Wash

one of the saddest, heartfelt...yet sexiest of pj songs.......such a total favorite that gets me every time.

Wash

Oh please let it rain today. This city's so filthy. Like my mind in ways.
Oh it was the time. Like a clean new taste.
Smiling eyes before me and tears from my face.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love, yeah.

Sin for sale. Buying just a need. O who planted all the devils seeds?
And what's the truth? And the truth that lies at home.
It's on the inside and I can't get it off. Yeah.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love, yeah.

What's clean is pure. But hey, I'm white on the outside. Though I stray.
What she don't know today might kill us both tomorrow. Bring it back someway.
Bring it back, back, back... to the clean form. To the pure form.

Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love.
Wash my love. Wash my love. Wash my love. Yeah
Wash my ...wash my...wash my love....yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh

i loooovvvvveeddd that they opened the last show of the north american tour at pnc arts center in 2003 with this tune - what an opener!!!
i'll ride the wave where it takes me

my favorite version is the one off of Lost Dogs. the ending is simply awesome.
I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.

This song is incredible. Makes me melt. Can't wait to experience it live...
  • The end of this song gives me chills everytime I hear it!!
It doesnt hurt.... when I bleed
    but memories...they eat me
    I've seen it all before,...
bring it on cause I'm no victim.

first song i ever heard em play live. wash, along with i've got a feeling, will always be special to me. mike gave me a copy of the alive single after a show in ithaca and i listened to those 3 songs, totally lost, totally elated for the whole 4 hour drive back to rochester that night (for people with a sense of direction or, ya know, a map, it should take about 2 hours.) and i still cant warm up to the lost dogs mix because i'm so attached to that 1st version.

has anyone heard the punked-up version of the song they performed new year's eve a long time ago??? that version was pretty good!
  • Anyone ever wonder if there is an anti-interracial-coupling thing going on here? see:

I'm white on the outside, though I stray (narrator in song hooks up with black girl) and then:

back to the clean form, to the pure form. wash my love.

just always seemed damn close to a condemnation of mixing the races. not that it would bother me: I don't necessarily judge an artist by the thematic or idealogical content of their art, only how well they pull it off, especially in a situation like this, where the narrator may very well not be Ed.

  • This is def. one of my favorite tracks on Lost Dogs. I have yet to hear it live, but I cannot wait. The music makes me want to play in the rain...

"oh please let it rain today, this city is so filthy, like my minds and ways..."

    "WASH MY LOVE..YAH"

Just because those are the words being presented doesn't mean that that is what the person is saying is right. It could mean that society labels inter-racial love as un-clean and impure. but by depicting it as love, something natural, saying that it is right, leads to the opposite of society being the one who is wrong for condemning it.

Eddie: I don't know whose idea it was but it was turned down.

Look at it from a different perspective, it could be someone with HIV trying to hide it from new lovers, white as in snow white is a metaphor in some books for purity, so the main character is trying to appear as without HIV, so more disease "devil's seed" can be sown. I haven't heard this yet, now I'm intrigued, and I'm sure my interpretation will change tomorrow.

Nicely done. Nice reminder that there is always another way to look at anything, especially a work of art. Cool.

You say your down on your luck...
and you say its a long way up...
And when your really down and out
and you feel like there's no way out
    let go...
...don't care about what they say...
    ...live and die anyway...
  • i've always taken it to mean...cheating on a significant other...that no matter what...you cannot escpae what you have done. every time i read through the lyrics...i believe that more and more. that said - tis the beauty of music - we all get different things from it. tis a beautifully tragic song in my minds eye.....terribly sexy too.....unbelievable. :)

It has to do with a taboo. Children, relatives, something of that nature. Wanting that in a sexual context could be construed as dirty. Hence the need to 'Wash my love'.

So, you're saying that Eddie fantasizes about incest and kiddie porn?

the narrator in a song is not always the singer. think about Daughter.

don't care for this song except the 12/31/92 show when they opened with a very fast, crunchy version of it. best version ever. that's how they should play it when they do

to me all of this means...even if you are never *caught*...you know you cheated and wronged your partner.........and how you wish you could bring it back to how it once was. to me - this song is very straightforward lyrically. could be just me though. :p

I respect your opinion, but I think it's anything but straightforward. I think it's a puzzle.

I changed my mind. I like your idea better.

hey...tis the beauty of music and art in general...we all take from it what we want and all see/hear different things. for me - it is one of the most straightforward songs...for you....maybe something else entirely. there are no wrong interpretations or answers when it comes to what you get from music....one of the many reasons why i love it so.

quite well said, and I thank you...I need to be kept humble--sometimes I think I have all the answers. It's refreshing to know I don't. You rock!

    ps...I'm being serious.

haha...i realize you were being serious. hey - i wasn't discounting your opinion in the least...no need to be *humble* about it. just meant - bottom line - none of us will ever really *know*. ed is usually not one to really decipher his words, and i for one am glad. i see no reason for it. you get your own meaning...as varied as they may be...and that is even better. much more personal. aanyway wash is an unbelievably beautiful song to me!!!

    I definately prefer "in ways"

Thanks for the moment.... I always loved to listen to this song, but this is my first time reading it.

Even more wonderful than I realized

    right???
sometimes reading the lyrics...w/o the benefit of music....adds even more to it. i find the same with many songs - especially pj's - and this song most definitely.

  • This song is great, I think if Ten wasn't the band's first album and had come out after they were more established, there would have been more tracks on it and Wash would be there instead of on Lost Dogs. Either way it's one of my favorites
