I agree w/all of ya. It is such a beautiful song, and I think it is his best yet, such emotions coming out of that song.
It could be translated into a number of things, like dealing w/death, and why the people you love the most, could be taken away from you like THAT, or also could be a love that has gone away, and will never return, and you must go on w/your life.

Yeah totally Nadia. Overall I just see it as "things will get better, wether you can see it now or not...they will get better." It's a very sad song, but when it comes down to it it's a very positive song in the since of convaying a message of acceptance and strength. Seeing the best in a the worst situation possible. Hurting so much, but realizing (even though it may feel this way) that's it's not gonna last forever. Very strong words. Very strong message. Very strong song...period.

I agree Lyd, being positive in the worst possible of things, very beautiful! Eddie can do no wrong w/any of his song, and this is the most powerful and positive song he has written in a while. WOW!! Totally blows my mind, and just lets his guard down for once to sing about this beautiful wonderful song.
good analogy lyd:)

i hear her scream from the tv screen
they're talking again about the unthinkable sin
every week on the tv someone's story of death is told
but it's not about me and it's not as good as gold
so i reach inside and remember the time when i could see
the sprouting of love and the gleaming light of the beads
dangling and shining reminding me of seventies
forgetting the sound where my soul is disease
a temple rains in on my parade my love grows tall
i know where i came from i know where i belong
within a flash a smile caresses my pain
giving me the strength to share love with my friends
I love this song. soon as I heard Riot Act this was one of my favs.
how sweet would it be to have PJ play this @ benaroya and/or Bridge school??
*No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead.
I smile but who am I kidding.

OK, I am almost certain it will be. I think Ed loves playin this one live or something. I honestly KNOW it will make it an apperance at 1 of those 3 shows. I can feel it.
It's weird that this one is played soo much live cuze it just seems so personal, ya know? Ed pours out so much of himself in this song, you can just feel the pain. I remember the band sayin that BLACK was waay too difficult to play sometimes because of all the emotion and hurt behind it. That's how I see this one too. Whatever the case though, edespite the fact that it makes me teary eyed everytime I hear it and even though I can hear and feel the pain behind these words and that voice of Ed's...it's all about the passion and overall the message comes down to hope. Which is a beautiful, positive thing.
Anyways...I'm rambling on, all I was tryin to say is that the boys seem to play this song a LOT...I am confident we will hear it at atleast one of the shows this month.
*sigh*
Such a beauty!

I think it was played so much this tour simply b/c it's was a new song and I guess they wanted to play it in different cities so people can hear it.....
but I think on future tours it will become more rare. and I agree it's a sweet song. I would be surprised if this isn't played @ Bridge or benaroya...
I've been aching for this song all damn day and just put it on.
*sigh*
Just as beautiful as ever!!!!
I am sorry for those that can't feel it, cuze although it's one of those songs that hurt, it also feels really good. What Ed puts into this one is just incredible. I don't see how anyone could not feel that.
Everytime I listen to this beauty I am sadly reminded of all the disrespect it got this past tour, which makes it stronger though trust me. I just wanna give it even more love. I heard so many say "it ruins the mood live"....yeah, if you let it. If you embrace this song and take in everything that Ed is pouring out you will find that it's a very intense, incredible thing. Plus, I love the whole vibe of it live. Kinda like, "ok, I've rocked ya all night...now you can sit down and relax a bit, catch your breath...and I hope you don't mind that while I chill you out I also give you 110% of my soul. I want you to REALLY feel this emotion of mine." I see it as very personal and very moving.
I thank the boys from this one, studio...live...whatever. The song is heavenly. Another sad one with hidden hope. I love it!

Oh and just as we thought PhillyPJ, it showed up at Benaroya! Ahhhh, acoustic and in that place?!?! It was beyond gorgeous!!! And it made it even cooler to see everyone soooooo into it. I could feel that everyone around me was feelin it. Made it that much more, ya know? I didn't see one person get up.
Yeah, this song being at that show was way appropiate. That show was perfect, and Thumbing My Way contributed to the perfection for sure.

I am sitting here listening to a birthday mix I made of all of Ed's best, you know this song is on there without a fuckin doubt. This has got to be on of the deepest, most personal, painfully beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life. Like other Vedder classics such as Long Road, Man Of The Hour and All Or None...it's a sad song that also has sooo much hope behind it. I really love and appreciate how Eddie takes this approach to music a lot of the time. It is something we can all feel and all relate to. As bad as things seem, as hopeless and helpless as you may feel...things can and will turn around. It's really touching and comforting to feel this , in every way, in so many of his gorgeous songs.

I let go of a rope. Thinking that's what held me back....

WOW! After all these years you are still doing it. Such powerful lines. Again, WOW!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Like fine wine you get better with age my friend. You are a gift Eddie! And I thank you so much for providing us all with so many.

hmmm.... thumbing has grown on me now.... took a long time... but i finally get it!!!! this really is beautiful... i now wish i took the time to appreciate it more on tour... oh well, there's always next year
did this happen to anyone else? i really didn't like it at first... but it has grown on me (i know this happens with a lot of songs, just wondering if this has happened with anyone with thumbing my way...)
Well it was love at first listen for me... but I just wanted to say that I am SO happy that it finally hit you SoLATisA!!! It doesn't even matter how instant it happens or how long it takes, all that matters is that you are there now. This song is gorgeous! And it sure seems like the boys love to play it. No worries my friend, next time they tour you'll get to experience it live and give it the appreciation it deserves.
This is great news! Glad you feel it. It's such a beautiful thing. Ed gives us his soul with this one. How anyone cannot feel that is beyond me.

I wish I could let me feelings out like that.
the whole world will be relieved
Choosing the shiny ones instead."
just call me a rusted sign
from memory,
so I'll know who murdered me.
It's a vain pursuit
but it helps me to sleep
That line really gets to me.

"I turned my back and now there's no turning back"
How many of us have done that in our lives?
By the way, not all of the people who are drunk at the show are there to hear Evenflow and Alive. Ed gets drunk as the show goes on does he not?
Why it seems so underrated, I will never understand.
