Discovering Pearl jam

Hi there PJ friends

Just a few questions to throw out there.

Basically I have loved PJ from the begining but I would love to read your storys of how you got into them if it was later. What was the first album and didyou go straight out to get the rest?If you are a younger fan how did you get into them(considering the rise and rise of bling bling and skateboard stuff)?

  • My uncle has listned to them since the first time he heard them. He got me listining to them like a bad habit, I guess it was like in 98-99 somewhere in there and he had like a million live cd's and I guess after hearing them i went out and bought every cd I had enough money for......Now that all this punk has come out nobody really knows what real music is. I wish people would wake up!

My current bf was totally mad about them when I met him a year ago, I was never interested in hearing them really, a very different style to what I usually listen to. But last October-ish I heard Wishlist and then DTE and totally went mad for them! First album I got was Vitalogy and I'm still in love with it. Then I got Yield, worked backwards and currently dont have a job so I cant get Binaural or Riot Act but I've heard loads of boots off pearljamlive.com so all is not lost!
Not known them all that long but they're fuckin kickin my ass!
Appreciation and thanks to ||Release_Me|| for introducing me!

  • Wow I cant imagine having Vitology as my 1st album. Isnt it weird how we have our own order of loving the same thing?

I think listening to live albums must have been a great introduction...cool uncle. All my uncles are Tom Jones fans! ha ha

  • last year of school and my best friend handed me a rather dodgy copy of "ten" on cassette, got home that night and i was blown away, have not stopped listening to them since, that was over 10 years ago and they just keep getting better

It surely is. When I first heard it, my bf told me it was a different style to the bands normal tracks, more experimental and I really loved it so I was afraid I wouldn't like any of their other stuff but it really stuck with me and I love it. I can honestly see now how much more experimental it is and different from the other albums.

  • I was about 14 and my older sister was dating this 18 year old guy who was really into music, played in a band and all that. Well, I distinctly remember one night they were watching videos he had brought over and I walked through the room and heard Eddie's voice. I had never even heard of PJ, but I just stopped and listened to that voice and saw that gorgeous face. I was in love. Immediately stole my sister's Ten album and listened to it constantly. A year or so later, No Code came out, and it had the biggest impact on me. Been a huge fan ever since.

I'm 18, so I missed out on the heydays of a lot of my favorite bands, and I love to dig up old interviews and read them. I was reading R.E.M interviews (my favorite band) from the early '90s a few years ago, and I saw Pearl Jam popping up here and there, and also when Eddie sang with them at the Croc Cafe in 2001. I listened to a downloaded copy of Jeremy, and then bought Ten. I liked it a lot but wasn't hooked. I was intrigued enough to get Vs. and Binaural, so I was a mid-level fan by that time. Then, I bought Riot Act when it came out. I was hooked. I bought the rest of the albums and tickets for the tour. :)

You don't want to know how many bands I got into through the "R.E.M mentioned them" method - and now I do the same thing sometimes with Pearl Jam.

i got stuck on one of those"do this training course or you don't get your welfare"things;i noticed that this guy was always wearing cool band tshirts,so i started talking to him, told him that i wanted to expand my musical taste...so i gave him 4 cassette tapes and asked him to record stuff he thought i may like..well..a few days later he came in with a bag of 28 tapes!including ten,vs and vitalogy(that was all they'd released at that point).it took me a few wks to get round to listening to pj(believe it or not,i had NEVER heard anything by them!)...then i put ten on...oh.my.f---ing.god.THAT VOICE!straight after that,i put vs on,somehow i played the 2nd side 1st..if i had balls, rats would've grabbed me by 'em!!now i tell anyone who'll listen(unfortunately not many!)that they're the best band in the world..innovative,original,don't pander to musical trends, not afraid to follow their own pathway...i'll shut up now...

I was 10/11.. My sister listened to them. I'd walk into a room and see AIC videos and PJ videos on tv all the time. I even remember seeing a PJ cover band on tv and thinking "THEY'RE NOT PEARL JAM!!" LoL, I was so little.

Also my sister listened to Hunger Strike a lot.

I think it's so neat that 13 yr. olds are still getting into them.

I've been a fan all along. With each passing year, I find that I appreciate the music more. PJ is like the soundtrack to my life. There's always a song that reminds me of a time, a person, or an experience. For the past 13 years, they've been a friend to me. I can't wait to see them in Cleveland again!

