im still fairly new the pj, i discovered them through my guitar teacher, he went on and on about how they were (and still are) the only group that are the 'ideal' band, awesome songs, great arrangments, briiliant live, everything you want in a great rock group. i really took notice around the time riot act was released, and my dad had yeild and binaural, and i've worked my way back from there. the lyrics had guitar work are so unique and effortlessly moving.
i dont think any other group has as much consistancy in song quality as pearl jam. they can play two completly different sets over two nights and they will both be of equal quality, such a brilliant back catalogue.
I was working in a salon and everyday at 12, I would be fixing an old lady's hair and the song hungerstrike would come on. I would shut her out of my mind and bask in the music because basically I really was going hungry, not ever being one to eat breakfast.
I loved the song, and my hubby at the time loved it too. He would turn it up on our roadtrips to various places. I never really took notice to PJ though until the Jeremy video came out. Then, my ex bought Ten, and I've been hooked since.
It's a tough one, because it was so long ago, but it was like it was meant to be. In about 1992, my friend from Seattle, who used to live in Minneapolis came to visit me. And he brought a bunch of grunge tapes with like Gruntruck, screaming trees,Nirvanna, soundgarden and a Pearl jam bootleg. I knew of some of these bands, my older brther had the Ten album, and I liked it, but did't know the magnitude it was going to have on me.
Anyway back to the bbotleg ny buddy had. It had State of love and trust on it, a bunch of ten songs, wash, and breath. When I heard SOLAT I new I was hooked. I listened to that song for days after the first time I heard, since I made a copy of the tape. I just felt I could really relate to the music. Now I am 26 and I bought every album as they came out, and to this day I think the next one is better than the last.

my uncle has ALWAYS listened to pearl jam, and he turned my brother into a bigger fan than he was. so naturally my brother was always playing their songs but i was into like blink 182 at the time and all of this really bad music that i thought was good. anyways, i just liked the mtv-style songs like evenflow and jeremy. but i grew through that period of liking bad music, found some of his good bands like nirvana, pumpkins, rage, chili peppers, etc... finally i found the Touring Band 2000 DVD in his room and put it in once i saw even flow at the back. so i watched it, and was of course stunned by the amazing solo by mike during it. i watched it and was mesmerized by how good it was at the time to me (and still is). so i watched it and jeremy but really didn't know any of the names of other songs i liked. but one time i just kind of let it roll in the background and it grew on me to the point where now ive watched it countless times and pearl jam is arguably my favorite band. i'll never forget the first time i heard go on it, i was like wow, i've never seen a band thats lasted so long yet still remains to have so much energy. it's safe to say that tb2k changed my life forever...
"Last time I think we played that song here was like, a long time ago, and there was a bonfire in the back and people were like throwing each other into it...very exciting days but a huge fucking relief that that's not how it is tonight..." Ed Irvine Night 1 2003, after Deep
I got my toes wet in PJ when i was in my last year of high school, 01. Only Really got into them in my college days because my buddies introduced me to songs and albums i didn't know about. The first album i bought was actually a combo package of vs. and Vitalogy on sale.
it was when viatology first came out that i started getting into pearl jam...i wasn't really into any type of music but enjoyed anything that sounded good i guess. i got a hold of my brothers viatology album, started listening and really liked it, the music the voice the words. it was when i was watching tv one day and saw a rerun episode of when pj sang porch on snl that i really got hooked. i watched it and thought wow...this guy was putting his whole body into this song and it really meant something to him. from then i bought my first pj cd..no code..and the rest is history...they have insprired me to do so much i even started playing guitar.

Basically I have loved PJ from the begining but I would love to read your storys of how you got into them if it was later. What was the first album and didyou go straight out to get the rest?If you are a younger fan how did you get into them(considering the rise and rise of bling bling and skateboard stuff)?
bling bling u goose
!! ha
my friend let me ten and then i got them for christmas
i sucked when u get them all at the same time its not as good, its like u dont work for them or collect them
My friend was really into, although he was going through some serious mental stuff at the time so i wasn't sure if it was helping him or hindering him. Then i saw the Film clip for Jeremy, and totally took to the band and the songs. I got right into the whole "Seattle" style music. That was the early 90's, and since then i have always been on the look out for any new recordings of PJ songs i could get my hands on!

