Not at the show.  Venice in St. Marks square in the evening, then split a bottle of wine under the stars.  Went there on my honeymoon and made my wife wake up around 8-9p or so after jet lag to listen to classical music by quartet while drinking wine at a table there.  Ultra romantic.  But there are so many better places in Italy to propose, than at the show.  I would agree to have one of the shows as the celebration.
This. And good luck, please let us know how it went!

Try Terrazza del Gianicolo in Rome.
    Or Il Pincio.
Or Trinità dei Monti (above the Spanish steps).

Preferably at sunset or night. Good luck!

Thanks all for the really good feedback.  It really confirms what I already felt.  We will be in Venice for one day/night before heading to Padova for the first show, so I may do it there.  The engagement should be private and meaningful. The shows will be icing on the cake!

Again, thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply!

Best of luck.  I think you are on the right track.  Such a great opportunity for an engagement.

I had to do mine in a McDonald’s parking lot in -20 weather, so it could be worse??
Hopefully she didn't look at the ring and request it to be supersized.
    This weekend we rock Portland

Yeah, even if the marriage winds up being a bust, at least the engagement was awesome.

Lol. You might make the guy change his mind and run for the hills. But at least they’ll always have PJ in italy. But seriously don’t do it at the show.

I proposed to my wife in Venice - it's such a beautiful, romantic and unique place, really just any corner is stunning.
You'll see! Again good luck and happy travels

Hey OP, you may have already dealt with this, but in case you haven't... How are you getting the ring through airport security without your GF knowing about it? Or are you putting it in a checked bag? That seems mildly risky, but I guess bags don't get lost that often. Just FYI, you can call the airport you're flying out from and talk to them about how to get that ring through without security calling attention to it. Apparently they have "methods" that they know and will keep their traps shut if you do it their way.
    Good luck! :)

Good point. Also, I hope she isn't aware of your presence on here. Either directly or through snooping.

There was an on-stage proposal on opening night of the '98 tour...and then Ed asked them for their request and they fucking requested BETTER MAN.
Anyway, as someone who's been there/done that I wouldn't do a big public proposal - but that's just me. My then-gf/now wife would've murdered me. I proposed on top of a mountain in the middle of the Rockies where literally no one could find us.

You know Mrs FMe so you can fact check.

I proposed in 2006 with a Ring Pop.

Reason was simple....we are polar opposites on most things and she needed to pick out her own ring.  Any ring I would have picked out would have been crap in her eyes, as much as she loved me and would have wanted to not hurt my feelings.

Took her 4 months to pick out a 10th anniversary ring!

Evening on a small beach in St. John USVI 21 years ago, no one else around... I took some pics with my camera and then asked my GF/wife to video (vhs) the beach.  As she was videotaping me on the beach, I walked up to her and asked her to marry me.  She had to stop the video at that point, but she has it to watch if she’s wants to see it again.  I had the ring in my carry on backpack.  No one even asked about it.

I wouldn’t hide it in any body cavity, as the metal detector would likely set it off...

Wreck em!  You a Tech grad too?

Still lots of good advice coming in!  This will be my second marriage...her first. Hope I have learned a few things at this point.

There is a little bit of an age gap between us, also two different mentalities of dealing with this type of thing.  I'm going to give her a casual ring to wear for the engagement and let her pick out what she wants long term.  She's a modern woman! :)
She also doesn't want a big wedding.  She just wants the two of us to go out to Marfa, Tx and get married...just us...then have a party back home in Fort Worth.

That's a tough one. pal.  Our first date was for brunch on a Sunday morning a year and a half ago.  Ended up lasting all day and back at my place to watch the Cowboys/Packers playoff game.  The Cowboys lost but we didn't even care.  I played her some tunes and gave her a copy of Ukulele Songs.  I even played the first part of Without You for her (the only part I can play).  Eddie and PJ have been there from the beginning!  She LOVES Sleeping By Myself, but it doesn't really apply here :)

Also, she doesn't snoop on this site at all, so no worries there.

Keep the engagement stories coming folks!  Love reading them!

You were lucky then. Sometimes they make the person take it out of their bag right in front of the woman and ruin the surprise. The reason they do that is because of the possible value of the item I think - Someone could be transporting stolen merch or who knows what, etc etc. I'm sure it just depends on the person you happen to get at security (and what country you're leaving and which country you're entering of course). I know that just last year a friend of mine was bringing an engagement ring into the US from Canada, and he was advised to very specifically put the ring, wrapped in a particular material (can't remember what it was - maybe cellophane or something) in his wallet so they'd know he was a guy trying to get an engagement ring through in front of his GF, because if he tried to do it any other way the chances were good that security would question him about it when it went through x-ray.