I was on a school camp sort of thing - millions of different schools competing against each other to be crowned HPV champ - dodgy cycling thing - and these guys camping next to us had their little old boombox going listening to the radio, when 'given to fly' came on and one of them said it was his fave band playing - think i was 13 at the time - anyway, over the course of the week we started chatting about music and stuff, and when i got home i went and bought Yield, then Vitalogy - the rest came soon after! Then PJ came to melbourne for the Yield tour, so i rang up this guy and asked him if he was going, and could i go with him - so now every time PJ hits melb we organise a crew to go - waiting for the next one now!

  • I love PJ. When they came here to Mexico I didn´t know much about them. The only song I knew was Love Boat Captain and some others like Jeremy, Do the Evolution. I loved Love Boat Captain when it came to the radio. Then I began to know more about them because of the radio station. When I heard all the good music they play and when I heard them live (wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!), I realized they were the best rock bands. I didn't know how many songs I liked from PJ without knowing they were from them. I can say that PJ is my favourite band ever

when i was 10, in 92, i heard evenflow one night while ice skating at the ice rink,,,

i asked the dj who it was, she told me... i took all my savings and bought the cassette the next day.

i only listened to evenflow and alive,,,, then jeremy came on mtv... and i added that... rewinding back and forth... one time i rewound too far and heard the end of once... i was breathless... i listened to the entire tape start to finish.... it blew my fucking mind... and 12 years later,,, it still does

Well, when Ten came out I was 8 years old. I owned the tape, but at that age, I couldn't really appreciate it. Sophomore year in college, love for Pearl Jam hit me. I had purchased a CD copy of Ten in high school, but not really listened to it. I started, then burned Vs. and Vitalogy, then went nuts.

  • well a good friend of mine absolutely love them, so he's always talking about how great they are, and he emailed me a few of their songs like Nothinman, Sad, Man of the Hour, Alive, Black and I loved them too, and I asked him what cd I should get and he said that Ten was their best so I got that just two months ago actually, and I'm in love with it, and I just bought Lost Dogs two weeks back, so there's my story....

    here's my story..
i came from a place called syria some of you might know where it is..
anyway in syria it was so hard to get some rock music like 8 or 9 years ago ...you know arabic country not much into rock music...but i was a rock head that time ..and i was trying to get hold of some bands that could rock me...once i was walking and there was a small recordsshop i got in and i started to ask him about music called grunge lol( it's so funny to remember this) and he said yeah we have this album i don't like it but if you want some grunge music try it ...and it was VITOLGY ...i took it and i was gazing at the cover all the time you know love from the first sight ...and then i went with my parnts to the country side and on the way in the car i put vitolgy in my ears and start listning....and the first one i listend to was TREMOR CHRIST and then BOOOOOOOOOOM BOOOOOM BOOOM i was choqed blwon away stoled gone ....
i repeated the song around 5 times in row and then i said ok enough listen to the rest and another boombs filled my ears ...i will never forget that day ...then i got to listen to ten and vs ...i loved them so much and since that day and i'm dreaming about seeing them and it became one of my life goals JUST TO SEE THEM...you know they will never play in syria ...then like 3 years ago i moved to sweden and i'm waiting on hell fire for that day the day i see them ....maybe i'm the only arabic guy on the board who love them ...it's kinda cool ...but there's alot of people in syria love them too...
so i can say that i'm a fan since like 9 years and i'm extreamly proud of that .

long one aaa ? soory .

Once upon a time, there was a girl who didn´t know about pj´s existence....... can you guys believe it!

    Here´s my story.....

I was at high school when I first heard "Jeremy", all my friend just loved the TEN album, but in that time I prefered pop music so I didn´t care about it very much...

Later, everyone at school was singing pj´s songs all day long, but I didn´t know why they loved this new band that much, I thought they were crazy or something.

Anyway, there was a moment that I just couldn´t resist anymore, I was sick and tired of hearing "Pearl Jam this, Pearl Jam that" everywhere!... but, somehow, I ended at the shop buying the "famous" cd, I still can´t remember why I did it if I hated them so much...

Anyway, the funny thing is that once I had the cd on my hands, it took me just a second to wake up! I immediatly found out why my friends were so excited about this knew band!

The music was fantastic and that voice..., that voice was just glorious! I remember that I almost cried with "Release", "Black" and I didn´t even understood English!

After that day I joined to my friends at school and we started a club!

