Estate planning should be proactive.
My Dad is in year 15 of his father's stuff and there still more to go through. I reckon it will be 20 years for me to go through his stuff. Both avid Antique collectors. Awesome stuff with value. Double edged sword though.0 -

My wife is not looking forward to dealing with my massive record collection if I leave the planet first. I told her to let my buddy choose what he needs and to have him sell the rest for her. If it's a white inner sleeve I tend to write what that pressing was limited to, for easy reference. I'm sure I will cut the current collection in half sometime in the next 10-20 years. I've already had 2 Great Record Purges in my lifetime and though there are a few I wish I had kept, I generally don't miss them at all. Already got rid of the toys and comics nonsense.1991- Hollywood Palladium, California with Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains -RIP Magazine Show Oct. 6th
1992- Lollapalooza, Irvine, CaliforniaNothing since then. I suck.
2016- Fenway Park, Boston - Both glorious nights
2022- Oakland Night 2
2024 Sacramento, CA0 -

You only live once. If your kids want to give it away, who gives a shit, they can do what they want. Buy as much shit as you want to and do with it whatever the hell you want to.I'm like an opening band for your mom.0

I'm not a collector so I don't have much to add to this thread. With this said, this discussion in very entertaining/informative! Awesome stuff!0

I've been collecting, shedding, and collecting since my high school days in the mid 60's and have seen a lot of stuff come and go (including dozens of Fillmore poster and handbills that my folks tossed out while I was gone for a while, so don't trust your stuff with your parents unless you let them know it's value!). For the last several days I worked on refining what I have and shedding things I don't really value as much.Over the years, I've learned to think of my books, records, posters, etc. not so much as my stuff as simply things that I am care-taking until they moves on to other hands. That's given me the incentive to be a good custodian of these cultural artifacts. As far as where they go after I'm gone, my wife and I put into our will and trust specific directions for where things are to go. I made the choice about who will get my books, records, guitars, etc. not on whom I am closest to, but on who I believe will both appreciate and care for the things they will inherit. So now I'm quite comfortable with enjoying these things in my time, and knowing that their next home is quite secure."It's a sad and beautiful world"-Roberto Benigni0