I remember back when I was 6 yrs old in 1993, my brother made me a mixed tape with songs from PJ, Nirvana, Thin Lizzy and Soundgarden on it. That was my music then and still is. He also thought it would be cool to dress me up in a home made PJ t-shirt and send me out to play. My mam took it off me saying that it was a rag and people would think we were 'scruffs', I never say that t-shirt again!
Hi! I´m a very young PJ fan, not only because of my age I discovered "Ten" in our library last year. Then i remembered that an ICQ friend had said, that PJ is the "orgasm of music history" ( i don´t know how to translate, but he said, that PJ is one of the best band he had ever heard )
so i take this cd with me and i listened to it all the time. Now i ve got also binaural and live on two legs. Other Cds will follow. i`m sure
I just know one other girl, who loves PJ, and i never have seen some clips or other stuff on TV (okay, yesterday was the unplugged concert on MTV, but thats all!!), so I´m really glad that i had discovered this cd in the library
I didn't really discover Pearl Jam until about 2 years ago. I know, I'm crazy! I knew of their signature songs from the radio over the years, but I didn't own one CD. I was reading an interview about one of my favorite hockey players and one of the questions was who was his favorite band. Needless to say he said Pearl Jam. I had some good high school guy friends that were into PJ too, so I decided to check them out. I downloaded a few songs to get a taste of their music and that was it! I was totoally hooked! The first CD I bought was Ten and I loved it. I had gotten a lot of money for my birthday and Christmas, so I went to the store and bought the other 6 CDs. I listened to them all and I couldn't believe what I had been missing. I bought Riot Act as soon as it came out and I also got Live On Two Legs. I got Lost Dogs for Christmas. No other band has ever affected me the way Pearl Jam has. I went to their concert in April '03 and it was one of the best experiences of my life! I cannot wait to see them live again! I wish I could meet the guys and tell them thank you for doing what they do. They really have had a huge impact on my life. Isn't amazing what music can do to you??

And I don't think you want other people changing you, I think the only person that can change you is yourself. So if you ain't happy, if you're reading magazines about generation x-ers and thinking 'yeah, I'm one of them', well fuck that. Don't let anyone tell you who you are. No, no. No one can tell me who I am."~ Eddie Vedder (9/26/96)
I've been a fan all along. dont really remember how or exactly when I got into them although it must have been when I was about 16 when ten came out.
The "grunge" thing was taking off and I guess that's when it all started. I lost a bit of interest in them for a little while (around about binaural - was living in London and I guess just got into different music) but saw them live again last year which blew me away and now I am a bigger fan than ever - collecting everything I can find! I get so much pleasure out of this band.
As the Beach Boys say "God only knows what I'd be without you"!!
I will hold the candle till it burns up my arm
i'll keep takin' punches until their will grows tired
i will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind
hey i won't change direction, and i won't change my mind
how much difference does it make
I only really got into them last year - just after they toured here, so that was excellent timing... but anyway yeah one of my friends played me "soldier of love" and then I remembered one of my other friends was a massive fan, so I had a proper listen, and ta - da!!
They are so awesome, I don't know how I managed to ignore them for the first 16 years of my life!
I got into Pj around the release of the Binaural album. The first album of their's I bought was Ten after hearing the wonderful Alive. After buying the album it took me a while to really love it but after a few days of listening I was hooked. I then bought Binaural and thought it was miles beyond any music out there. I proceeded to buy every studio release Pj have done and have been listening to all of them religiously to date. For me it was a slow progression into the band, but well worth the wait.
"This is a public service annowncement... with guitars!!"
I first heard them when I was in college. A guy I played rugby with bought Ten and I went out and bought it the next day. The sound was so raw, but melodic. Porch got me moving.
The next summer I saw them at Lollapalooza and actually hung out with them for a few minutes watching Ministry.
When Vs. came out it sounded more like a sophomoric album. Good songs, but no identity. I thought much the same of Vitalogy--some great songs, but I didn't get the sense of focus. I heard the radio show they did when they played some songs live and thought it was great, so I was still listening.
No Code put me over the edge. Such a great selection of songs and mood and when they followed up with Yield, I was convinced that they were best band to come around in decades. So creative. So deliberate and so good live.
Now I just appreciate how experimental they are and the sound they keep developing. Each album is so distinct. Sort of like U2 except U2 jumped the shark.
Had my mate play pj to me for years before i actually liked them.I won't bore you with details, but growing up and experiencing new emotions in life caused me to suddenley take notice. Now they are the soundtrack to my life

cool thread. everyone has to have started from somewhere....
i had 10 and vs on cd. like the millions of other music fans it was impossible not to take notice of these 2 great cds. for some really weird reason i never followed up and bought vitalogy when it first came out. don't ask me why. then came no code. they toured my hometown for no code and i'm always obsessed about knowing as much as i possibly can before going to see anyone for the first time live. i therefore bought vitalogy and no code in the same week and gave them repeated listenings in preperation of the tour. after seeing them live for the first time i was instantly committed to it, and with a great passion.
once garcia passed away i was able to spend more money and time searching out other bands that meant something to me. i latched onto pearl jam instantly(1996). it's kinda weird cause i really never branched to far out into the other similar music styles like nirvana, nin, alice, soundgarden etc. my background is in classic/prog/hard rock and music that makes hippies dance, not really "alternative/grunge". although u2 were once labelled alternative! it's all rock n roll, bottom line.
pearl jam have always appealed to me. i have never lost the faith. the more i dug in, the more obsessed i became. i love bands who treat their fans with great respect and i have always totally admired that about pearl jam. it continues to make me proud to be a fan. other than the music still being A++ the fan club is what keeps me close today.
