    The building blocks of empathy.

    I’m obsessed with the idea of ‘cathedral thinking’- that concept of building something so vast, so foundational, its completion might lie beyond our own lifetimes. BUT you still do it anyway. It demands a kind of deep faith, a deep compassion, a willingness to lay stones knowing you might never see the spire touch the clouds. Especially when the thing you’re building feels impossibly heavy.

    There is a doc out right now on Netflix that shows what determination and hope can do - and also shows what some families are going through.

    It’s raw. It’s real. Canadian filmmaker, Matt Finlin, along with Broken Social Scene, join forces with Eddie and Jill Vedder to make a film documenting families in tremendous battles, alongside the scientists and advocates trying to find a cure for a devastating condition called EB (Epidermolysis Bullosa).

    The doc is called Matter of Time. And it’s not just about the fight; it’s about the people who show up to the fight, knowing the cathedral might not be finished - though they are trying to find a cure in this lifetime and making real progress- and they lay the stones along with the music that holds the space between them.

    Join me, Matt and Kevin Drew for a few minutes while we talk about this amazing film and the families fighting like hell for a future they might not get to fully live in. I think this doc should be required viewing for families and - anyone really - to build those blocks of empathy.

    Raising awareness and finding a cure for EB has been the goal of the Vedder family for well over a decade. With the Matter Of Time documentary coming out recently, it’s been on our minds and we’ve been looking for a way to help.
