Wow! This thread really did need to be BUMPED. I can't stop listening to this song. Everytime I hear it I am forced to repeat it. This feeling is unbelievable . I still can't get over how fuckin genius it is. Everything about it stays true to the title! You honestly are taken away! You cannot be kept wherever it is that you are when this song is unleashed. It takes you with it. The way Ed draws out the chorus?! Weeeee......just flying away! :o I LOVE IT!!! *chills all over* "I wanna leave this mind and shout." YES!! YOU CAN'T KEEP yourself still either. It's brilliant!!! Ahh this song is straight up ecstasy!! It's one of the super happy, I feel SO alive & SO high PJ songs for sure. :D

I really like the Benaroya performance quite a bit because I like it better with the ukulele. It seems to set the mood better or something. :)

oh yeah, that song would be PERFECT @ the Gorge. I listened to the dallas 2003 yesterday, and it just reminded me how much i LOVE this song!! ONe of my favorites off of Riot Act. :D

I don't know why, but everytime I hear this song, I want to sway back and forth and get lost in the music and words. Eddie is such a great songwriter. 'you can't keep me here' that lyrics always tells me, 'let me go, i am my own person. ' it just grabs you ya know?!

  • Thank heaven's for this thread. I agree with Vedhead, Can't Keep is an amazing song. I really pulled out all my Pearl Jam cd's this summer.
It started out incredible with May 9,2006 Pearl Jam in Toronto. Then it went
to shit. I lost my brother this summer. He took his life. So Can't Keep
is a song that reminds me of him and the circumstances surrounding his death
    and departure from this earth.
Then there's fucking Save You!! Hello!! Eddie is truly an original songwriter.A man who uses words to convey feeling and emotions brilliantly.

I am Mine and All or None are my anthems lately. Just listening to the new album on vinyl, and waiting eagerly for Riot Act to arrive on vinyl.

  • Totally agree with VEDHEAD! "I lived my life like an ocean in disguise" is one of the most amazing lines Vedder ever wrote.
I had this song in my mind for most of last week; it was my "comfort zone" tune. Made perfect sense, suddenly. Love the Benaroya version!

Obsidian22! crislx! My fellow Can't Keepers! Yes! I'm so glad you guys "understand". :) And *BIG HUGS* to you Obsidian22. How beautiful that you find comfort in this sanctuary of a song. I love all the different feelings it inspires. So exhilarating and empowering. As I've said here a million times, it's therapy. A deep soul cleanser. :)

Anyways I've been stuck on this one all day. I like that crislx...a "comfort zone" tune". And yes, that line is the best!!!

    *ahem*

his voice is haunting on that one. great thread for a great song. genuinely inspirational song - seems like he's talking about the banal ordinary daily life we all live (explained much better earlier in the thread!) but the lyrics are more mystical than that..taking the initiative in your life and making it what you wish it could be...

"i want a last breath i wont let out", "forgive every being"
    "i wont live forever"
    "i wont wait for answers"

I really dont see how this song is happy. and about : live life to the fullest. For me it is about: no fear of death. It offers a nice perspective on death. Someone has absolutely no problem with death. He is not suicidal, he justs thinks it will be great, the other force cannot keep him here. He will see the other side. He wont live forever. You (?life itself. the mind. the being. exisatance....?) cant keep him here . ....

    I want a last breath
    I don't let out.

here it is very clear: it is not him who is dying, unfortunately, because everybody has to. No, he turns the whole thing around! He wants this last breath. He is the one in power, because he does not let the least breath out. So ok, it borders suicide i guess.

But i like to think of it as defiant attitude towards life (and death). Its like: I am happy when this is over. I wanna leave this mind. I Wanna see the other side. ( come on guys, he is not talking about traveling! )
Good thing that noone and nothing can keep me here. (in this live, in this existance)

    I wanna race
    With the sundown

sundown= end of day = end of life. he wants, what nobody wants: he wants to race it. He cant wait to get there. to see how it will be on the other side. to see what its like to there. to live forever. ( the characters has a strong faith. actually, every christian and jew and all believers should have this perspective on live, cuz there is so much to look forward to in the afterlife (on the other side)

Who is the "you" in this song? God, makes o sense, cuz God never wants to keep anyone here, i guess. any ideas?

    I wanna shake
    I wanna wind out
    I wanna leave
    This mind and shout

    I've lived
    All this life
    Like an ocean
    In disguise
    I don't live for
    Ever
    You can't keep
    Me here

    I wanna race
    With the sundown
    I want a last breath
    I don't let out

    Forgive
    Every being
    The bad feelings
    It's just me
    I won't wait
    For answers
    You can't keep
    Me here

    I wanna rise
    And say goodnight
    Wanna take
A look on the other side

    I've lived
    All those lives
    It's been wonder
    Full at night
    I will live for
    Ever
    You can't keep
    Me here

To me, in general, the song is happy because it's about how death can't constrain you ...

If goes from sad ... I won't live forever (physically) ... you can't keep me here to damn near defiant

I WILL live forever (spiritually), so you can't keep me here.

To me, it's completely about life after death ... either in the spiritual/Christian sense ... or in the "I will leave my imprint on this earth" sense.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

It is completely worth getting the Burn To Shine DVD just for Eddie's Can't Keep. This song is great with the full band, but it's the solo version that shines!
  • VEDHEAD27VEDHEAD27 Posts: 3,091
You are right on with that slightofjeff! I couldnt agree more. That's exactly my take on it. I like your take too though Big Man. That's an interesting perspective and I can totally see that as well. For me it's always been a happy song though. It turns around, and like Stone said, it's about confronting death and not being afraid...being empowered if anything! I feel strength everytime I listen to it. It always lifts me up. A very spiritually inspiring song. :o At the same time it IS haunting though...which is something else I really love. There's just so many layers to it.

Anyways I am still HOPING AND PRAYING to experience this song live. I've heard the uke version only and I'm soooooooooooooooooooo aching for the FULL ON BAND! Those shuffling drums! AHHGHHH! *goes wild* I had a dream they opened with this for one of the East Coast shows. PLEASE PLEASE let that dream come true and PLEASE PLEASE let me be there!!! :D:D:D

Oooh and YES, that Burn To Shine version is not of this earth!!!!

I've always thought Ed was talking to his maker- God- in that "you can't keep me here" I'm ready and willing to leave this world for the next- funny if that was what he was thinking it was what I was thinking in the time leading up to the cd release." I want to take a look on the other side" now I think I'll wait a bit
