So, is this line about suicide?

or something less dark?
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"

A high tide during a full moon is called a spring tide. It's when the tidal force is strongest, causing the greatest difference between high and low water.  It may help to consider the first line of the verse as well "The ocean is full cuz everyone's crying, the full moon is looking for friends at high tide."  The oceans filled with everyone's tears creates a large body of water, the full moon's gravitation pull on the oceans ("looking for friends") creates the high tide.  "The sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow's denied" is the emptiness that's left behind (low tide forming after the moon's pull let's go).  The whole verse could be a message to reach out and get the help you need to overcome hard times. Or that you're not alone and there are others feeling the same pain as you. But you are yours and only you can control the world around you, so don't ignore the friends, the help, the feelings that it's presenting to you.

i have just recently learnt I am Mine on guitar & when you kind of become part of the song the & lyrics become more important. This is maybe one of Ed's best lyrics & after loss & tragedy that they & the world witnessed around this time he is pouring his heart out as he can only do. Riot Act is where Ed came through with his most impressive songwriting

I'd say Binaural. If we are talking lyrics.

And Riot Act is my favorite album.

"I never knew soap made you taller" is the "the moss in the aforementioned verse" of the 21st century

EDIT: No skip that. There must be some even crazier line in "The Fixer".

“I study your face” from Sirens is the heavyweight champion of cringe worthy lyrics.  Followed closely by the rest of the lyrics from Sirens in second place.

Compared to anything released prior to 2003? Sure, but as the last two albums go it is just fine and miles better than some of the backspacer stuff

Most of the lyrics of the Lightning Bolt record are better than everything else that was released around that time. What do people expect from them?

I'm not a lyricist. But I don't understand why he didn't made it a line that actually rhymed with "Breaking news and building walls"

Yep. Sirens is a lot better lyrics-wise than Lightning Bolt. However softrockish and mature it is.

If you mean cheesy and bombastic when you say “softrockish and mature” then I’m in full agreement.

I've seen, numerous times over the years on these boards, many folks talk about how "I never knew soap made you taller" is the worst lyric they ever wrote.  No one ever explains why, though?  What exactly is so bad about that line - especially in the context it was written - that makes it so "cringe-worthy" or whatever?  I've always thought it was one of the more direct, resourceful statements they've ever written.  Between 24 hour news and 24 hour advertisements, it's all a bunch of fucking nonsense and it's no good for any of us.  It's all just people trying to sell you shit, whether it's consumerism or ideals.

The TV, she talks to me, breaking news and building walls
Selling me what I don't need, I never knew soap made you taller
So I'm riding away, hiding away
So much talk it makes no sense at all
    My senses have gone

Yep. It's very similar in that respect to Zappa "I'm the Slime"

I don't like that it doesn't rhyme. It sticks out weirdly for me. That's the only issue I have.

Don't have a problem with it in any other way. I like the verse.

Because it just nonsense wording. I know it’s trying to talk to the absurdity of what is being sold on infomercials and such but it just doesn’t flow with the previous lines. I expect way more lyrically