Now I don´t miss anything about them! Ed´s just my idol!

    And... that´s it!

A guy I had a little "thing" for back in '92 turned me on to them. I had never heard of them before, and then the first album I really got into was Vs, though he'd made me a tape of Ten. God, I haven't thought of him in a while- we worked together and I found every excuse to pass his office. ahhhh Those were fun times.

  • I'm still very much getting into them. My girlfriend has always been a fan, but for some reason I just didn't get grunge, I was more into heavy metal... I kinda liked Nirvana and thought I was cool, guess that shows I've grown :)

Anyway, I went through a music videos stage, and came across "Do the Evolution". From that moment I KNEW there ws something in Pearl Jam I had obviously missed. It conveyed my frame of mind so well. Needless to say I picked up Yield and discovered a new world! Since then I went onto "Vs" and "Riot Act" and just found myself becoming addicted to Eddie's lyrics, and (you've got to admit it) his sexy voice.

Then "Ten" happened... I felt winded. I started listening to it about a years ago, and it moved me so much I cried! "Black" & "Jeremy" one after eachother just creates such an atmosphere of elated desperation it was unreal. I still haven't fully recovered from it yet, but I sit back comfortably in the knowledge that I still have NC, Binaural and Vitalogy to go.

    my story.

well my parents are seperated, and my dad likes pearl jam and has only really had Vs but for like 10 years, but coz of my parents split since i was 3 months old i never really heard it properly for along time, but my dad would often talk about them, i never really thought anything of them because id never heard of there music and just thought it was another band like all the others my dad would listen to (led zep, hendrix etc.) then about 2 years ago i was just sitting around the house watching t.v then then the intro to jeremy came on then up came "Pearl Jam - Jeremy" i thought 'oooo pearl jam finally get to hear them!' it was nothing like what ive heard b4 but i carried on watching it, i dont know why but ed really grabbed my attention, so by the end of the song i decided i really enjoyed the song. but never really followed it up, then i heard alive, loved that. so i downloaded jeremy, alive and daughter. i also tryed out given to fly but didnt really like it, but this christmas just gone i decided i would buy ten on a whim because lots of ppl say its amazing and i liked jeremy and alive. christmas day came and i stuck it in my player and left it to play, i loved all the tracks loads and i wasent even concentrating. i wasent even listening to black yet couldent help playing it over and over, then when he comes in the the WHY WHY WHY part i was like Fuuuuuuckin hell! ive been hooked on PJ ever since. i have 5 albums so far and planning to get the rest v. soon

I went back to work two years ago after being home with my sons for a long time......on the radio at work I kept hearing this magical voice singing the Beatles "Hide your love away" I had to find out who it was and what band he was with. it was Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam! I realized I knew some of their songs-but when you have four boys close in age-the noise level is insane....I stopped listening to music for a decade-I missed the start of Alternative Rock. After that....I couldn't get enough music-Pearl Jam brought me back to it. I lucked out with my timing.....Riot Act was soon released was given it by hubby for my birthday-loved it-next I bought all the albums they had out -Loved them all! Only days later, I was listening to my favorite Alternative Rock station and they announced the up-coming tour. The following day the DJ talked about fan club seating, feeling too old to be in a fan club I didn't join right away, but went to the 10c site and checked it out...I couldn't stop thinking about getting fan club seating-so the last possible hour I could have joined after major computer problems-I DID IT! I went to two great shows Uniondale and MSGII and wish I had gone to more. Purchased lots of boots and found the Rumor Pit. I can't wait for a new album and a tour-PLEASE....Pearl Jam lights up my world like nothing else. My sons and hubby no longer think I have gone insane and just accept the fact that I am addicted to the music!

I have been a HUGE fan of PJ for years now, my ex-husband (then boyfriend) was really into them when we first started dating and always played them, and as soon as i herd "indifference" that was it, I was hooked. PJ's music has helped me through alot of things over the years and to this day I still believe there is no one else in the world that compares to Eddie's fucking excellent voice. I live in Brisbane Australia and they are still Hugh over here, wish they would come out more often.

Well I got into Pearl Jam last summer. I was on holiday in America and I was in NJ listening to KROCK and Jeremy came on. My Uncle was amazed that I had never heard a Pearl Jam song before. I loved Jeremy so much that I went and bought Ten, Vs and a bootleg the next day. I have never looked back! Pearl Jam are the best band ever!
