Damn I love this song more than ever! Whew. It really reaches deep within you and tightly grabs ahold of something so personal. That's exactly what I feel from Ed too. Like he's reaching deep within himself and just pouring all of this straight into us. Man do I feel it. It's soooo deep. As I said before, a sad song that transforms into hope and acceptance. It's so true. I love how the music picks up outta nowhere at the end. It really ties the entire message together. Such a gorgeous song. It hurts in a good way.

Thanks again Eddie! You shine brighter than ever on this one.

"No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead."

that is the best line in the whole entire song, that you can survive and move on with your life. Even though it is a sad song, there is hope, and it is found in this line.:)

Wanted to say how perfectly beautiful this song is...but you guys have pretty much said it all. I'm still trying to find the key...I guess this song is like a reminder. About caring and loving what truly matters.

yes this is one of the most beautiful songs Eddie has ever written. What really bugged me was at shows people would get up and go get their beers or go to the bathroom during this song.

Eddie is singing this song to everyone to let them know how he feels and how much pain he was or going through at the time when he wrote this song. he envokes SO much emotion during this song that it is really touching to hear that. Your heart aches each time this song would come on live and you would stop everything you were doing and listen to the lyrics to this gorgeous song.

thank u eddie for writing such a beautiful song about heartache and moving on w/your life, b/c I know everyone here is going through something like that.

I am BUMPING this thread, it has been almost 2 years since this thread was last bumped, and was created during the 2003.

This was the song that a lot of people would get up and go to the bathrooms or buy food  If people sat down and listen to the lyrics, they would hear a man in pain. So much emotion into this song, and i will NEVER get sick and tired of hearing it. It puts a lot of things into perspective.

'whenever there is a winter, there's a spring time ahead' <--lyric is inspiring and trying to stay positive during the worst time in a person's live.

    any thoughts on this song?

Ive never actually read all the lyrics to that song before, they're absolutely awesome.
  • I just can't help to finally reply to this thread ...
This song is the most heart felt song I have ever heard ...
I traveled from South Carolina to Newfoundland for my first show last Sept., and this is the one song I wanted to hear live. I could not believe it when Eddie started playing it - I just stood there and cryed. The emotions that come from this man when he sings this song are so raw and true - it is like you can look into his soul and feel the pain and hope that were present when he wrote the lyrics.
    Absolutely beautiful!!!

I'm glad there's an appreciation thread for this beautiful song. It's so emotional and deep but simple at the same time. I think this is the most emotional song that Eddie has ever written. I love it since the first time I heard it. It's difficult to explain the things that I feel when I hear it, many times it has made me cry. I really don't get why some people think it's a bad song. To me is just wonderful.

I was driving with my friend, and this song came on....reminded me of a time when I thought I was done and over with an issue in my life....but listening to the words made me realize that I wasn't ovet it yet... a very beautiful song. It goes hand in hand with Black, for me at least.

What's the best song you've ever written?

Matt Cameron thought that "Thumbing My Way" was the nicest chord progression I had ever devised.

Thumbing my way is up there on the shelf, together with "all or none" and "light years" and "black"... they remind me of me and all of the troubles i've had

I can't figure it out. This song should be depressing, but it has always been sort of uplifting to me. I listen to it a lot when life dumps a big bag of S*** on my head. It is a source of strength for me.

...I turned my back, now there's no turning back...
...so i'll just lie alone and wait for the dream, where i'm not ugly and you're looking at me...
  • My extreme PJ fandom was at risk for a while during Binaural. When I first bought RA and heard 'Thumbing my Way', I was obsessed with PJ all over again. Consequently, it led me to give Binaural a few more chances, and I'm in love with Binaural and Riot Act now.

All thanks to 'Thumbing my Way'.

I can see exactly where Mr. Cameron's coming from. You know, for some people it cannot be their fave PJ song because it's got no RAWK in it - no loud guitars, drums - but as a drummer, I can understand one of Cameron's favourite songs being a slow, reflective number.

I know what you mean, the same thing happens to me, when I'm having a bad day I always think in this song. There's a very positive message in the lyrics:

No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead.

All the rusted signs we ignore throughout our lives.
    Choosing the shiny ones instead.
I turned my back. Now there's not turning back.

This song can be both an uplifting song and a depressing song. To me, it is a song about letting go and moving on w/your life. i recall using the lyric:' No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead' to me, that line, to me, is no matter how rough life is at a moment, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. :)

I always LOVE it when Eddie sings this song live, b/c he is opening up to us, letting us know his pain through this song. I don't like it when people just walk out during this song. I think people should listen to these lyrics and take it into consideration that this man is opening up to us.

Have you guys heard the Cleveland version from this year? It's amazing, very emotional, I love how Ed sang this part:

I'm just walking the miles. Every once in a while I get a ride.
I'm thumbing my way back to heaven.
  • Love it. One of my favs by far.
