    BBC World News is covering it live from Christchurch. 

    They told every mosque in NZ to shut down. Schools too. Big cricket thing going on and the Bangledash cricket team was in the mosque but was able to escape. 

    Four people are in custody - 3 men and 1 woman. 

    The Prime Minister. Jacinda Arden, said that it was "extraordinary, unprecedented, one of New Zealand's darkest days" And shooter was described as a white - she said "they (shooters) have no place in New Zealand and the mosques have a lot of migrants and refugees in attendance and they chose to make New Zealand their home and they are us, the shooters are are not"  That's what the head of a democracy should sound like. 

    They found IED's attached to vehicles and they believe that the danger is on-going because of multiple sites and multiple types of  weapons. 

    Calling it a terrorist attack. 

    I don't care what Trump tweets. He's an embarrassment. The U.S. no longer has a normal relationship with NZ because of that horrible man.

    Somebody was live streaming the shooting, but they have pulled it down. Thank goodness, it's bad enough what's happened to the dead and wounded and witnesses. 

    Said the guns had slogans painted on them. The shooters said 'let's get the party started'.

    Watching this I feel so badly for those people. There were lots of young people at climate change rallies and they have told everyone to get inside and have everyone on lock down. 

    They are not saying how many were killed but it's going to be high, you can just tell from how they are talking about it

    I hate intolerance and I hate terrorism and I hate guns and I hate hate.. I wish America was a good place. They are embracing the refugees and migrants fiercely and ostracizing the white terrorists. 

    There is a manifesto circulating on line 

    Edit - all of the mosques in NZ are on lock down. Schools are not. They are trying to connect the school children at the climate protests with their parents.

    BBC just said that the fatalities were estimated to be 27 edit - wounded might be 50.  But nothing official.  Disgusting  people who did this.  

    I hope the fatalities aren't that high. So sad.

    I felt sympathy as soon as I heard a whiff of the news. I’m sorry I didn’t express my sympathy first. At the next mass shooting I’ll be sure to do that first before I criticize our white nationalist president.

    If I had the answers to those questions, I would be healing the world.  

    I have to say that the PM of New Zealand is such a passionate advocate for all NZ'ers, especially refugees and her stern condemnation of the violence, the intolerance and how this is the opposite of who they are.  She is angry and calling out extremism, regardless of where it comes from. She says they were chosen because they are not a country of extremists and how she will not let this change who they are.  She's talking right now.

    It's an absolute headfuck to be here. It's a small place population wise-I've sadly had to enquire about the safety of loved ones in other bigger places but here, well there was just that wonderfully naive view that nothing like this would happen here. Instead I was anxiously awaiting news from family in schools and workplaces who couldn't get out.

    One of the supposedly nice things about taking my German fianceé here was that we wouldn't have to worry about this shit. I feel horrible to be this wrong.

    This is so bizarre/surreal. I’m an American and I’m currently in my 3rd out of 7 weeks student teaching abroad in Auckland, NZ. It feels like this shit is following me. It is heartbreaking to see how shook the people here are from this. Don’t get me wrong, 49 dead is massive even by US standards but we’ve become so numb to it compared to what I’m seeing here. 

    The school I’m at here in NZ is so free and open, there’s huge windows and the kids get to run around everywhere, so much different from what I see in the States. It would be a real shame if this whole culture would have to change because of these fucking scum bags.

    What a shame that such a wonderful opportunity for you, teaching in NZ, has been marred by this experience. Let’s just hope that this ends up being an isolated act by a loser whose name is not worth remembering, and that the lovely, open NZ culture goes on.

    I just don't understand the hate, I really don't.  The biggest disparity in my house growing up was Red Sox or Yankees.   My heart goes out to the people in New Zealand.
