  • Listened to him for the first time yesterday and today. Played his new album twice and thought it was great. This is my first or second experience with bluegrass, not into it, but the song writing is fantastic. He’s coming to Denver and I’m going to do at least one of the shows.

My daughter is flying out to see him there plus her boyfriend lives there! Yeah I’ve listened to it twice and it’s a great album I know it’s bluegrass but it’s just different from any other bluegrass I’ve ever listened too

I hope he doesn't add a drummer. For me bluegrass and string band music sounds better with out drums. When groups like the Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show added drummers it completely changed their sound and I lost interest in their music.
  • A friend told me that usually the first night is more rock, second night is experimental, and third night is bluegrass. Any truth to this?

The shows I've been to were just single dates. Everything is played with normal bluegrass string instruments. He does some rock song covers but they have bluegrass arrangements. Most of the experimental jam songs he did when I saw him were mostly original songs. The only time I've seen him play an electric guitar was at the Nashville Tool show when he came out and played with Adam Jones.

For NYE 2023, first night was hardcore bluegrass (which I'm SO gutted I missed), second night was experimental - and a wonderful night for shrooms, I must say - and NYE was just a nice blend of the two. In terms of drummers - I'd bet money that a drum set never becomes a fixture in his band; he would lose the vast majority of his bluegrass-loving fans immediately (very much a no-no in the genre). I did attend his Halloween show in 2023 (my first ever show), and they had a drummer, and he mostly played his electric guitar - it was a fun show, but it definitely left me wanting a true BS bluegrass show.

Had a blast. I knew maybe 4-5 songs but danced my ass off. I think he’s one of the top 3 guitarists I’ve ever seen, and he has a hell of a voice. Loved the crowd. Billy is absolutely filthy on the guitar. His band is clean and flawless. They closed off the uppers for tonight (they were open the past two nights), and it was really intimate and cool with a packed out lower bowl.
