I absolutely LOVE this song!! Probably my favourite off Vitalogy and in my Top 5 (though that changes frequently)

Coming up to the Australian leg of this world tour (2006), I had noticed it was played a few times during the US and Europe legs. I had never heard this song played live, but I fucken wanted to hehe

Having my tickets for the Oz shows, I decided to swing the odds in my favour, so I sought to create a sign, requesting this awesome song.

My best chance was Adelaide 2, as my 10C tickets wouldnt guarantee me front row. My Adelaide 2 ticket was bought through the public sale, and I scored fromt row in between Mike and Ed.

    My mission:

Went to the local hardware and newsagent. Bought black and red thick marking pens, a ruler, scissors and a drop sheet. Went back to the hotel and cut up a spare pillow case.

After a few sketches, i was ready to fill in the sheet. A masterpiece if you ask me...

    The Show:

I waitied until the encores, I didnt want to go to early, just in case Ed forgot that he had seen it (drinking problem).

I managed to show it at the end of Crazy Mary, towards the end of Encore 1. Ed saw it while standing to the side of the stage. His head went back with a chuckle and smiled. Mike saw it at the end of his solo, and looked at me as if to say "what, you think I make any decisions??" and when Jeff saw it, he smiled, leant back into his Jeff stance, and played 1 line of the chorus!! We were going nuts!!

During the break between encore 1 and 2, the roadie came out, scribbled out a song on the setlists on the stage, and wrote a different song in...

When the guys came out, Ed said "gonna take care of a couple of requests, this one is from last night" and proceeded to play I Believe in Miracles.

When that finished, my heart was racing, everyone around was cheering in anticipation. Then it started...

Matt on the drums, Ed looks right at me, pionts at me and says:

'AND REQUEST NUMBER 2 (he yelled it)'

At which point we lost our motha-fuckin minds!!!

Just had to share this experience, was truly amazing.

Here is the link to the sign, basic, yet effective hehe

Cheers mate. I was just browsing through the different sections a while ago and came across this thread. Loved reading about The Gorge, would truly have been amazing!!

It is one of the more awesome songs in their catalogue, but ill always have that memory of "and request number 2!"

The funny thing was during the first break, some of the people we were travelling around Oz with asked me "what's the sign say?" When i showed them they kept saying 'they wont play it :D'

They were fucken happy when they did though haha

I know some day you'll have a beautiful life in somebody elses sky
but why can't it be mine.
I don't think these people understand no one understands we belong together together.

I'd stop and talk but "I'm already in love"

Does this mean in love with life.....and that's the reason for not giving in to the drug?

as far as studio recordings go: satan's bed is with out a doubt one of PJ's most rocking and original sounding tunes. and yeah, the lyrics are just plain fucking awesome

"Call me Ishmael. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world." Herman Melville : Moby Dick

personally i feel there's a more religious side to Satan's Bed than only the denouncement of adultery through such a far out metaphor as "Satan’s bed"

See, and I don't get adultery out of the song. I think the temptation is some sort of drug - maybe heroin.

"Although I must admit...still visits my place
Uninvited, as you know, he don't wait
Funny how he always seems to fit in
Funny how I always want to give in
Sundays, Fridays, Tuesdays, Thursday, the same
Sometimes the special guest, he don't like to leave"

I see this as the drug dealer or stash that is always around and very tempting - you know you shouldn't but you always seem to give in.

"Who made, who made up, made up the myth
That we were born to be covered in bliss?
Who set the standard, born to be rich?
Such fine examples, skinny little bitch
Model, role model, roll some models in blood
Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us
I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club
I'd stop and talk, but I'm already in love"

I see this as the example of how rich and famous people make the hard drugs fashionable - and set the standard to the youth that if you are not like them - then you are not cool.

    "(Ah torture...follows reward...
    Follows torture...follows reward...
    Oh, oh my butt...)"

The cycle of chasing the dragon.

"Never shook Satan's hand, look see for yourself
You'd know it if I had, that shit don't come off"
    "I'll never suck Satan's dick...
Again, you'd see it, you know, right round the lips"

These two lines, while out of order from the song, I think says the same thing. Junkies have physical signs that don;t come off - it is apparent with track marks and waht not. Also, sucking Satan's dick could be the crack pipe or something - and crack smokers get and dry and white lips around their lips.

"I'll rise and fall, let me take credit for both
Jump off a cliff, don't need your help so back off"

So many artists say that they take heroin to increase their artistic abilities. but here Ed is saying "Fuck that - I get the credit for my artistic abilities." And without that high he has the ability to fuck his own life up without the help of that shit.

"I'll wait for an angel, but I won't hold my breath
'magine they're busy, think I'm doing okay..."

Here is the only religious statement in the song - and I take it as Ed still questioning and making excuses why it seems like God or his angels really don't intervene and help that much.

When I read that interpretation, everything seemed to click.
