leatherman is about a homeless man who wore a homemade leather suit and traveled around getting food from everyone. her was never late. :)

thats a real meaning by the way. fascinating story actually. apparently ed may be related to this guy.. look it up, he wandered around new york state somewhere abouts :)

For a while I couldn't figure out what "Fatal" was about, but I just came up with an interpretation of that.

I also agree with "Pilate", i've never really figured that one out.

Yellow Ledbetter. In the Lost Dogs book McCready confesses that he doesn't know what the song means and he doesn't care.

I can´t understand what it`s about.I understand the words, but not what they mean all together!
"The smallest oceans still get big,big waves"
  • I think Off He Goes has a deeper meaning than what it appears on the surface...But I may just have been listening to too much Libertines and Las lately...

  • For me that would be garden. It's a very powerfull song and I especially like this part:
    "i don't question, our existence
i just question, our modern needs "
But I haven't got a clue what the song is about. Maybe I will someday...

  • Yellow Ledbetter! I love this song but I haven't got the slightest idea what it means. Can anybody please help me and Mr. Mike McCready.
Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
    Deliver me from reasons why
You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly
  • I always imagine YL to be along the idea of reading between the lines and accepting the truth of war, but that's a personal interpretation.

I love garden. The only bad thing about it in my opinion are those lines. I feel the song so much, without litteraly understanding the lyrics, but since I do question our existence a lot, that part ruines the song for me a bit. I would eddie to sing:

    "I do question, our existence
and I question, our modern needs."

oh well, can't have it all now can you. :)
  • probably All or None

and I think you people are thinking to specific about song meanings.

for example: In My Tree isn't about anything specific, in my mind (or if it is, it's is just an extended metaphor, an example; ) I think it is simply about alienation, putting yourself above in every sense.

I like the words, they sound good together, but I've never really connected them to anything specific or worked out a meaning or anything (if there is one).

its about a girl (or boy) who's been opressed by her parents and needs freedom and is resilient over the pain of it all and knows it'll be better soon and makes it happen: "she holds the hand that holds her hand, she will rise above"
maybe i'm just stupid but....I am mine?? im a pretty slow person, but i just never you understood it or even thought about it much at that.

    I am mine
its about as humans we are our own....our time here is up to us, what we do is our choice..."i know i was born and i know that i'll die..the in between is mine" perhaps it also is a statement about religion too, but me being religious, i dont like to think about that as much as the first one.

i think porch is just about a girl that left him without saying bye and him wanting to tell her some stuff first

i definitely have to go with lukin on this one. The song is awesome, but i have no idea what's going on except for, "i'm going to lukins, lock the door to lukins, opened the fridge, and ....."

Matt Lukin was the bassist (I think) for Mudhoney. The song is basically about how people won't leave Ed alone and he goes to Lukin's to relax (I'm going to Lukin's, I got a spot at Lukin's, Knock the door at Lukins, open the fridge, now I know life is worth.)

I always thought Yellow Ledbetter had no meaning. They were just jamming and Ed made the lyrics up on the spot and some of them are just incoherant mumblings. That's why the live versions are always different. There are no official lyrics.

I would say Pilate is the big one that I can't even come close to figuring out. Did Pilate actually have a dog? Is he refering to Jesus?
  • Yellow ledbetter(what a surprise), State of Love & TRust (is it about suicide?-anyway still most of the lines dont make sence) and Breath(ok, I get the part, go out, reach the door but "a breath and a SCREAM"??
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."
"I may be drunk but at least I'm not insane."
    "I don't have a drinking problem 'Cept when I can't get a drink."
"There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk"
    -Tom Waits
  • In "Breath" the breath and scream part I think is when the elder says go out and live!! See the world! It means don't be scared go take a deep breath and LIVE (scream).

WTF does the title Yellow Ledbetter mean? Was Huddie Ledbetter a total fucking coward or something???? I can almost get some of the lyrics, but the title...
