What if the fans "took over" the fanclub single?

Inofficially that is.

There are a bunch of great musicans amongst us in the... dare I say... Jamily... and also great graphical artists amongst all of us.... faithfull.

  • What if we every year open up for fans to do a cover of a Pearl Jam song and submit it. And then we all vote for our favorite.
  • Two songs are picked (maybe one "soft" and one "hard" to honor the Greatest Hits album). The artists will have to agree on the color of the vinyl.
  • People can pre-order the single similar to the Vaults.
  • If we reach enough preorders to break even - we press it, and ship it out.
  • We do it again the year after.

Just a thought.

And obviously we would put a few extra cents into it so the 7 inch cover has a spine. Because vinyl covers without spines sucks.

Brilliant idea.  I’m totally down for it.  I’m guessing it would be more expensive, closer to $20+ a pop?  Not sure about the legal aspect of pressing copyrighted (is it?) material though- but assuming it’s not for any profit, it should be ok?

I think this is a great idea just from the perspective of everyone will see what a pain in the ass this will be to do year after year and how much work it will be and then we can all complain when the OP drops the ball and it starts showing up later and later until he is forced to give up and cancel it.  =)

I totally missed that somehow. I thought it was a fan created single but with a PJ song on it, taken from one of the thousands of files we all have.  Whoops... yeah, can’t say I’d want to pay for someone else’s song :(

    Nope, not for me either.

When I first read this I thought it said "a fan would run the single" in meaning that a fan would decide what to put on the said record.

I would be good with that idea, get someone fresh in there like the one that was just offered by a fan on here.  What a gem that is!

Might run into a few legal issues pressing and selling someone else's work

Just make a poll and let people choose two songs of the last year tour for it. Could be a cover or a song with another artist.
Use a pic of the song for the cover. Easy to do.
To make it a surprise, don't let people know what songs were chosen.

The 10C would be letting said fan pick song for said record that PJ did perform and if it was on someone else recording I'm sure that they are friends still.

    No legal battles there.

I would not like that, because I would know about the choices that "could have been". Haha.

I'd rather they surprise me. As long as it its Toledo 2004 or Copenhagen 2007.

I don't want to piss on any cornflakes or anything, but I just can't imagine there would be enough people who want such a thing on vinyl to make this feasible.

I think you all are vastly understating the process. Vinyl isn’t cheap and it’s backed up like crazy. (Especially since we’re not talking a big number here.) Pearl Jam might be good dudes but they’re just not going to let amateurs do something like this because they’re fans. Lots of legal red tape.

In my mind I imagined a completely rogue, bootleg situation where info was passed around to members who wanted to  buy in, artwork is submitted, chosen.  Two PJ songs of the selected artist’s choosing are pressed onto colored wax and distributed to those who paid into the pot.  Not too difficult, but obviously pretty illegal.  It’s not any fun if you’re not breaking any laws though.

someone else covering a pj song is not something I’d be into.

ah...don't take it that way.  not every idea was meant for execution.  However, the sentiment should and can be salvaged.
