Brings tears to my eyes almost everytime i listen to it...The only version i have heard is in on the Perth bootleg with Mark Seymour, absolutely amazing!!!
How much difference does it make ?
***It's all state of mind***
oh my...GR VFC show...unbelievable experience...six rows back, dead center...i'm not the type to claim things happened that didn't...but i swear ed was singing directly to me...even if he wasn't in his mind, he was in mine...i'll never forget that time...truly beautiful.
ds
Same here.....although I was 7 rows back, so it may have "seemed" he was looking at you, but he was actually looking at me.
When I hear my GR VFC boot, I have to play that song at LEAST 3 times before moving on.....

ha! the seventh row didn't have seats in the center...only rows 1 through 6 did...:p...Ed was looking right in front of him...which was center stage...so he was singing to ME, not you. . it sure felt like he was singing to me anyway. .
does your boot have clapping/talking at the beginning of the song so you can't quite hear the first few notes?
ds
And no one sings me lullabyes
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky....

Yes, it does. It also has someone going "WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
REALLY LOUD in the very beginning of the song. I wince/laugh everytime I hear that.

I have been meaning to post this in this thread for a long time - finally have found the time.
On January 29th there was a benefit held in Sydney for the tsunami victims. The bands that played included Midnight Oil, Powderfinger, Silverchair, John Butler Trio, Nick Cave, Missy Higgins and the fabulous FINN BROTHERS. (plus more).
It was a great day - everyone performed so well - a great atmosphere and i think the bands picked up on it - some commented on the 'giving vibe'.
But there is no doubting the highlight of the day was Neil and Tim Finn walking out on stage with only their guitars and a kick drum, sitting down and playing a mind blowing acoustic set of Crowded House and Split Enz faves!
Their final song was introduced as "a song written by an aussie that we wish we'd written ourselves. Sing along with us and maybe they'll here us up there" (refering to the tsunami victims i presume). They they played the most beautiful version of Throw Your Arms Around Me that i have ever heard. The 60,000 strong crowd sung their hearts out and i was up the front with friends crying like a baby! i'll never forget it.
The organisers of Wave Aid are releasing a DVD of the day on 16th of May. they havent confirmed the setlist as yet, but i pray this version of TYAAM is on it! Check it out if you can - you wont regret it!
OMG!!!

Great song
I also was at the GR VFC show with my guyfriend. Well we were very close just-friends until the week before the show. but I couldn't hold back my insatible lust for him, and we confessed our true feelings for one another. So on the way to the show we talked about our relationship growing and both parties happiness.
I had not heard this song before and ed played it after Deadman, acoustic in the opening set before Deathcab for Cutie. Like i said i had never heard it before and during it my heart was racing and i kept looking at my guyfriend out of the corner of my eye. I could feel his desire to wrap his arms around me but he gets nervous easily, after a few more beers we were arm in arm for the rest of the show and after more and more beers i was sucking his dick in the parking lot after the show.
awesome night, just wish i could remember it more clearly

lol...did u take him back to your trailer park off of 8 Mile??
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OOooh damn, and the rest of that post is just as hilarious. But really....love this initial reaction. Too funny!!
I just listened to this gorgeous ass song earlier today. It never fails to floor & romance the fuck outta me with it's out of this universe beauty.
UpHereInMyTree500...you witnessed the PERTH version?!?!? HOLY FUCK!!!!!!!!! That's actually the one I listened to today & the one I listen to quite often. Every version of this one is heaven but this one really is doing extra things. Wow! I can't even imagine being there!!!!! I am so, SO grateful that the boys decided to put it on the MSG DVD. How perfect.
Awwww & littlefootsteps, your post gave me chills as well. The fabulous FINN BROTHERS!!! Hell yes! Sounds like such an amazing experience. I'd looooove to hear that version. I don't think anyone is immune to the emotions this song stirs up.
I was reminiscing about the mighty MT VIEW '03 show earlier today...getting this for the pre-set.... being STUCK, soaking in all it's gorgeousness, euphoria~cloud 9 and then some.... completely HIGH. My friend and I were honestly floating around during & after and just kept looking at each other in shock saying " just think..the actual SHOW hasn't even started yet!!!!!" haha. Seriously...what a feeling. Damn!!!
SO MUCH LOVE for this song!!!!! It digs way deep.... demands your heart and soul. One of the best without a doubt.

ive always loved this song and heard ed do it a couple of times on bootlegs.but the night he brought mark seymore out and sang it with him (im sure youve seen dvd) in my hometown perth,it blew my fuckin mind! so unexpected yet so unforgettable.
Hey guys, was checking out your banter on here yesterday, and must admit, to begin with, I wasn't sure if anyone here had realised that this awesome ballad was a cover! Today I read through a few more pages, and was glad to see that some had mentioned that this was not a PJ original.
You'll see the Perth show in Melbourne Ed sings the track with Mark Seymour, and Ed tells the tale of meeting Mark on that particular day, and inviting him along to the gig that night!
If you've never heard any 'Hunters and Collectors', as an Australian, I fully recommend your get your ears around some of their tunes! You won't regret it.
In short, I do prefer Ed's version to Mark Seymour's, but when you see the two of them on stage together, that's when the magic happens............!
I am envious that you guys got it at Mountain View, but I still love ya guys I hope Ed does a pre-set at the shows I go to.:) And have you heard Neil Finn's version of this song? PURE BEAUTY!

"For the world, not for the war"-Neil Finn
Mark Seymour of Hunters and Collectors wrote this song and thought it was ick. So he gave it to his brother Nick, who was playing in Crowded House (fronted by Neil Finn, surfer and good bud of Ed's) They thought it was ok and used it to warm up with until Jenny Morris heard them play and told them it was hit. Mark got wind of that comment, took the song back and it was a huge Hunters hit!! Just goes to show that even musos don't know it all
2003 Bris 8 &9, Syd 11 &13, Melb 18, 19 &20
2006 Vegas, San Diego, LA 9 & 10, San Francisco 15 &16, The Gorge 22 & 23, Syd 7 &8, Melb 13, 14 &16 Melb 20 2009, Buffalo Oct 12; Brooklyn Oct 18 & 19; Hartford Oct 25 2013
Perth was a special performace because of Mark's guest spot, but really, strictly speaking, Ed's delivery on that night wasn't perfect and kinda fluffed the end.
I've grown up listening to this song, and I imagine I would've heard at least 50 different people play it.
it is a cool song, so simple but it carries a lot of emotion with it. me and my mate rich are doing an acoustic duo (he sings, i strum) and this was one of the first songs we learnt. he loves singing the end, he gets to really let go.
"there's a light, when my baby's in my arms..............."
