $40 for a t-shirt? That you don’t HAVE to buy?

Spends thousands to see them in Europe but complains about a $40 shirt.  Makes perfect sense.

40 dollars for a shirt does suck. But a crunchy taco at Taco Bell is like 1.59 now. When I was a teenager they were .39. You could buy a ten pack for 4 bucks. That was the 90’s when this band you speak of stood for something. Everything is expensive anymore. Maybe they should be more like the Eagles or the Stones and charge a minimum of 250 per ticket for the worst seats. Inflation sucks. Pearl Jam does not.
    Peace,Love and Pearl Jam.

That was what I was thinking. Now if you also required a T-Shirt purchase with ticket in order to get in that would be something else.

Also I see this as the future of all concerts in the next 5-10 years.

Ticket + Merch + VIP package = getting into the venue. That said everything has changed so much in the music industry , tour and merch is how the money is made not records and sales of said records.

I guess I don’t understand what ideals changed over 30 years. To me they are still the same band, it’s just the world is different and they interact with it differently.

This thread has potential for greatness.  None of the pricing of Pearl Jam stuff bothers me except for the cost of the shirts.   I will agree with the original poster on that point.   I don't buy shirts anymore.

  • Welcome to the forums. Post 1, lesson 1. :time_out:

I don't buy the shorts because the material usually isn't the most comfortable and the sizing doesn't seem to fit standard sizes. Generally, they are uncomfortable AF to me.

I like shirts. I but them more often now than I do posters. They aren't the highest quality but luckily my Seattle 2018 shirt has held up through repeated washings.

Did you not get the email with free shirt coupon for buying 4 tickets? Maybe it went to your spam.

Not sure I'm proud to admit this or not, but I'm still wearing (not regularly, mind you) my salmon colored No Code shirt from the Augusta show in 1996.  Did they  just make them better back then?

    40 for a shirt ain't bad.  I paid 80 for a long sleeve at a Tool show in 2019.

I’ll skip the obligatory bashing of someone who’s disappointed with the band. I could sort of agree. The non communication, no music, forthcoming albums, constant merch , singles magazine delays. It’s all frustrating and doesn’t fit the mold of a supposed fan friendly band. Fortunately I have better things to worry about and keep me busy.

As has been said many many times before angry Eddie and angry Pearl Jam don't  exist anymore.
    So no more...
Anger at big business (see private corporate shows)
No more anger at TM (see most American shows ticketed through TM)
    No more "low priced" tickets
    No more mosh pits
    No more "cheap" merch
    Etc..

Now get off my lawn I need to take my Metamucil

It's ok to be frustrated. We all want more and want it now. But takez like "Who remembers a band that stood for something?" will never not be lame.
