  • According to Freud, we are born with our Id. The id is an important part of our personality because as newborns, it allows us to get our basic needs met. Freud believed that the id is based on our pleasure principle. In other words, the id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation. When a child is hungry, the id wants food, and therefore the child cries. When the child needs to be changed, the id cries. When the child is uncomfortable, in pain, too hot, too cold, or just wants attention, the id speaks up until his or her needs are met.

The id doesn't care about reality, about the needs of anyone else, only its own satisfaction. If you think about it, babies are not real considerate of their parents' wishes. They have no care for time, whether their parents are sleeping, relaxing, eating dinner, or bathing. When the id wants something, nothing else is important.

i think it was '94. it was on merckinball.

Merkinball came out in 1995 as the B-side to accompany Neil Young's "Mirrorball" The single I got Id/shit I believe first surfaced radio airwaves in November 1995. I first heard the song over Thanksgiving break and fell in love with it instantly, as most of us do when it comes to Pearl jam songs.

    yeah... what (s)he said.
Merkinball is also where you can get a studio version of Long Road, another great colaboration track w/ Uncle Neil Young.

...and it's "I Got Id". Thats the name on Merkinball... it's the only track that gets 2 variations of names for some reason I do not know...

    But it makes me sad.

I have loved this song since the first time I heard id ( i heard the live at melbourne park version from '98 and I have to say I like this version better than the merkinball version) amazing
  • This song is shear perfection...
And hey, how bout some love for Neil's blistering guitar work in that song!!! Mindblowing.
  • This song is amazing, definitely one of my favorite PJ songs,I just love the feel of the song and the lyrics really move me,along with the vocals,a really great piece of music that will never get old.
  • it's very good. I'd like to hear the album version, I just heard a live version.

    I got I.D...i know who I am---or do I?

i Got Id...In Freudian theory, the division of the psyche that is totally unconscious and serves as the source of instinctual impulses and demands for immediate satisfaction of primitive needs...whether we need em or not, or to learn the hard way from finding we dont

I got Shit...in the long run, the obvious stands to be true, huh?

incidentally my friend steve(who left this mortal coil for further celestial pursuits)'s favorite tune

I was listening to this song a few weeks ago and it all of a sudden hit me what the song was about and how much it applies to my life at the moment.
It's in my top 5 PJ songs at the moment and it looks like it will be staying n there for a while
  • this song always reminds me of driving to sandpoint back from moscow, idaho. my gf of the time broke up with me and i used to go to moscow to get away from it all.

that being said, its one of pj's best.

You can have it on vinyl by buying Rearviewmirror: Greatest Hits, it shouldn't cost too much money. I think it is still in print. I just paid $35 for a used copy of Yield. Rearviewmirror will be less than that.
