How well have previous presidents (R) or (D) done thus far in terms of negotiating anything with NK?
If it was easy, it would have been done a long time ago & wouldn't still be a big problem today.
    Understanding the issues?
How is it possible then to even be talking about negotiating with NK at this point.
No president prior has had a sit-down meeting with the leader of NK.  (I grant you that it hasn't happened yet & maybe it still won't happen.)
    Give it a chance.

This is who you’re putting your faith in.

I can’t wait for the “Little Rocket Man” tweet storm to come out after the first disagreement, the shape and size of the table.
Who else do you know of right now, is in a position to mabey (I stress the word Maybe)
do this?  You act as though it's easy peasy.  Take the blinders off man, he's not the bafoon you think he is, or are hoping for.
Trump didn't go to rocket man & ask for a meeting.  Rocket man is feeling the heat, from all of the sanctions & came asking Trump for a meeting.  If it occurs, it's historic.
From time to time, one of the most liberating things you can do for yourself is to be able to admit when you are wrong.
Admit it, if this comes to pass & NK backs down a bit or de-nuks, thats a good thing. If it doesn't, then it's back to the damn drawing board.
It’s for the exact reason that it’s not easy peasy. You love Team Trump Treason so much that you can’t see his faults, weakness? You’re not blinded by science or reason but love because you so desperately want and need a win. You’ve been sold a mirage and your love affair with Team Trump Treason blinds you to the reality of what he, the POTUS, doesn’t have, reason, knowledge, concern or ability to deal. You bought the myth. You own it. It won’t result in what you and I hope for. You’ll be played and I’ll tell you so.

Oh, and by the way? The South Koreans seem to be doing just fine without a US ambassador or Team Trump Treason’s tweets.

Team Trump Treason has publically stated they oppose the Iranian deal. Fact. Question to you: would you settle for the same deal with North Korea?

Jung-un could really capitalize on all this attention by making good on de-nuking and opening up his borders to tourism.  Look what happen with Vietnam.  That place was a hell hole post-Vietnam war.  Not so now.  We get a fair number of tourists who come into the bookstore (and why not?  Bookstore are rare places these days) and I've heard more than one person talk about how Vietnam is now one of those "go-to" places for tourism.

Start saving up those air miles, tourists.

If it doesn't, then it's back to the damn drawing board.
lol I’m hoping NK does denuclearize it would be great but that still doesn’t negate the fact that the idiot you voted for is still just that an idiot ...

Spent nearly six weeks in Vietnam over two separate trips and I'd tend to agree. Amazing place. They still wear the cost of the war as do Cambodia and Laos, but the resilience and strength of the people is incredible.

Not to mention that the DMZ is a natural wonder for eco tourists. An incredible oasis of nature waiting to be gently explored.

My guess, if the meeting between Trump and Kim even happens, Trump is going there with a deamand or an ultimatum of some sort. I believe if Trump gets even a slieght hint of something he doesnt like, he walks. This in his mind would make the whole meeting about him, and show what a tough guy he is. I have no idea. Im guessing Russia, China offered North Korea some sort of security, economic exchange protections for their pause in nuke program. North Korea still has nukes, no?

Then once it opened as another place for western tourist to vacation cheaply, then the corporations can move in for cheap labour and cheap vacations...yeah, North Korea things are looking up...

Everyone knows Trump has an ego. Maybe instead of it being a detriment, it can work for him in this case. Reason I say that? He could be so hell bent on getting N Korea to de-nuke because it will go down as his greatest accomplishment. He’s well aware of what’s at stake if this gets done. I just hope it happens. I’ll applaud everyone involved if that crazy SOB gives up his nukes.

There is no way North Korea would give up it's nuclear weapons. Wishful thinking.

Yes, sadly that scenario seems likely as well.

Kudos for running a bookstore Brian.  I attempt to shop at book stores when ever I can.  But your right, not to many left.  I have to drive a long way to get to a bookstore.  Online shopping is rapidly changing every thing.
You are right, and let's hope that Jung-un realizes that there is a better way.  Better him, better for us all that would be.  We can only hope.

Yes, sadly that scenario seems likely as well.
Then the west can harvest north Korea's natural resources ... sadly, almost always the west has motives, it probably not for the benefit of the North Koreans...still any talks can lead to positive change...

I’m using the literal definition. It may be unlikely that NK gives up their nukes but it is not an impossible outcome. I mean, hell, if you asked me 6 months ago if they would suspend bomb and ICBM testing I would have said that’s very unlikely too, yet here we are and that is exactly what just happened. Compared to how close we were (maybe still are?) to being on the brink of nuclear war a short while ago, this is all positive momentum and I hope it continues.

My apologies, biggs!  I read your response to dignin as "I would say impossible."  rather than"wouldn't".  It really is time for me to get new glasses!

I like your emphasis on "positive momentum".  It's difficult at time to remain positive  (and often for good reason) but the focus on "positive" and "hope" sure can't hurt.  So, well sad, biggs.

That we are having this conversation is a good thing.
Cheers to you Brian!  I hope your book store is doing well.
Do you have a bell at the front door when people come in?
I think it's so cool that you're have a good book store I wish we had a good book store in my town.  Ya know with some nice incents going and a guy behind the counter smoking a pipe.  That would be great.

I wouldn't have said NK suspending nuclear testing would have been very unlikely. The precedent has been set before. If you think they aren't still working on their nuclear program, I've got a bridge to sell you. The work continues, they just aren't currently detonating any bombs.

This has been the end game all along, nuclear weapons for leverage. There is no way they are going to give that leverage up. If anyone thinks that, they don't understand the history.

I like that the US is talking to NK. But if they go into talks with the idea that NK has to give up their nukes, nothing will change. I think we should accept NK as a nuclear power and start normalizing relations with them. I think we should dangle easing of sanctions if they can get their human rights record in better shape.

The non-nuclear NK ship has sailed, we better get used to it and deal with it.

Thank you RYME.  No, no bell but then my book business is run out of the home these days. I divide my time doing my own little book business plus help out in general and run a small vinyl LP section at The Bookery--  my wife and her business partner have run that bookstore for 36 years.   I fill orders for other stores (especially The Bookery) and have obscure stuff that would not do well in a store that I have listed on-line through Biblio.com .  The Bookery also does not have a front door bell but that door squeaks which works just as well that way, LOL.   My semi-retirement dream is to have a little part-time retirement store in which to offer just nice quality general inventory that I've hung on to-- about 10,000 volumes total,  about 20% of which are music related.

Perhaps I'll consider opening up a little store in downtown Pyongyang someday, lol.

New sheriff in town.  We ain't after oil, the United States has plenty of our own oil on hand.  Not into nation building anymore either like Bush was doing.
The United States doesn't invade just for the sake of invading.
Russia invading the Ukraine doesn't seem to bother you hey?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we import about 40% of our oil.  Also, I've read we import cheap oil and export expensive oil.  If NK had oil, it would be dirt cheap and we would have ours eyes on it, no doubt!

And yes, Russia is really good at invading countries as well. More big bad dudes.  Let's hear it for little, passive countries.

Why is it always one big bad ass empire after another?  History of the world since the advent of agriculture!
